Awareness for HOT WEATHER CONDITION

1. One Week Weather temperature Schedule from http://www.accuweather.com for Al jubail,

KSA (23 July 2017 to 29 July 2017)

The above mentioned readings are measured for Al-jubail city. But we are working inside
Hadeed Plant. So approximately add min.1 or 2 degree Celsius, because of industrial area.

As per Hadeed Heat Stress Monitoring record calculation, these day will be reach category
4 (High risk - Danger). Upto last week Hadeed were stopped our activity for category 4. But now
they given an approval to work in category 4 (Only in under shed). Due to high heat index from
23.07.2017 onwards very carefully we should take care of our employees (workers). Because
already the following three workers were affected by Heat stress in our Hadeed site.
1. Mr. Mahendar (Scaffolder cum electrical helper) – Nose bleeding at site (Given First aid in
our site office on 16.07.2017)
2. Mr. Anjaneyalu (Carpenter cum rigging helper) – Took 5 bottle glucose in hospital on
18.07.2017
3. Mr. Rakesh kumar (Carpenter cum civil helper) – Dizziness and vomiting on 22.07.2017

Above mentioned incidents are not notified to Hadeed, because it will delay our project for
investigation process. I only notifying internally for our awareness. So these three incidents should
be our lesson learning and hereafter no one should affect by heat stress. I requesting all our
Managers, Engineers, & Supervisors to take care of your subordinates at this critical time.

In future, if anyone fell down in site due to heat stress. It will surely create a problem at this situation
(end of project). So follow safety first and go home safely.

For everyone awareness, kindly go through the below given details.

2. The Heat Equation

3. Hazards of working in heat

Working in heat can be unpleasant, lead to illness
and under extreme circumstances be fatal. Working in heat
may be hazardous when people are carrying out activities
where heat is generated (e.g. welding), or when doing work
involving significant physical activity outside or with no air
conditioning during hot weather.
Every year, dozens of workers die and thousands
more become ill while working in extreme heat or humid
conditions. More than 40 percent of heat-related worker
deaths occur in the construction industry, but workers in
every field are susceptible. There are a range of heat
illnesses and they can affect anyone, regardless of age or
physical condition.

4. Symptoms
Early symptoms of illness from working in heat are: feeling sick, weak, clumsy and/or dizzy.
Cramps can also be caused by heat. People with these symptoms who keep working may
collapse (heat exhaustion), and in extreme cases this could be fatal (heat stroke).
5. Risk factors for Heat Illness
 Weather Conditions
 Temperature
 Humidity
 Air movement
 Radiant heat (ex: sunshine)
 Conductive heat (ex: ground)
 Higher intensity and/ or duration of physical activity
 PPE/ clothing can be a factor (i.e., Tyvek overalls)

6. Personal Risk factors

 Poor physical conditions
 Age
 Degree of acclimatization
 Water consumption
 Some medications

7. How the body handles heat

 The body tries to keep a constant internal temperature
 As internal temperature rises from activity, the body cools itself by:
 Increasing blood flow to skin surface
 Releasing sweat onto skin surface

8. Heat exhaustion
 Cause
 Excessive loss of water and salt through sweat
 Signs & Symptoms
 Headache, dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting
 Weakness and moist skin
 Muscle cramp
 Mood change such as irritability or confusion
 Upset stomach or vomiting

9. Heat stroke (Treat as a medical emergency! Can be life

threatening.
Heat Stroke
 Cause
 Total breakdown of body’s cooling system
 Signs & Symptoms
 Sweating stops – skin is hot, red, and dry
 Mental confusion, losing consciousness
 Fainting
 Seizures or convulsions
10. Employer Responsibility to Protect Workers
 Provide workers with water, rest and shade.
 Allow new or returning workers to gradually increase workloads and take more frequent
breaks as they acclimatize, or build a tolerance for working in the heat.
 Plan for emergencies and train workers on prevention.
 Monitor workers for signs of illness.
 Don’t force an employee to work in hot weather condition for long period.
