Year 6 homework

Five-week homework beginning: November 12th (until the Winter


holidays)
Homework logs will be handed out on a Sunday. Children must complete one piece of English and one
piece of maths homework. The tasks can be completed in the homework log or evidence can be sent to
the teacher via email or brought into class on a Thursday. They can also complete any of the Extended
Learning Opportunities. The spelling words will be tested in the last week of term.

Reading At least 30 minutes every day for Accelerated Reading.

English  Find a poem and annotate it for language features such as alliteration,
rhyme, smilies etc.
 Choose a poem of your choice or write a poem then learn it. You will
perform this to the class.
 Find 20 interesting openers in your reading book and list them.
 Write 10 sentences with openers that are not I, the, he/she, we, a, my…
You could use exciting openers or adverbial phrases instead.
 Watch a video on Youtube about an oil disaster. Write a summary of
between 100-150 words about the video.
 Write 5 examples of direct speech following the rules. Write these
sentences as reported speech.
 Find 5 pairs of homophones (1 example e.g. pair and pear) and write the
two words in context in the one sentence. E.g, Yesterday, I ate a pair of
pears for my lunch but I was still hungry. Do not use the examples from
your spelling list.

Maths  Complete the weekly task(s) set by your teacher based on the topics covered
in lessons.

 Draw your lounge from a bird’s eye view and then do a reflection and a rotation of
it.
 make your own carroll or venn diagram. Label the parts of the diagram. Then
sort 6 quadrilaterals or other polygons in this diagram according to the
properties of the shapes.
 Find 5 different 2D shapes and 5 3D shapes around your house or in school.
Photograph or draw these shapes and label them with their properties such
as straight lines, 3 edges, 6 square faces, 2 pairs of parallel lines etc.
 Find 10 examples of different angles - draw or photograph them and label
them as an acute, obtuse, reflex or right angle.

symmetry.
 Create a poster on 2D shapes and their properties (at least 5 examples).
 Create a poster on 3D shapes and their properties (at least 5 examples).
 Write 10 of your own word problems for area and perimeter. *Challenge
yourself and make them two-step*
Extended learning opportunities
Science  Create a poster or presentation to promote the benefits of using renewable
and IPC energy, instead of using oil.
 Research an oil disaster and create a presentation about the key facts
 Study ladder activities
PSHE  Make a healthy lunchbox poster/ model/ presentation to encourage others
to pack a healthy lunch.
 How can you be hygienic? Think about washing hands, avoiding tooth decay
etc. Make an advert on imovie or a radio advert.
 The importance of exercise poster
 Create a fitness lesson for Year 6 children. Draw a plan of the space you
would use and list the equipment needed.
Art  Create your own version of a Lowry inspired painting in whatever medium
you would like.
