OBJECTIVES
● To employ a drone to perform remote power line
inspections.

● To create a drone mountable system to be used in


the detection of defective power lines.

● Detection is performed using a camera and


microprocessor mounted on a drone.
INTRODUCTION
● Currently inspections in power lines is done by
either using handheld thermal cameras or thermal
cameras mounted to helicopters.
● Power line maintenance is expensive, dangerous,
and time consuming.
● Our goal is to create a drone-mountable system
for detection of defective power lines.
● Detection is performed using a camera and
microprocessor mounted on a drone.
● Video from the thermal camera is transmitted to a
base station for human viewing.

BASIC PRINCIPLE
● The design of the flying drone consists of the quad
rotor with four propelling wings. Out of the four
motors, the left and right induce pull action, while the
front and back induce push action.

● The brain of the robot is a microcontroller board that


has been designed for auto-piloting drones.

● The microcontroller is combined with an inertial
measurement unit. This unit consists of a 3 axis gyro,
3 axis accelerometer and a barometric pressure gauge.

● An RC transmitter is used to navigate the robot.


Functionalities of the robot can be enhanced further
by fitting a GPS chip for gauging latitude and
longitude and a SONAR system for gauging the
altitude.

PROPELLER
STANDARD PROPELLER

● Also known as tractor propeller.

● Placed at the front of the quadcopter.

● These props pull the quadcopter through

the air like a tractor.

● Made of plastic and the better quality made

of carbon fiber.
PUSHER PROPELLER

● These are placed at the back of the quadcopter.

● These contra-rotating props exactly cancel out motor

torques during stationary level flight.

● Opposite pitch gives downdraft.

● Made of plastic and carbon fiber.


BRUSHLESS MOTOR
● Usually uses brushless DC motor.
● Here uses a brushless electric out-runner type.
● It is more efficient, more reliable, and quieter
than a brushed motor.
● More efficient motors save battery life and give
the owner more flying time.
MAIN DRONE BODY PART
● This is the central hub from
which radiate like spokes on
a wheel.
● It houses battery, main
boards, processors avionics,
cameras, and sensors.
ELECTRONIC SPEED CONTROLLER(ESC)
● ESC is an electronic circuit
● Its purpose to vary an electric motor’s
speed, its direction and also to act as
a dynamic brake.
● It converts DC battery power into
3-phase AC for driving brushless
motors.
● Electronic Speed Controllers are an
essential component of modern
quadcopters which offer high power,
frequency, resolution 3-phase AC
power to the motors
FLIGHT CONTROLLER
● It interprets input from receiver,

battery monitor and other

on-board sensors.

● Regulates motor speeds, via

ESCs, to provide steering, as well

as triggering cameras or other

payloads.
BATTERY

● Here we are using Lithium


polymer (LiPo) batteries.
● It offers the best combination of
energy density, power density,
and lifetime on the market.
GIMBAL
● It is the pivoting mount that
rotates about the x, y, and z
axes.
● Used to provide stabilization
and pointing of cameras or
other sensors.
CAMERA
● The camera is specifically designed
for aerial filming and photography.
● Here using a 360 degree rotating
camera.
● Views from every direction is
possible
PROCESSOR
● Here we using ArduPilot processor.
● ArduPilot is a professional grade
open source, unmanned vehicle
Autopilot Software Suite capable of
controlling autonomous.
● ArduPilot is one of the most
advanced, full-featured and reliable
autopilot software available.
