ALPINE ALPINE

• Country of Origin: France


– Purebred (French) Alpines: the original type from the French Alps
– American Alpines: Alpines with other genetic influences after their
introduction to the United States.

Medium to large sized breed of domestic goat known for its


very good milking ability

Color and Markings: Alpine goats can range from white or


gray to brown and black. They have no set colours or markings
(although certain markings are discriminated against). They
have horns, a straight profile and erect ears.

maintaining good health and excellent production.

ALPINE LA MANCHA

Country of Origin: Spain

Lamancha goats are perhaps the most distinctive goat breed;


easily recognizable by their very short ear pinnae.
They are also known for their high milk production, and the
comparatively high butterfat content in their milk.

Color and Markings: Lamancha goats may be any color


known to occur in goats

NUBIAN NUBIAN

Country of Origin: UK
distinguishing characteristics include large, pendulous ears
and a "Roman" nose.

Color and Markings: Large in size and carries more flesh


than other dairy breeds. Markings can be any color, the ears
are long, pendulous and floppy.

The Nubian temperament is sociable, outgoing, and vocal.


Because of its elongated ears and sleek body, the Nubian has
a variety of nicknames, including "Lop-eared Goat", "Rabbit
Goat", "Long-eared Goat" and "Greyhound Goat".[3

Country of Origin: Switzerland


The Oberhasli (also known as the Oberhasli Brienzer) is a
dairy breed developed in the mountainous cantons of Bern,
Freiburg, Glarus, and Graubunden in Switzerland.

Color and Markings: The coloring of the breed is called


"chamoisée" or "chamoisee" for its perceived resemblance to
the colors of the wild Alpinechamois.

The coat is bay or mid-brown, with black markings consisting


of two black facial stripes through the eyes to the muzzle, a
black forehead, a black dorsal stripe or mule stripe, and black
belly and lower limbs. Does, but not bucks, may also be solid
black

SAANEN SAANEN

Country of Origin: Switzerland


Saanens are the largest and one of the calmest of the dairy
breeds. Consider as the “Queen of Dairy Goats”
Color and Markings: White in color

They are large, white goats with upright ears and originally
grown in Switzerland. Saanen goats are heavy producers but
their milk is low in butterfat as compared to other dairy goats.

Toggenburg They are the oldest breed of dairy goats having
medium-sized body.

Color and Markings: They come in various colors ranging from


fawn to dark chocolate brown with white marks on the body.

They are commonly raised for producing milk which is usually used
to make cheese. However, their milk contains only 3.3% of butterfat.

NIGERIAN DWARF NIGERIAN DWARF

Color and Markings:


Nigerian Dwarf goat is a miniature dairy goat breed. Nigerian Dwarf
goats are popular as hobby goats due to their easy maintenance and
small stature.
Nigerian Dwarfs give a surprising quantity of milk for their size. They
are thus ideal milk goats for most families.
Their milk has a higher butterfat content than milk from full-sized
dairy goats, making Nigerian Dwarf goat milk excellent for cheese
and soap making
Nigerian Dwarfs are gentle and easily trainable goats.

LANDRACE LANDRACE

Country of Origin: Finland

Finnish Landrace, The Finnish Landrace, also called the Finngoat


(Finnish: Suomenvuohi), is a landrace breed of goat originating in
western Finland.

Color and Markings: The breed can come in a variety of colors


but is usually grey, pied, or white, and both horned and polled
individuals occur

LEICESTER LONGWOOL

Country of Origin: UK

Leicester (pronounced "lester") Longwool is a sheep


breed with a long and interesting history. they are also
called Leicester, Bakewell Leicester, Dishley Leicester,
Improved Leicester, Leicester Longwool, and New
Leicester. They were originally developed by 18th-
century breeding innovator Robert Bakewell.

Color and Markings: Leicester Longwool Sheep A long,


healthy, lustrous coat which falls in ringlets, ease of
feeding, valuable meat supply and quick maturation are
the sheep's breed traits.

Color and Markings:They have curly threadlike wool which


makes it considerably lighter than others. Some fleeces only
weigh 1 to 3 kg (2.2 to 6.6 lb). These particular kind of sheep
have no wool on the head or neck, although the pattern and
shape of the wool is most like the Wensleydale.

Bluefaced Leicesters are recognisable through their Roman


noses, which have a dark blue skin which can be seen through
the white hair, hence the name

The wool of the Blue Faced Leicester sheep is regarded as


Britain's most luxurious fibre

The Merino is an economically influential breed


of sheep prized for its wool

Merinos are regarded as having some of the finest and softest


wool of any sheep.

Merino need to be shorn at least once a year because their


wool does not stop growing. If the coat is allowed to grow, it
can cause heat stress, mobility issues, and blindness.

The largest and strongest of the fine-wool sheep 18.4 and 20.5
Microns.

Rambouillets bunch up tightly to sleep, which gives them a


higher degree of protection from predators than breeds that
spread out when resting.

Suffolk sheep are a black-faced, open-faced breed


of domestic sheep raised primarily for meat.

They are a large breed of sheep. They have black faces


and legs, a large frame, and are highly muscular

ROMNEY ROMNEY

Country of Origin: England

The Romney, formerly called the Romney Marsh sheep but


generally referred to by the local farmers as the Kent

Color and Markings: A Romney can be either colored or white.

The Romney is in general an open-faced breed with long wool that


grows over the legs in full. Romney breed standards are not identical
across all countries, but have much in common

Color and Markings: White, both sexes are polled

Mainly used for meat production. The resultant mutton had


a desirable proportion of fat and lean, and was juicy and
fine flavoured; the lambs were largeand were usually
dropped early and fed for market.

DORSET DORSET

Country of Origin: England

Known mostly for its prolific lambing. It has been known to


produce two lambing seasons per year: bred in May for lambs
finished by the holidays, and bred again immediately after the
first lambing to produce again in March or April.

Color and Markings: Fleece is very white, strong, close and


free from dark fiber

Both horned and polled Dorsets are all white sheep and medium
size having good body length and muscle conformation to
produce a desirable carcass.

DANNISH LANDRACE DANISH LANDRACE

Country of Origin: Denmark

The Danish Landrace sheep is a rather small and light


breed. They are a very hardy breed and is thought to have
survived only because they do well in the harsh climate and
nutrient poor lands of the dune heaths of western Jutland.

No other sheep breed can compete with them in this


particular habitat, but they require large areas to roam and
are a quite wild breed by nature.

Color and Markings: The face and tail of the sheep are
spotted brown, but they are predominantly white. [4]

gives rich milk, has a strong flock instinct, and manages well
outdoors most of the year.

KARAKUL
KARAKUL

Country of Origin: Persia (Asia)

The Karakul sheep breed is a fat tailed sheep that is possibly the
oldest of the domesticated sheep, dating back to 1400 B.C. in
Persia

Fat tailed sheep are about 25 percent of the world sheep


population and have a distinctive taste.

Karakul sheep are found in very arid regions of Africa, the Middle
East, and Asia. Extremely hardy, they are raised for meat, milk,
pelts, and wool.
