Standards:
SC.912.E.6.1 Describe and differentiate the layers of Earth and the interactions
among them.
NETS – S Students use visual models to broaden their perspectives and enrich their learning
by collaborating with others and working effectively in teams
NETS – T Provide alternative ways for students to demonstrate competency and reflect on
their learning.
Objectives: In groups, students will investigate the differences between the Earth’s core,
mantle, and crust by assembling a visual model of the layers of the earth to further
understand how the Earth has formed.
Materials:
Tablet/Laptop Kahoot (website) & Classroom Interactive Board,
Information Worksheet Textbook & Worksheet
Playdoh (4 colors) Activity Mat
Wet Wipes Toothpicks
Tape Small Sticky Labels.
Possible Questions:
Have an interactive chalkboard on at the head of the class. Have one student from each
group come up to the board and fill in one answer to help complete the shown diagram.
As a group, have 3 students take turns building the model, then have the remaining 3
identify and label each layer by composition, density, and position. Use textbook or
interactive chalkboard to gather information or reinforce what they already know.
Q2: What is the difference between the inner core and outer core of the earth?
Once student groups have cleaned up, have them return to their seats then get out the
earth’s layer study guide and colored pencils to fill in your model and label it like you did
for your playdoh model.
Q3: How deep are the layers you made? Why? Add that to your label.
Q4: Now that you understand the earth’s basic layers, how do you the think the layers of
the earth will appear in future?
Play the Kahoot created game as made below to reinforce basic key concepts the class
has covered in the lesson.

Technology Modification – As a participant in group work, the ESOL student will add
visuals fitting to the lesson being presented using internet resources.
Technology Modification - Using a computer tablet, the ASD/SLD student will use a
visual scene display (student specific) to recognize and understand basic information on
the earth’s crust. The option of headphones to listen to a lesson or watch visual
information being given is also available.

5. liquid
THE ANSWER
1. the layer of the earth between the crust and the core
→ Mantle
THE ANSWER
True
2. gravity → Besides the magnetic field, what does the inner core create?
THE ANSWER
True
3. the movement of a fluid, caused by differences in temperature, that transfers heat from
one part of the fluid to another → Convection Current
THE ANSWER
True
4. a layer of molten iron and nickel that surrounds the inner core of Earth
→ Inner Core
THE ANSWER
False
THE ANSWER
False
"What properties do you see? What layer is this?" (The substance moves really slow. We think
this is the mantle.)
"What did you think of the outer core?" (I thought it was cool because it was wet. Is it really wet
inside the Earth?)
"What are the differences between the inner core and outer core?" (The inner core is solid and
the outer core is liquid.)
"What type of current will occur in the mantle? Why?" (Convection. The differences in densities
and temperature cause the current to occur.)
"What might we expect to see on the Earth's crust?" (Dirt, rock, sediment, water, minerals,
etc.)
