05 Gender and Culture

There are three main types of societies in the world today—matriarchal, patriarchal, and
egalitarian societies.
A. Define the THREE main types of societies in the world today and give ONE example of
each type.

Matriarchal – A matriarchal society is a society in which women play the leading role
and are the dominant figure in both the household and the government. An example of
a matriarchal society is Mosul; women are the most dominant figure in their society that
family lineage is traced through females instead of males.

Patriarchal – Unlike in a matriarchal society, men play the leading role and are the
dominant figures of the household and government agencies in a patriarchal society. An
example of a patriarchal society would be Iraq. To this day, not a single female occupies
a senior or very high position in government; also, their culture dictates a woman’s role,
so men are the head of the family.

Egalitarian – an egalitarian society is a society in which neither males nor females are
the dominant figures in society; basically, both men and women are equal in this kind of
society. An example of an egalitarian society would be Sweden. In Sweden, both men
and women play an equal part in the household and also, they both have equal chances
of acquiring senior positions.

B. Identify the most commonly found type of society and explain TWO reasons why the
distribution of this type of society is widespread.
The most commonly found type of society from around the world is patriarchal society.
The reason for this is either because most countries around the world are
traditional/cultural, so their society dictates that men must be the dominant figure in
both the household and the government or because their religion dictates that man
must be the head of the household.
