The Problem and Its Setting
Introduction
According to UNEP (2011: 292), “every year, an estimated 11.2 billion tons of solid waste
are collected worldwide and decay of the organic proportion of solid waste is contributing to about
5 per cent of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions” which in turn accelerates climate change.
Clark and Matharu (2013: 66) insist that “the planet currently generates approximately 1.3Gt of
solid waste per year, which is expected to increase to 2.2Gt by 2025.”This huge amount of waste
is a problem, and the question is how to deal with this waste crisis. Waste management is crucial
to reducing the negative impacts of waste on the environment, and its consequences to human
beings. It is the goal of waste management to treat waste in a safe and proper manner, in order to
minimize harm or damage to the environment. Disposal methods such as landfilling are directly
related to human health issues, as well as the environment. For instance, UNEP (2011: 302) blames
landfills for generating methane as “the largest source of GHG emissions, caused by the anaerobic
degradation of organic material in landfills and unmonitored dumpsites.” Like this, waste
From time immemorial, humans and animals have used the resources of the earth to support
life and dispose of wastes. In those days, the disposal of human and other wastes did not pose any
spectacular problem as the population was limited and the area of land available for the
assimilation of such waste was unlimited. Many countries is having problems with their proper
waste disposal because they are having trouble in implementing their rules in waste management.
Some likes proper disposal of the garbage’s or trashes, they believe that proper management of
waste can have great impact to their home, to their surroundings, and to the community they are
living. Also they want cleanliness to their environment so they properly enjoy managing every
waste they in their homes. Proper management of waste can boost the image of the particular
person, school, and in school or campuses. However, today, utmost importance is being given
across the globe to this burgeoning problem of solid wastes. Rapid population growth and
uncontrolled industrial development are seriously degrading the urban and semi urban
environment in many of the world’s developing countries, placing enormous strain on natural
