History
Founded in 1976, Raffles Hospital is a 380­bed tertiary care hospital with a
comprehensive range of specialist surgical, medical and diagnostic services
covering 35 sub­specialities. Located in the heart of Singapore, Raffles Hospital
offers a full complement of specialist services combined with advanced medical
technology. Its 20 specialist centres meet a wide variety of medical needs. Raffles
Hospital is part of a fully integrated healthcare organisation, which includes a
network of family medicine clinics, multi­disciplinary clinics and dental clinics.
Patients enjoy a continuum of care, from having their most basic healthcare needs
met through an island­wide network of Raffles Medical clinics, to specialist and

cancer patients in Singapore and South East Asia.  The range of services provided
includes cancer screening, diagnosis, oncologic treatment encompassing inpatient
and outpatient chemotherapy, targeted therapies, chemoradiation and radiotherapy,
as well as palliative and supportive care.

The service offers palliative care outpatient clinics, consultative and home care
services. An inpatient service offering specialist interventional services and
facilities, specialist nursing support, respite care and terminal care is available in
Raffles Hospital. Oncologic care and evaluation for palliative care patients are
available 7 days a week. Outpatient clinics and home care services are provided 6
days a week while on­call services are available 24 hours a day. A 24­hour
emergency centre located in Raffles Hospital is also available for emergency
management of severe, unrelieved symptoms.

In addition to inpatient wards, inpatient facilities in Raffles Hospital include an
Intensive Care Unit, an angiography suite, a day surgery ward, operating theatres
and a 24­hour emergency centre. Rooms for the 380­bed hospital range from a 6­
bed room to a Presidential Suite with adjoining rooms for family members.

Support services are provided by on­site dieticians and nutritionists,
physiotherapists, occupational therapists, traditional medicine practitioners, clinical
psychologists and psychiatrists.

The Centre also participates actively in translational research and clinical trials.

Palliative and supportive care

Palliative care provided by Raffles
Cancer Centre is multi­disciplinary and
coordinated by oncologists trained in both
Medical Oncology and Palliative
Medicine, thus providing a continuous
service and close integration of palliative
care into the oncology service. The multi­
disciplinary palliative care team
comprises three specialists qualified in
Medical Oncology and Palliative Medicine, Palliative Nurses, a Pain Specialist, two
home care doctors trained in Palliative Medicine, psychiatrists, clinical
psychologists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nutritionists. When a
patient becomes too frail to attend outpatient clinics, the home care team is
activated to continue provision of palliative care to the patient and his family. The
option of inpatient services is also available for respite care, nursing support or
terminal care. The palliative care team continues to provide symptomatic relief,
psychosocial and emotional support for the patient and his family till the end,
including death certification. Bereavement support is also available if required.
