Post-graduate course on

System level aspects of electric vehicles (5 cr.)

will be held 13.4.2016 in auditorium S4 and 21(–22).4.2016 in auditorium S2
in building of Sähkötalo at Tampere University of Technology.

The main target of the course is to illustrate that electric vehicles (EVs) are not only “batteries and electric
motors on wheels”, but modern EVs are new way of personal transportation including many valuable
possibilities but also challenges related to the energy system and society. The approach of the course is to
combine practical and academic perspectives into a cohesive package.

In the course both industrial and academic perspectives are presented in the lectures. Every student will
write a summary (1–2 pages) of one section of the course book
“S. Rajakaruna, F. Shahnia, A. Ghosh (Ed.), Plug In Electric Vehicles in Smart Grids, Integration
techniques” (http://www.springer.com/us/book/9789812873019), or depending on the number of course
participants, possibly some other literature too. Every student also presents the summarized literature
section to the other students and work as an opponent for a literature summary and presentation of
another student. At the end of the course there will be a written exam based on the course material
including the lectures and written summaries.

Passing the course requires the following three things:

1. Presence in the seminar days.
2. Writing a literature summary, giving a related presentation and working as an opponent
3. Passing the exam.

The course will be graded as a scale of fail/accepted/excellent. The course comprises 2–3 days (depending
on the number of students) in TUT and an exam at your own universities.
The preliminary program of the course is the following (changes are possible).

Day 1, 13.4.2016. Lectures: Industrial perspectives, Tampere 9:30–17:00. Some of the lecture topics and
presenters are the following.
· Introduction to electric vehicles. Why and why not EVs? How about other ways of passenger
transportation in the future? (Nils-Olof “Olle” Nylund, VTT)
· EVs under the skin. How EVs differ from conventional cars? (Markus Hirvonen, Valmet Automotive)
· Basics of battery technology. What kind batteries are used in EVs, why, and how does the future
look in this respect? (Kai Vuorilehto, Skeleton Technologies)
· EV charging. How EVs are charged? What are the most important international charging
standards? (Juha Vesa, SESKO)
· Electric buses. Why buses are a very interesting application of electrification of transportation?
(N.N.)
· “Smart charging” of EVs. Why and how to charge EVs besides only to charge as full as possible
asap? (Henri Makkonen, Siemens)
· Business out of charging service. (Rami Syväri, Fortum Charge&Drive)
· EV related research in TUT. (Antti Rautiainen, TUT)
· Assignment of the literature works. Approve of the exam day. (Antti Rautiainen, TUT)

Day 2 (and possibly day 3), 21(–22).4.2016. Seminar day in Tampere: 9:30–16:00. Students present the
content of the course book and possibly some other literature.

The exam day in May 2016. Written exam in students’ own universities based on the material of the course.
