Electives

Elective 1. Translation. This course is designed to be an introduction to the dynamics, processes, and practice of
translation from Cebuano or Filipino and vice versa. The course will combine practical
translation work with use of a range of methodologies and utilities for exploiting and
managing language resource for the purpose of trnslation. The students will learn the
fundamentals of translating literary works, different text types, commercial advertisments,
and other materials. By the end of the course, it is anticipated thaaaat the students will be
able to prepare and compare translations of literary and non-literary texts and be able to
identify the merits and flaws of each translation. The student will become familiar with
various procedures of translation and will learn to implement them in his or her own
translation works. Lastly, the students will be able to construct a translation with an
intended purpose and artistic effect.

Elective 2. Developmental Reading. This course is designed to advance the reading skills of college students. Their
discerning the main ideas with major and minor supporting details, sequencing, locating
facts; using contextual clues, drawing conclusions, making interferences, understanding
figurative language, detectingpurpose and tone, summarizing and outlining are the skills
will be developed. Vocabulary extension, critical thinking, and pleasurereading are also
stressed. This will also prepare students to develop a lesson for college reading classes.
