Assignment – ( short bond paper ), pls submit on Wednesday

Activity 2 - Blast from the Past

Objective:

To trace the historical development of the periodic table using the properties that serve as the
basis for the arrangement of element

Materials:

 Pen
 Sheets of bond paper
 Coloring materials

Procedure:

1. Aside from the scientists mentioned during classroom discussion, there are many others who
also contributed to the development of the periodic table of elements. Do a research on these
scientists by identifying the following information:
a. Name of the scientist
b. Place and year when the contribution was made
c. Number of the existing elements at that time
d. Basis for the arrangement of elements
e. Flaws of the arrangement of elements
2. Using the information you gathered creatively construct a timeline of events using the pen,
sheets of bond paper, and coloring materials.

Guide Questions:

1. Why do the properties of elements serve as the bases of their arrangement?

2. Which arrangement is closer to the modern periodic table of elements that you are using today?
Explain your answer.
3. What are the advantages of having periodic table of elements?

Application:

Do a research on the newly named elements. Identify the bases of their position in the periodic
table of elements. Present their physical and chemical properties.

Activity 2:

1. Draw and discuss the PLUM PUDDING MODEL and Rutherford’s alpha particle scattering
experiment.
2. Enumerate Alkali metals, Alkaline Earth metals, Halogens, Noble Gases, Transition metals,
Lanthanides, Actinides and metalloid using periodic table of elements. ( you can draw)
3. How can you compare the physical and chemical properties of Alkali metals, Alkaline Earth
metals, Halogens, Noble Gases, Transition metals, Lanthanides and Actinides
4. How can you say that an element is a metalloid?
