It’s my great pleasure to be the first speaker of team 2. My name is Van, and I’m from class 93.

So let’s just begin.

There is an upcoming big holiday that I bet all of you guys are waiting for. A long holiday in two weeks
without having to go to school . What is it? Already, on Monday last week, when our school celebrating
the end-term ceremony, if my memory serves me right, there were about 4 well-known girls of our
school singing a song about this big holiday. They even got out of the stage and went off down there.
Now can you guess what im talking about? Yes, it is Tet holiday, the shortened form of Tet Nguyen Dan
or in English “Vietnam ;s new year day”.

VNese pp celebrate this event from the first day of the first month of the Lunar New Year till at least the
third. When the clock strikes 12pm, people would watch the firework. Fireworks displays have also
become an traditional part of a Tết celebration in Vietnam. During the New Year's Eve, fireworks
displays at major cities, such as Hà Nội, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, are broadcast through
multiple national and local TV channels, Tet holiday of this year would take place from 16th of
Febraury. And the 2018 is the year of the Dog.

In this holiday, people forget their past, make the new year resolution, go to the pagoda to pray for luck
in the new year , dress up.

Vnese people who live abroad may also come back to Vietnam to reunion with their family. Tet is the
important and unique festival of Vietnam.

In this holiday, people often eat some traditional food that ties with the long history of Vietnam. These
food includes Sticky Sqaure cake, Sticky rice, jam, sausage. Each of these food has a legendary that
relates to the history of Vietnam. People would gather around to make these special cake

Next, im going to tell you about some customs of family in this important day. First is the lucky money.
children would wish their parents, say, have good luck in the new year, succeed in their career, and
wish their grandparents long life of 100 years and then they would receive the lucky money inside a red
evelope. Adults also exchange the new year’s wishes like “money flows in like water” or “everything
happens as wished””prosperity”

Next is about the custom named xông nhà. Many Vietnamese believe that the first visitor of their house
on The new year day determines the fortune of the family in the whole year/ Usually, a person of good
temper, morality and success will be the lucky sign for the host family and be invited first into the house.
On contrary, the one of bad luck would bring the misfortune to the family he/ she vists. Vnese people also
have the custom not to sweep the floor in Tet because their fortune would get out of their house like the
dust.

They also hung up Dong Ho paintings and thu pháp calligraphy pictures.

In the south of Vietnam, people usually decorate their house with apricot blossoms or in Vietnamese, we
call it “hoa mai”- a traditional yellow tree. Its bright yellow color represent the fertility and fruitfulness
that the family hopes for in the coming year. Many others enjoy going to the flower streey on the center
of the city to enjoy the beauty or to get some bright photograph with ao dai to set up the new avatar on
facebook.

In the very last day of Tet, people would play cards together to test their fortune in the new year.
