CHAPTER I

PRELIMINARY

A. BACKGROUND
Diesel engines are the most important part of a ship as a driving force or as a propulsion ship. To
support the smooth operation of a diesel engine requires a good fuel system, outside of the other
supporting components.
Auxiliary aircraft that play a role to get good fuel in the operation of Mother Machine is F.O. Purifier,
this plane serves to separate fuel from dirt and water. F.O. Purifier is very influential on the smooth
operation of the ship so that F.O Purifier treatment is needed to produce clean fuel from the dirt and
water.
Before using fuel, fuel must first undergo various processes such as settling on settling tanks and
heating by a heater intended for the Master Machine to allow fuel into the injector to be clean and
avoid blockage in the injector holes. In order for the Master Machine to operate normally, the
Engineers and the ship's crew shall conduct operations and checks on F.O. Purifier to see the quality
of fuel cleared by F.O. Purifier.
Some problems that often occur among the authors often find the exhaust gas from the dark black
parent machine caused by the lack of perfect ignition of fuel by the injector resulting from clogged
holes in the nozzle by dirt, then the author tries to do the drain of HFO service tank on the boat
found a lot of water coming out of the valve drain.
The author also often find the quality of fuel received from bunker barge is not good, this is evident
when the alarm occurred many times on F.O. Feed Pump Strainer. When the examination was found
that the conditions of the holes in the strainer were clogged by the amount of dirt carried by the fuel
to be transferred to F.O. Purifier.
Each vessel has a maintenance and operating management of a different F.O Purifier system
although it basically has something in common. But basically all the maintenance activities done to
provide protection on the machine so as not easily damaged. In addition, good maintenance can also
provide long-lasting power on the parent machine while operating, for both long-distance and short
range shipping.
From the description that has been stated above, the authors feel interested to conduct research
with the title, namely:
"F.O. PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION PURIFIER TO SUPPORT OPERATION OF MACHINERY
MACHINERY IN SHIP MV.TANTO TOGETHER "

B. IDENTIFICATION OF PROBLEMS
Treatment of F.O. Purifier requires the ability and accuracy in analyzing, the factors that can be the
cause of damage F.O. The Purifier and how to treat F.O. Purifier correctly in accordance with the
planned maintenance schedule written in the F.O. manual. Purifier (instruction manual book) so that
F.O. Purifier can work well as expected. Based on the above description, then the problem in making
thesis is:
1. Inadequate fuel purification results from F.O. Purifier
2. Strainer on F.O Feed Pump Purifier dirty.
3. Improper selection of gravity discs.
4. Lack of maintenance on the electro motor part F.O. Purifier.
5. Lack of accuracy during the implementation of Planned Maintenance System (PMS)
C. LIMITATION OF PROBLEMS
Given the many problems concerning the operation of F.O. Purifiers, as identified from the
background, are associated with the limitations of the author, both in terms of time and of very
limited knowledge. So the authors limit the issues to be discussed in this thesis is as follows:
1. Inadequate fuel purification results from F.O. Purifier
2. Strainer on F.O Feed Pump Purifier dirty.
With the limitation of the problem is used so that the discussion becomes more easily understood
and understood.
D. PROBLEM PROBLEMS
As per the author's experience during the practice of the sea (Prala) on board the MV. Pan Energen
and the background of the problems that have been described in the previous discussion, the
authors determine that the formulation of this problem is focused on the subject matter, namely:
1. What causes fuel purification results from F.O. Purifier less perfect?
2. Why is the Strainer on F.O Feed Pump Purifier dirty?

E. PURPOSE AND BENEFITS OF THE PREPARATION OF THRIPSY


1. The purpose of thesis preparation
a. Analyze how far the treatment is done on F.O. Purifier that raises various problems in F.O. Purifier.
b. In order for jobs and duties that exist on the ship in carrying out maintenance and repair activities
Purifier can obtain good results and maximum.
2. Benefits of thesis preparation

THEORETICAL BASIS

A. LITERATURE REVIEW
1. Understanding Optimization
According to Big Indonesian Dictionary, the optimal is (ter) good; highest; most profitable. While
optimization according to Big Indonesian Dictionary means to make the best or make the highest.
(Big Indonesian Dictionary, Language Center, Fourth Edition, Ministry of National Education).
According to Indonesian Dictionary, W.J.S. poerdwadarminta (1997: 753) dikemukakna that:
"Optimalization is the result achieved in accordance with the wishes, so optimization is the
achievement of expected results in an effective and efficient". Optimalization is also interpreted as a
measure where all needs can be met from the activities undertaken.
According Winardi (1999: 363) Optimaslisai is a measure that causes the achievement of goals
whereas if viewed from the point of business, Optimization is the effort to maximize activities so as
to realize the desired or desired profit.
From several notions of optimization according to various sources, the authors conclude that the
optimization is an attempt to improve something effectively and efficiently to obtain the desired
profit so that the realization of a goal.

2. Understanding Treatment
According to Kamus Besar Bahasa Indonesia, treatment comes from the word care which means
maintaining, care or guard. Therefore the treatment means the process, the way, the act of caring /
maintenance / organizing / defense. (Big Indonesian Dictionary, Language Center, Fourth Edition,
Ministry of National Education).
However, the treatment referred to by the authors in this study is not a treatment performed on a
person but rather the care done on a device or machine, which aims to ensure the continuity of the
role of a machine, so that when needed can be used in accordance with the expected conditions. As
the authors discussed in this research is the treatment of purifier.
a. NSOS Care and Repair Management.
Based on the treatment strategy, (NSOS, 1983: 15) explains that the treatment is divided into several
kinds including:
1) Incidental care of planned care
The primary choice for determining a treatment strategy is between "insured care" and "planning
care". Insurance care means we let the machine work until it breaks. In general this mode of
operation is very expensive. Therefore some form of planning system is applied by using a planned
care system, in order to minimize the damage and workload of a necessary maintenance work.

2) Preventive maintenance of repair maintenance


With preventive care we try to prevent damage or increase damage, or to find damage. This means
that we must use certain methods to track progress. The difference between the prevention and
incidental care forms described above is that we have made a conscious choice by allowing for the
deterioration or detection of damage based on frequent cost evaluations as well as the problems
found.

In the treatment strategy there are two kinds of treatments, namely planning and incidental care.
In this case the need for the application of planning system or PMS (Planned Maintenance System)
with the lack of spare parts procurement (spare part).
PMS (Planned Maintennance system) consists of several elements that are related to each other, so
that machining can be monitored and damage can be minimized. The elements in question are the
work plan, control, data information and implementation instructions. While the planning system
aims to do the preparation of ship work plans. This system will make the treatment continuous, so if
there is a change of machinist responsible for a machining, the replacement engineer may undertake
maintenance programs already undertaken by the previous machinist.

b. Treatment is reviewed in terms of management


The development of a shipping company is highly dependent on the smooth operation and
operation of its vessels. One of the objectives of a shipping company is to make a profit of

15-18). 3. Definition of Purifier According to D A Taylor in his book entitled Introduction to Marine
Engineering, a purifier is a centrifugal separator used to separate two liquids, eg oil and water, or
liquid with impurities contained in oil. This separation is done by a continuous centrifugal cycle.
(Introduction to Marine Engineering, D. Taylor, 1996, page 153).

Thus, it can be
interpreted that a purifier is a device that serves as a separator between oil and dirt where as a
result of centrifugal force there is a large liquid type of weight will be thrown away from the
interface, while the light weight of the light type will remain in the disc area. On the ship, the purifier
serves to clean the fuel from liquid or solid soil (sludge) so that the damage to the engine due to the
use of unclean fuel can be reduced. Purifier definition based on "Nurdin Harahap MPU", Separator

oil by mud or dirt. This separator is used for fuel installation or lubricant installation on board.
Because of the possibility of fuel or lubricating oil mixed (contamination) with water or mud or dirt.
Once separated from the impurities, the fuel can be used for fuel installation on MFO heavy fuel
