CE620 – Open Channel Flow

Spring 2017 Final Exam

Point Values are Listed Belo, partial credit will be awarded based on final answer and/or approach.
1. Weirs (15 Points)
A suppressed sharp-crested rectangular weir is placed within an 8-foot-wide channel. Find the height of the weir
such that the design head is 3 feet above the crest for 145 cfs.
2. Free Outfalls (15 Points)
Design a single drop structure that will allow a 20-foot-wide rectangular feeder canal to maintain a bed slope of
0.002 ft/ft with a flow of 200 cfs. The existing ground slope is 0.016 and the length of the canal is 215 feet. Note:
Design means provide yc, y1, y2, Δz0, Ld, Lj, and 1/6 y2 as shown in Figure 6-16.
3. HEC-RAS (10 Points)
According to the HEC-RAS Hydraulic Reference Manual, which of the following pier shapes has a Yarnell K
coefficient of 1.05?
A. Square Nose and Tail
B. Twin Cylinder Piers without a Connecting Diaphragm
C. Semi-Circular Nose and Tail
D. Twin Cylinder Piers with a Connecting Diaphragm
4. Scour (10 Points)
Which factor is not required to perform a Pier Scour Analysis using the HEC-18 Pier Scour Equation?
A. Angle of Attack for the Flow
B. Pier Width
C. Embankment Length
D. Flow Depth
5. Unsteady Flow Simple Waves (20 Points)
A stream (assume rectangular section) discharges into a bay while the tide is ebbing (going out) at a rate of 8
inches per hour. It takes 4 hours to reach low tide. The normal flow depth in the stream is 7 feet and the
uniform velocity is 2.6 ft/s. (a) How long does it take for the stream to fall by 1.8 feet at a point 2.7 miles
upstream from the bay? (b) How far upstream from the bay will the river level be affected by the ebbing tide
from Part (a)?
6. Compound: Broad-Crested Weir, Yarnell, & Standard Step Method (30 Points)
A river, with an approximately rectangular shape, has a 150-foot-wide bottom and flows at 25,000 cfs. A bridge
spans the channel at Station 15+00 with two 5.5-foot wide, square nose and tail piers. (a) Generate the water
surface profile for the river (n=0.035) shown in the figure below to a point 500 feet upstream of the bridge using
the Standard Step Method (non-direct). The starting water surface is controlled by a low dam acting as a broad-
crested weir where the height of the weir is 6 feet and assume C B is 0.95. (b) Calculate the energy lost through
the bridge. Assume a contraction coefficient of 0.3 at the upstream face of the bridge, an expansion coefficient
of 0.1 at the downstream face of the bridge, and the velocity coefficient throughout the reach is 1.1. (c) Which
bridge method results in a higher upstream water surface Yarnell or Energy?
