Hawkers: ‘We are
robbed by our own’
Tuesday morning this week in Burgersfort was
different.
Usually the hundreds of hawkers in town are
merrily doing business by 09:00. This week their
informal shops were quiet, with just only a few of
them going on with their usual day’s work. The
others were gathered in the council chamber of the
Greater Tubatse Municipality, or still on their way to
a meeting addressed mainly by Mr Jackson Tjatji,
prominent local politician and businessman.
What transpired at the meeting, through the
morning attended by close to 700 people, was that
hawkers was no more staisfied with their elected
structures.
According to the meeting, and Mr Tjatji, the
incumbents of the structures turned out to be corrupt
and it is alleged that they do no look after the
interests of the hawkers in town.
Mr Tjatji says what is happening is that before a
new hawker can start operating in town, he or she is
required to pay up to R1000 to the so-called structure
before permission is granted to start doing business.

Nkwe goes ahead
with Garatau
planning
Platinum developer Nkwe Platinum,
which plans to also list on the JSE,
expects diversified miner Xstrata to
make an investment decision on the
Garatau project near Burgersfort during
the fourth quarter of this year.
Speaking at the last day of the Africa
Downunder conference in Perth, Nkwe
Managing Director, Mr Maredi
Mphahlele also said that it would be
releasing the results of the Garatau
feasibility study within the next month.
Mphahlele said that Xstrata held the
option to acquire a 50 percent equity in
the 14-million platinum group metals
(PGM) ounce Garatau project by fully
funding the development cost of the
project. The current capital expenditure
on the Garatau development is
estimated at between R6-billion and R8-
billion.
If Xstrata decided to exercise its
option to earn a 50 percent stake in
Garatau, it would also be entitled to fund
up to 50 percent of the larger Tubatse
project. Mphahlele said that if Xstrata
decided against the development of the
Garatau project, Nkwe would look for
alternative strategic partners.
“In case they don’t make a positive
decision, the prospect is very large and
very robust,” he told delegates.
Once an investment decision has been
made, the mine development would take
between 18 and 24 months, with the first
production expected either in the fourth
quarter of 2012, or the first quarter of
2013.The mine would produce around
three-million tons of ore a year, delivering
around 400 000 oz of PGMs.
Mphahlele added that the feasibility
study on the Tubatse project would also
start in 2011.Meanwhile, Nkwe’s listing
on the JSE was planned for the first

Murder at
Leboeng
The Leboeng Police found a dead young woman on Sunday 5 September about
15:30 after they reports from members of the community that they saw a lifeless
body.
The body of the young lady was laying next to the Maakgongwane cemetery
at Kgautswane village. She was found face-down with a stab wound to her back
and on further examination of her body eight more stab wounds was inflicted on
her chest, while her throat was cut.
The victim was identified as 20 year old Ellah Mokwena of Ga-Molai in the
same village.
The victim was last seen alive on Saturday 2010-09-04 at about 23:00 at
Maphanga’s tavern which is situated at Matshiretsane. As far as could be
determined she left the tavern with her boyfriend

cemetery. It is not yet known what was the motive for her murder.
Her boyfriend was arrested the same day for questioning. He was later
charged with her murder. He appeared in the Leboeng magistrate court on
Tuesday 7 September and was remanded to next week Tuesday for a bail
application. He remains in custody until his bail application is heard.
The Police in Leboeng say women should not to go to tavems during the night.
This make them vulnerable to attacks and they can easily be victims of crimes
such as rape and murder.

32 year old woman in connection with neglecting of children on 2 September
2010.
Earlier the day a 56 year old woman reported to Police that her niece left her
3 children without care and went to stay with her boyfriend. The police made
follow-ups and managed to arrest the lady. The accused appeared in the
Praktiseer magistrate’s court on 3 September 2010 and she was not granted the’
bail. The case was postponed to 08 September.
On 5 September 2010 Tubatse Policce a 39 year old man for assault with the
purpose to inflict grievious bodily harm. The arrest followed an incident at
Bothashoek when on 4 September 2010 when accused assaulted his 31 year old
girlfriend.
The accused (edwin msweni) appeared in the Praktiseer Magistrate’s court on
06 September 2010 and he was sentenced to three months imprisonment or a fine
of R300.

Last week Platinum Gazette reported on
the council resolution to put in place a
proper structure such as a Hawkers
Association and issue hawkers licences.
According to the resolution a fee of R120
per year will be charged for a hawkers
licence. R80 of this will go towards the
municipality and R40 towards the
Hawkers Association.
The idea with these measurements is to
regain control as stalls are pitching up
anywhere and everywhere in, especially
Burgersfort.

Smack Down Masters still going strong

On Sunday 5 September the Smack Down Masters FC visited Makgemeng FC for a
friendly game.
The game started slowly and few chances to score were created. In the second half
the Smack Downs came back strong and managed to score three goals. They won the
game 3-0. The goal scorers were KG Phasha who scored two goals and Jury Semono
who scored one goal.
