REQUEST: New High School Courses – Pilots (for information only)

RATIONALE: Administration is presenting the following piloted high school courses to the
School Board for information. In accordance with Policy 6-2.2, Curriculum
Development and Evaluation, should administration determine it would be
beneficial to add these courses to the curriculum as new high school courses,
they will be presented to the School Board for approval.

 Physical/Occupational Therapy I
 Emergency Medical Technician
 Advanced French Literature and Culture
 Arabic IV

BUDGET
IMPACT: Staffing and funding for the pilot courses will be absorbed within the current
staffing and budget.

Physical/Occupational Therapy I – New Course
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Sports Medicine, Intro to Medical Occupations or Nurse Aide

The course is designed to provide an introduction to the professions of physical and occupational
therapy. Students explore the principles and practices of therapists in the health care industry and
participate in clinical observation under the direct supervision of a licensed physical and/or
occupational therapist. Clinical skills in the areas of physical therapy and occupational therapy
enable students to gain understanding of rehabilitative care, which is practiced throughout the
continuum of care and across the life span of individuals. After successful completion of this
course, students may seek higher education for specific degrees/licensure in a variety of fields
such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, sports medicine, athletic training,
chiropractic medicine, biology, or exercise science.

Emergency Medical Technician – New Course


Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Must be 16 years old by first class

The tasks for this course represent the National Emergency Medical Services Educational
Standards. Students explore and apply the fundamentals of emergency medical services,
anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology while demonstrating skills in assessing and
managing patient care, including assessing the scene and understanding shock, resuscitation, and
trauma. Supervised field experience outside of school hours is required. Successful completion
of all course requirements and instructor endorsement may lead to eligibility to take the Virginia
State Psychomotor Exam and the National Registry EMT cognitive exam.

Advanced French Literature and Culture – Level Added


Credits: 1
Grades: 10-12
Prerequisites: Grade of “C” or better French III
Contemporary French students engage in a variety of language activities that further reinforce language
acquisition. Students experience, discuss, and analyze expressive products of culture (e.g., stories, poetry,
music, paintings, dance, and drama), including selections from various literary genres. Reading and
writing for specific purposes continues development of language skills. Note: This course is not
sequential and may be taken at any time following Level III. It also serves as a preparation for Advanced
Placement and/or an enrichment course upon completion of Advanced Placement. Students are strongly
advised to take this course before Advanced Placement. FHS ONLY
Arabic IV – Level Added
Credits: 1
Grades: 10 -12
Prerequisites: Grade “C” or better in Arabic III
Students in Arabic IV experience, discuss, and analyze stories, poetry, music, paintings, dance and drama
in the target language including selections from various literary genres. Reading and writing for specific
purposes enhances the development of language skills.
