Appendix F: FREE AND PRIOR INFORMED CONSENT

Remittance Utilization, Financial Problems and Coping Mechanisms of Selected


Overseas Filipino Workers’ Supported Families
You are being invited to take part in this research study. Before you decide whether or
not to take part, it is important for you to understand why the research is being done and what it
will involve. Please take time to read the following information carefully.

Statement and Objectives


This study aims to investigate the utilization of remittance, coping mechanisms and
financial challenges of the supported families of OFWs. The study wants to know the socio-
economic profile of the participants in terms of age, gender, their relative working abroad, type
of work of relative/s abroad, monthly remittance of the relative/s abroad, monthly household
income, number of years the relative/s have been working abroad, and highest educational
attainment of the relative/s working abroad. Also, the study aims to know how households do
and participants utilize remittances from relative/s abroad, what financial-related issues do
household of OFWs encounter, how do participants cope with financial issues confronting the
households, if there is a significant difference in the remittance received when grouped according
to type of work, work based, number of years, and educational attainment of the supporting
relative/s abroad and if there a significant difference in the utilization of remittances and the
relative/s working abroad, monthly remittance of the relative/s abroad, monthly household
income, number of years the relative/s have been working abroad, highest educational attainment
of the relative/s working abroad and the weekly allowance.

Reasons why you were invited


The participants in this study are those individual who have relative/s abroad who are
supporting their family, who are the handler and receiver of the remittance sent to them and who
are responsible in budgeting of the finances/money and the remittance inside the home. These
qualifications are found in you and that the researchers chose you to take part. This research will
need 385 participants in all.

Your participation is VOLUNTARY


It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. If you decide to take part, you will be
given this information sheet to keep and be asked to sign a consent form. If you decide to take
part, you are still free to withdraw at any time without giving a reason. The data you’ve given
and the results of this study will not anyway affect your situation or the work and relationship of
your relative/s abroad. If you will participate, the researchers will give you questionnaires for
you to answer. The answering of questionnaires will last for 5-7 minutes. The researchers will
take your time to answer the questionnaire and for you to answer the interview. Also, you will
honestly give information financially like the amount of the remittance sent to you which is very
personal information.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?


You will also be asked of a suggestion regarding your spending patterns and also
solutions in facing financial problems or what must you do in facing a particular money problem.

All your answers will be kept confidential


After you have answered the questionnaire, you will be asked to put it in a sealed
envelope which the researchers will provide. Your answered questionnaire will not be opened
until all answered questionnaires from other participants will be gathered. You may not put your
name on the questionnaire if you want.

What will happen to the results of the research study?


The results will be use in the researchers’ thesis study which is a requirement in Bachelor
of Science in Business Administration major in Business Economics of the University of St. La
Salle. The results will be reported to the University Research Center of USLS. This research
study will be published and will be stored in the University Library, which they can go in to and
have a copy of it.

Who has reviewed the study?


The procedures for the conduct of this research have been reviewed by the research
professor and the research adviser.
