Workshop Goal and Procedure

Goal
• Use ANSYS Mechanical to
calculated the drop test of
a variable thickness bottle

Procedure
• Use External Data
Application to import
variable thickness for the
bottle.
• Link to Explicit dynamics to
set up and solve the
analysis, using mass scaling
to increase efficiency.

Quick Instructions
Start Workbench
Drag and drop an External Data
application into the project schematic
Open the External Data Application
Specify “bottle_thickness.csv” as the
data source (a snippet of the file
content is shown below) (1)
Specify a starting line of 7, Comma
Delimited for the Format Type and
mm for the Length Unit (2) 1
Define the four variables contained in 3
the file (x,y,z,thickness) and specify
mm for the units of Thickness (3)
csv file

Quick Instructions
Return to the project page and drag and drop an
Explicit Dynamics application onto the Setup cell of
the External Data application
In External Data RMB Setup > Update
In Explicit Dynamics Import the Design Modeler
geometry file “BottleDrop.agdb”
Open ANSYS Mechanical
Check Units are set to Metric
Under Geometry, set the surface body thickness to
0.001m (you must do this, even though this
thickness will be overridden by the imported
thickness)
Apply the imported thickness to the bottle body and
then Import Thickness
Create a Virtual Topology and use Automatic
method to Generate Virtual Cells (this will improve
the mesh quality, allowing more efficient mass
scaling)

Quick Instructions
In the Details panel for
Mesh, specify Max/Min
mesh sizes of 0.005 m

Generate the mesh

Apply an initial x-velocity of

10 m/s to the bottle

Apply a fixed support to the

bottom surface of the plate

Change Analysis Settings

Preference to Low Velocity
Set End Time of 3.0E-3 s
