Answer Question No. I and any Four from the rest.
Assume any data, if required reasonably

1 Write short notes Ofi any FOUR from the following:

(a) Electrical charges on clay particles.
(b) Earth pressure at rest.
(c) Mohr-Coulumb failure theory.
(d) Poncglete construction for the determination of passive resistance.
(e) Merits and demerits of Rankine's and Coulomb's eafih pressure theories.
(f) Advantages of steel sheet piles.
(14)
2. (a) Enumerate the forces between clay particles.
(b) Explain the followings:
(i) Factorp controlling the properties of clay materials
(ii) Hydration of clays
(iii) Exchangeable cations

3. (a) Explain DTA test for identification of ctay minerals.
(b) Describe any three clay mineral structures highlighting the role of clay minerals on the
engineering properties of soils.
(4+10)
4 (a) Derive the expression for skempton's pore pressure parameters (A and B).
(b) How these parameters can be determined in the laboratory?
(c) Explain the behavior of normally consolidated clay, over consolidated clay, loose
sand and dense sand for both drained and undrained conditions.

6. (a) Enumerate the conditions under which Rankine's and Coulomb's earth pressure
theories are applicable under active state
(b) A 7.0 m high earth retaining structure was constructed to retain two layers
of backfill.
The properties of the layers are as follows: I
Layer I Layer ll
Thickness = 3.5 m Thickness = 3.5 m
c=0 kPa,0=30o, T=17.6 kN/m3 c=20 kPa,0=20o, ysat=1g.S kN/m3 r

Assume ground water table is located at 3.S m below GL

Draw the active earth pressure diagram and also compute total active thrust on the
structure and find out the point of application

7 Explain with neat sketch the logarithmic spiral method
for evaluating passive earth
pressure on wall with inclined retaining surface.
Back fill is cohesionless soils with
horizontal surface carries a uniform surcharge of intensity q.

depth of an anchored bulkhead with
homogeneous granurar soir above and berow the dredge
rine.
(b) An anchored rretaining wal! of 6.0 m high has been cJnstructed
with water on both
the sides of the wall and granular soil above and below the dredge
line. The
saturated density of the soil is ys4 = 19.0 kN/m3 and
angle of internal friction, { =
