CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE

VERSE 16.1:-

 Akrodha means to check anger. Even if there

is provocation one should be tolerant, for
once one becomes angry his whole body
becomes polluted. Anger is a product of the
mode of passion and lust, so one who is
transcendentally situated should check
himself from anger.
 Acäpalam, determination, means that one
should not be agitated or frustrated in some
attempt. There may be failure in some
attempt, but one should not be sorry for
that; he should make progress with patience
and determination.
 even though material conditions are
miserable, if these qualities are developed
by practice, by all classes of men, then
gradually it is possible to rise to the
highest platform of transcendental
realization.
 Remembering that the fruits of the açvattha
tree of saàsära had not been described in
the last chapter after mentioning them, the
Lord in this chapter describes the fruits of
the tree which are of two varieties: those
which cause liberation and those which cause
bondage.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 puëyaù puëyena karmaëä bhavati päpaù päpena:
he becomes pure by pure karmas, bad by bad
karmas. (Båhad Äraëyaka Upaniñad 4.4.5)
CCP:-

 Demoniac consider the demoniac qualities to

be their strength.
 Divine consider the divine qualities to be
their wealth.
 Then these qualities become ingrained in us
and become the part of our personality.
 This chapter describes the upper and the
lower part of the tree.
 Divine are situated on the upper part of the
tree and the demoniac are situated on the
lower part of the tree.
 Three verses are grouped together as focus
is on the divine qualities as a group.
 Nature is not just the internal but it is
shaped by the nurture and the culture, so
the behavior is designed by the nature,
nurture and the culture.
 But this system is not completely
deterministic but we still have the free
will to act.
 Individuality is never lost.
 Absorption for the cause gives one the
fearlessness.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 Fearlessness of a devotee depends on the
awareness of the devotee of the presence of
the Krishna in his life.
 Don’t tell Krishna how big the problem is
but tell to the problem how big Krishna is.
 Normally one seek the protection in the
family life but the Sanyasi has to travel
alone to preach so he need to be fearless.
 Sattva samsuddhi- Prabhupad talks of the
purity from the sexual indulgence,
externally by avoiding the sexual stimulus
and internally remembering the past
indulgence and the suffering.
 Traditionally the brahmachari was not
supposed to have the eye contact with the
women idea was that the soul in the male
body derives pleasure from seeing the women
form, specially through the eye contact but
it need to applied in the cultural context,
better to be humble that I’m not strong than
to take chances with this principle of
maintaining the purity.
 Charity should not just be activity but the
mentality and the mentality is developed
through the habit.
 Idea of the charity is to develop the
mentality of giving, amount is not important
but one should give regularly to have the
habit of giving.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 If the habit of giving is not there then
even if one has a lot doesn’t give the
charity, so one should develop the habit of
giving.
 Marriage is not for the sense gratification,
sexuality is the part of the life but the
life should not be sexualized.
 Student means to study, scriptural study
helps one to understand the spirituality.
 Primarily the brahmachari is supposed to
assist the Sanyasi and be the servant.
 In the current set up very difficult to
implement the Varnasrama system.
 Austerity is the accepting the voluntary
discomfort for the higher cause.
 Arjavam- truthfulness is specially meant for
the Brahmana.
 Anarthas pollute the mind but also affect
the body.
 When there is reason to be angry but one
remains calm is tolerance, one should not
get affected by small things as keeping the
ultimate aim in the mind.
 A cultured person doesn’t relish discussing
the faults of others.
 We can discuss the faults of others when we
don’t get pleasue from it.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 A devotee sees the spiritual potential of
everyone and wants everyone to progress so
he doesn’t like to do fault finding.
 One should have the aversion to fault
finding.
 No need to find the faults even in the
karmis, we need to encourage everyone to
progress.
 No need to be envious of others as need to
see what is appropriate to our
psychophysical nature.
 In spiritual life we should not expect
respect but need to respect the others as
Krishna is in the heart of them.
 Praise should deflate the mind and not
inflate the ego.
 We should be aware of the inadequacy we have
and still Krishna is using us in the
service, so no need to get carried away by
the praise.
 We have the serious mission so we should not
allow the mind to be frivolous.
VERSE 16.2:-

 Dambha means to announce oneself as

religious even though one has a sinful
nature.
 Darpa means pride due to wealth, knowledge
and the like.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 Abhimäna means to desire respect from others
or attachment to wife, sons and other
things.
CCP:-

 Egoist is the person who thinks I’m the

great person and egotist speaks about the
ones greatness constantly.
 Dambha is trying to pose although one is
not.
 Parusya is the anger expressed through the
speech, harshness of the speech.
 Sign of the gentle person is that he speaks
sensitively, politely.
VERSE 16.5:-
CCP:-

 Arjuna was feeling that he belongs to the

asurik group so lord here is pacifying the
Arjuna by saying that you are born with the
godly qualities.
 For Ksatriya to fight for the dharma is not
bad.
VERSE 16.6:-

 When a person in this world of men restricts

his inborn attraction and repulsion through
the injunctions of scripture and performs
goals according to the scriptures, he is
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
godly. When he gives up scriptural
injunctions and acts against scripture under
the control of attraction and repulsion, he
is demonic.
 dvayä ha präjapatyä deväç cäsuräç ca: the
deva and the asura, these two were produced
by Brahmä. (Båhad Äraëyaka Upaniñad 1.3.1)
CCP:-

 The details of the divine qualities don’t

only refer to this chapter only but to other
previous chapters like ch 9,6,10.
VERSE 16.7:-

 Artificial equality of the women has not

does any good in the society.
CCP:-

 The behavior of the person should be guided

by the scriptures.
 Those who oppose the lord Vishnu and the
words of the lord Vishnu are demoniac.
 Demons don’t need to be cruel faced, ugly
looking anyone can be demon.
 In the war of the Mahabharata the duryodhana
may not have the looks of the demons but he
has the mentality of the demon.
 Modern way of thinking is that the
scriptures are just the books before the
scientific invention and the they are just
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
meant for the some moral codes and nothing
more than that they are mere the
mythological books, but the scriptures are
the manual for the humans to live in this
world as per the instructions of the lord.
 Best way the women can contribute is the
natural psychophysical nature of them; no
male can play the role of the mother.
 Maternal role of the women is more conducive
for the spiritual advancement that the
sexual role as it creates the unhealthy
atmosphere and they can be used ,can feel
lonely in the advanced age also the climate
created by this in the society is insecure.
 When the sexual role is too advertised then
motherhood is neglected and the generation
comes out are disturbed and they disturbing
the society.
 Independence of the women doesn’t mean they
have to be copy cat of the men.
 Women may not have the sexual appeal
throughout the life but they can have the
motherhood throughout the life.
 Women should not sexuality identify
themselves and disturb themselves and
others.
VERSE 16.8:-

 The Lord then describes the theory of

svabhäva or nature, advocated by the
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
Buddhists. The world does not arise from the
intercourse between men and women
(aparaspara sambhütam) or like a potter
produces a pot (with intention), since the
parents produce a child with lack of
knowledge. Even after men and women enjoy
one time only, children appear, and
scorpions appear from sweat spontaneously.
Thus creation takes place by its own nature,
spontaneously, by natures inherent
properties.
 The Lord describes the theory of the
Lokäyatas (Carvaka). What more can be said?
There is no purpose of the world except to
fulfill lust. The lust between men and women
alone is the cause of the world, being the
motive for all action. Haitukam from hetu
indicates some motive.
 the Jains say that is the cause is ones own
will—whatever one can imagine according to
his reasoning power, he will say that is the
cause of the world.
 He speaks first of one soul (impersonal)
philosophy. This world is false (asatyam),
filled with error, like thinking shell is
silver. The world has no basis
(apratiñöham), like a flower in the sky. It
has no God as a cause for its creation,
maintenance and destruction (anéçvaraù).
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
Being of this nature, it is just composed of
an illusion.
CCP:-

 In this verse the lord is moving from the

activity to the mentality of the demoniac.
 Mayavadis say this world is false.
 Atheism has been there throughout the
history, there have always been the people
who wanted to deny the lord.
 Sanskrit has the largest atheistic
literature than any other language in the
world.
 Buddhism and the Jainism are the rebellious
religion to the Vedic culture.
 Although the Buddhism and the Jainism are
atheistic but they are not materialistic and
they share many cultural similarities with
the Vedic culture want to pursue the goal
beyond the life but have the different
methods to attain that goal.
 Before Newton theism-god as the creator and
the controller after Newton god creator but
not controller as the natural mechanism
maintain the world after the Darwin atheism
no god as the controller and no god as the
maintainer.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 Freud proposed that everything is based on
the sexuality and promoted the free sexual
indulgence.
 This world is temporary but not false we can
go beyond it by following the process not
just by wishing it away.
VERSE 16.9:-
CCP:-

 Soul’s spiritual inclination is destroyed by

the excessive material enjoyment tendency.
 Fundamental paradox of the economics,
limited resources and the unlimited desires.
 As long as the person has the materialistic
vision he will work like anything for
enjoyment.
 People work hard and spend the leisure time
watching the TV which shows the rich and the
sexually attractive people which fill them
with the greed and the lust, advertisement
creates the thought that what they have is
useless and they need to purchase things in
the market for that they need to work hard
they again watch the TV and again same trap
so world is going through the wws- worldwide
stupidity.
 The weapons of the mass destruction are so
bad that they cannot even be destroyed as
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
they can pollute the world in any
atmosphere.
VERSE 16.10:-

 Dambha means that they act for being known

as religious even though they are
irreligious.
 Mäna means that they proclaim themselves to
be worshippable, though they are not worthy
of respect.
 Mada means that they project themselves the
most elevated of persons though they have no
good qualities.
CCP:-

 Everybody has the lust but the demoniac

people take shelter of the lust as all in
all thinking there is no problem that the
lust cannot solve.
 Devotee think there is no problem which the
Krishna cannot solve contrary to the
demoniac thinking.
 The unclean work can also refer to the left
hand tantra where the people do abominable
things in sex and think that this is the way
for the spiritual advancement.
 When people don’t have the moral reference
they go imbalance. Ex becoming naked for the
animals, for the sports.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
VERSE 16.11, 12:-
CCP:-

 Demons are motivated by the lust and greed.

 Chintan is the contemplation on the lord,
but if the mind doesn’t have the steady
satisfying thing which is absolute then the
mind thinks of the worldly things.
 Due to no stabilizing shelter people are the
sway of the mind which is flickering.
 One of the primary qualities of the modern
world is the presence of anxiety and stress.
 People who are afflicted by the anxiety
giving up the anxiety are not easy.
 Anxiety comes by the desire and the
attachment.
 Desire for the sense gratification is the
main cause of the stress as the person works
very hard to gain the wealth to enjoy and
had to take a lot of stress.
 Object fro which the people are chasing are
not under control and unlimited people are
competing for them to gratify their senses
so such people become kama, krodha parayana
and not the narayana parayana.
 Kama not fulfilled then the krodha comes as
the person becomes angry on anything and
anyone who is coming in between his sense
gratification.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 When the kama is fulfilled then it leads to
greed as he has to the demands for the
continuing of the kama – a lover need to
work hard to fulfill the desires of his
partner.
 Then they take to any mean which may be
illegal to fulfill their desire so they earn
by the illegal means.
 Desire to enjoy is not fulfilled even at the
time of the death and the person wants to
extend his life even at death.
LINK:- how the people commit violence to earn
the money to gratify the senses.
VERSE 16.13, 14, and 15:-
CCP:-

 In the world everyone wants to be best, but

the devotee wants to be best to give the
Krishna recognition, not for boasting their
abilities.
 Devotee wants to excel to glorify Krishna
not to supersede Krishna.
 No one is equal to Krishna but demoniac
think no one is equal to them.
 Helplessly frustrating for the person who
was on the top if he can’t perform.
 Nobody can be on the top for long.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 Ego maniac means irrational obsession, one
can’t think about anything else.
 Now a day’s religion is also is the social
cosmetic for the people they use it as the
face transformers not the heart
transformers, they want to appear as
religion in the eyes of the society but they
don’t want to change their hearts.
 Idea of donation is if we can’t give our
heart to the Krishna then we should give at
least what is in our heart.
 Religion should be sanctuary for the soul
not the gymnasium for the ego.
VERSE 16.16:-
CCP:-

 Illusion is not one strand but the network

they can’t see the spiritual reality.
 Sankaracharya exposes the material life in
the composition balavastha krida sakta……
 In childhood attached to the playing ,in the
youth attached to the sense gratification
and in the old age overcome by the anxiety
as can’t do anything to control others and
the ones own body doesn’t help, so in such
life there is no impetus for the spiritual
life.
 But in the modern world people in the
childhood is sexualized by the media, in the
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
youth they are attached to the sports with
emotions, money and in the old age they want
to be sexual active.

VERSE 16.17:-
CCP:-

 Dambha is projecting what they are not.

 Scripture recommend Nama yagnya they perform
the yagnya in the name only.
 Here Krishna has described the wide gamet of
the psychology of the demoniac.
LINK: - Krishna will describe what their
destination is.
VERSE 16.18:-
CCP:-

 Chapter summary –
 Divine demoniac qualities
 Activities of the demoniac
 Consequences of the demoniac activities.
 Choice between the divine and the demoniac.
 Lust is the desire to enjoy and the krodha
is the rage that comes by the unfulfilled
desires.
 People take the shelter of the lust, anger,
and greed and make it god.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 Divine and the demoniac qualities they are
the feature of our material nature at the
level of the soul, soul is never demoniac.
 Blasphemy is the envy which comes out in the
harsh words, irrational.
LINK;- Krishna now describes the consequences ,
what happens to such people.
VERSE 16.19:-
CCP:-

 Demoniac is not just the body but the

mentality also.
 In some bodies there is naturally the
tendency to be demoniac but there are
exceptions like prahlad maharaj, vritrasura.
 This verse doesn’t support the eternal
damnation.
 Prabhupad translates the dvisatah as the
mischievous as the bhavanuvad,as the father
the activities of the living entities are
like mischievous kids for the father so the
idea is not the condemnation but the warning
to not to do them.
 Words are both the carrier of meaning and
the emotions.
 Semantics’ – literal and aesthetics-
emotional.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 Translation has to be done by the person who
is expert both in the context and the
meaning.
 So casting eternally to the hell here
doesn’t have the literal meaning as there
are many places where the Krishna encourages
everyone and shows his accommodating nature
so here it is most like the tough love.
 Here the word species used by the Prabhupad
is for the consciousness not the biological
meaning which is regularly used.
VERSE 16.20:-
CCP:-

 Vedic concept of the hell is different from

the Judeo-Christian concept of the hell
where they say it is the place foe the
eternal torture bit in the Vedic view it the
place for the reformation.
 If our actions don’t have the reactions then
we will go on suffering due to committing
them but the consequences remind us to
behave properly.
 The hell can be said the hard school.
 Only devotional service to the Krishna
nothing else not even the hell is eternal.
VERSE 16.21:-
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 If they avoid these three things—lust, anger
and greed—they can avoid the demonic nature.
CCP:-

 There are two metaphor in this verse door

which is physical thing but the lust anger
and greed are not the physical things if we
get too much attached to these things then
we will degrade.
 To conquer lust anger and greed one need the
higher goal.
 So here the door is the metaphor for the
mentality.
 Also the destruction of the soul is metaphor
used for the destruction of the spiritual
mentality of the soul.
 There is no possibility of the liberation
from the material entanglement means as long
as the person has the inclination for these
things till then he can’t be liberated.
VERSE 16.22:-
CCP:-

 We act in self defeating way by acting with

lust anger and greed.
 Everybody has to suffer for the bad doing.
 This verse indicates that it is possible to
become free from these Anarthas, by making
the choices which are in the self interest.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
VERSE 16.23:-

 In the human form of life, a living entity

is expected to be sane and to follow the
regulations given for elevating his life to
the highest platform, but if he does not
follow them, then he degrades himself. But
even if he follows the rules and regulations
and moral principles and ultimately does not
come to the stage of understanding the
Supreme Lord, then all his knowledge becomes
spoiled. And even if he accepts the
existence of God, if he does not engage
himself in the service of the Lord his
attempts are spoiled. Therefore one should
gradually raise himself to the platform of
Kåñëa consciousness and devotional service;
it is then and there that he can attain the
highest perfectional stage, not otherwise.
 The human life is especially meant for
purifying one's existence, and one who does
not follow the rules and regulations cannot
purify himself, nor can he attain the real
stage of happiness.
 One cannot give up the three gates to hell
without practice of ones own dharma or
açräma. And practicing ones own dharma can
not be properly fulfilled without following
scripture. Therefore the intelligent person
should act according to scripture.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
CCP:-

 When one is impelled by the lust then one

cannot think about the ultimate goal.
 Lust makes the person difficult to achieve
anything in any field.
 Discipline makes in any field easy to
achieve the success.
 Sane means not giving to the short term
impulses and getting carried away by them.
 Feelings can sometime kill us faster than
the bullets, one has to be careful.
 We don’t deny the feeling but we regulate
them according to the scriptures, like
marriage and not enjoying whimsically giving
up all the prohibitions.
VERSE 16.24:-

 This material energy is constituted of the

three modes of material nature. One has to
raise himself at least to the mode of
goodness before the path to understanding
the Supreme Lord can be opened.
 Without raising oneself to the standard of
the mode of goodness, one remains in
ignorance and passion, which are the cause
of demoniac life.
 The four faults are bhrama (error), karaëa
pätava (limitation of the senses), pramäda
(inattention), and vipralipsä (cheating).
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE

CCP:-

 One should know what is to be done and what

not to be done as per the scriptures and
knowing this one should act accordingly.
 Acting as per
 1) Fashion – doing something because others
are doing, fashion is one of the most
misleading ways of doing our activities as
it is not at all connected with the
scriptures so we should act wisely.
 2) Tradition – due to something which has
been always done in the past, but that
doesn’t make it right it can be wrong like
eating the meat as forefathers were eating
it.
 3) Doing because I feel like doing, but our
feeling can mislead us.
 4) logic- doing as it feels logical, but the
logic can be misleading.
 So the definitive way for doing the things
is the scriptures as they are free of the
defects.
 Other ways like logic can be used to make
decision but the primary support should be
the sastra.
 Root cause of falldown is the aversion to
understanding the supreme lord.
CHAPTER 16 THE DIVINE AND DEMONIAC NATURE
 If one gives up the opportunity to self
realization in the human life and engages in
the sense gratification then it is like
giving up the million dollars and finding
the food in the garbage.
