EXPERIMENT NO. 2: SWITCHES

DATE PERFORMED: DECEMBER 11, 2015

DATE SUBMITTED: JANUARY 8, 2016
SCHEDULE: FRIDAY (10:30-13:30)
GROUP NO. : 4
GUIBELONDO, HEINZ HAYLE M.
SET UP and PROCEDURE

We placed the Module DL 3155E01 in the console and set the main switch
to on and observed the different kind of switches present in the circuit and
identified its type. Measured the resistance of S1 (Push Button - ) by connecting it
to the multimeter. Pushing the button S1 and observed the opening of the CZ
contact in the circuit and moved the dotted terminal of the multimeter to E and
verified that EZ contact is now open. After that, we moved the dotted terminals to
G or K and verified that when switch S3 is in A position, the contact GZ is closed
and the contact KZ is open. When in B position of S3, we also verified that GZ
contact is open and KZ contact is closed. We moved the terminal of the ohmmeter
to Q point and the other terminal to N or P and verified that when S4( Slide) switch
is in A position, the NQ contact is closed while the PQ is open also when S4 is in
B position, NQ is open and PQ is closed is verified. We repeated the procedure in
points S and between R and T contact respectively. After that, we immediately
disconnected the miltimeter, connected the C and D terminals with a jumper and
observed the immediate glow of the red led. We pushed the button S1and observed
the circuit breaking happening with the relative switching on and off of the red led
and repeated the operation by pushing and releasing it.

We connected the E and F terminals by using a jumper and pushed the

button S2 and observed the circuit continuity with the switching on of the green
led. After switching it on, we released the S2 button and observed the circuit
breaking with the relative switching off of the green led. Removed the jumpers
between C and D terminal as well as E and F and transferred it to terminals G with
H and K with L. We observed the red led by switching it on and switching off of
the green led when S3 is in A position and also we observed the switching off of
the red led and switching on of the green led by placing the S3 in B position.
Removing the bridges between GH and KL, we connected terminals M with N and
O with P by a jumper and observed the switching on of the red led and switching
off of the green led by placing the S4 in A position. And by placing the S4 in B
position, we observed the switching off of the red led and the switching on of the
green led and commented on the results. Finally, we removed the jumpers between
MN and OP and checked the terminals R, S and T of S4 that will operate in the
same way as the terminals N, Q and P as we connected them with jumpers from Q
to S, M with R and O with T
DATA and RESULTS

SWITCH TYPE SWITCHES

Toggle S3
Push-Button - NO S2
Push-Button - NC S1
Slide S4

PROCEDURE 5: Measure the resistance value of S1 without pushing the

corresponding push-button;

- The reading from the multimeter gives us a 0 ohm.

PROCEDURE 6: Observe the opening of the CZ contact;

- When S1 is pushed, it gives us the reading of 0.L or no resistance.

PROCEDURE 7: Verify the EZ contact is open;

- No resistance.

PROCEDURE 8: Verify the temporarily closing of the EZ contact until the button
is pushed;

- When S2 was pushed, it gave us a value of 0 ohm.

PROCEDURE 9: Verify that when switch S3 is in A position, the contact GZ is

closed and the contact KZ is open while when S3 is in B position, the GZ contact
is open while KZ is closed;

- When S3 in A position, it gave us a value of 0 ohm and also in B position, o

ohms is what we obtained.

PROCEDURE 10: Verify that when the slide switch S4 is in A position, the NQ is
closed and PQ is open, while S4 is in B position the NQ contact is open and PQ is
closed;

- At position A, a value of 0 ohm is obtained as well as at position B we

obtained a 0 ohm.
PROCEDURE 11: Repeat procedures 10 by moving the terminals of the ohmmeter
between S and between R and T;

- Moving the terminals of the ohmmeter between S and between R and T it

gave us a value of 0 ohm.

PROCEDURE 13: Observe the immediate switching on of the red led and explain
the reason;

- The led lights up so fast because in S1, it is normally close.

PROCEDURE 14: Observe the circuit breaking with the relative switching off of
the red led;

- Pushing the button will turn off the led because S1 is normally closed letting
the current flow. Once the button is pushed, it opens the circuit.

PROCEDURE 16: Comment on the results;

- The switch allows the current flow by opening and closing the connection in
the circuit and S1 is normally closed. Switching the module on will make the
led glow immediately.

PROCEDURE 18: Observe the circuit continuity with the relative switching on of
the green led;

- By pressing S2, it does not let the current flowing because of incomplete
connection.

PROCEDURE 19: Observe the circuit breaking with the relative switching off of
the green led;

- Pressing the S2, the circuit will be closed because the switch is normally
open. When released, it will turn off and will close the circuit.

PROCEDURE 20: Comment on the results;

- When the switch is pushed, the circuit is close. When pushed, it is open.
PROCEDURE 23: Observe the switching on of the red led and the switching off of
the green led when S3 is in A position;

- When S3 in A position, the red led is in open circuit while the green led is
closed.

PROCEDURE 24: Observe the switching off of the red led and the switching on of
the green led;

- When S3 is in B position, the red led is in closed circuit while the green led
is open.

PROCEDURE 28: Observe the switching on of the red led and switching off of the
green led when S4 is in A position;

- When S4 is in A position, the red led is closed while the green led is open.

PROCEDURE 29: Observe the switching off of the red led and the switching on of
the green led when S4 is in B position;

- When S4 is in B position, the red led is open while the green led is closed.

PROCEDURE 30: Repeat the switching of S4 between A and B and comment on

the results;

- At A, Yellow ON, Red OFF

- At B, Yellow OFF, Red ON

PROCEDURE 32: Check that the terminals R, S and T of S4 operate in the same
way as the terminals N, Q and P by connecting with jumpers Q with S (because Q
and S are isolated; measured ohmically) M with R and O with T;

- The resistance is 1.30 ohms

- At B position, green led lights up
- At A position, red led lights up
- Terminal RST of S4 operates in the same way as terminal NQP
- When measuring in ohms, negative terminal in Q while positive terminal in
S.
PROCEDURE 33: Comment the behavior of different switches present in the
SWITCHES block;

- Push-Button - the circuit is temporarily open or closed.

- Toggle & Slide - the circuit is permanently closed or open unless there is of
position.

ANALYSIS:

In this experiment, it observes the different behaviors of the switches with

two LED lights present in the circuit. The first switch has a red led that lights up
fast when turned on because it is naturally closed while the second switch is
naturally open so when being pushed, it lights up its designated led light. When it
comes to resistance, first switch has no resistance at since it gives us a value of 0
ohms and the second switch has a resistance that’s why in the circuit, there is a
conductivity of electricity. The third switch which is the toggle which can open
two lights, that means it is a two-way switch and it is the same as the fourth switch
because they have the same function.

CONCLUSION:

In this experiment, the switches presented in the circuit has different roles.
The first two are intact in the circuit. The first when pressed, it cuts the current
flow of the circuit while the second is opposite of the first. The third and fourth
switch has the same function but they’re unlike when it comes to appearance

RECOMMENDATION:

From the experiment, a suggestion is that engineering students should be

familiar with different kinds and types of switches and must know the functions of
it. Eligible to use and function in the circuit.
