Demonstration 3-1: Set Up Item Number Generation

Browser requirement: Use Google Chrome version 42+ to complete all demonstrations and
practices in this training course.

Overview
Vision Corporation wants to have unique item numbers generated when a configured item is
created. The product administration creates an item class and sets up the parameters for
automated item generation.

Prerequisites
None

User Login: scm00.Instructor

Steps

Navigate to the Manage Item Classes Task

1. In the Navigator, click Setup and Maintenance.
2. On the Setup and Maintenance page, click the Search icon.
3. On the Search page, enter Manage Item in the Search field, and click the Search button.
4. Click the Manage Item Classes link to navigate to the setup task.

Create Item Class

5. On the Manage Item Classes page, click the Create icon to add a new class.
6. In the Create Item Class dialog box, add the following data:
Item Class: CTO Demo
Internal name: CTO_Demo (will auto populate)
Description: Demo model class
7. Click Save and Add Details to close the dialog box and view the Edit Item Class page.
8. Open the Item Management tab to add the number generation details.
9. Ensure that the “Item creation allowed” check box is selected.
10. Set the following parameters for Number Generation:
Item Number Generation Method: User Defined
Configured Item Number Generation Method: Sequence
11. After you set the configured item number generation method to sequence, additional details
appear. Enter or select the following values:
Starting Number: 100
Prefix Type: Model Item Number
Increment by: 1
Suffix Type: None
Delimiter: Asterisk
12. Leave all other values set to the defaults, and click the Save and Close button.

Practice 3-1: Compare Base Model Item to Configured Item

Overview
Vision Corporation builds its products to order. You specify the details of the products you order
in a product configurator session, which is based on models that specify required and optional
components. After you submit the configuration on the order, a configured item is created
automatically.

Prerequisites
The ATO product is in more than one organization. At least one order is submitted, so that a
configured item is created.

User Login: scmXX.student (XX is the student number assigned to you)

Summary of Steps:
 Navigate to the Product Information Management Work Area
 Search for the CTO Product
 Compare Base Model Details to Configured Item Details

Steps:
This activity provides instructions for:
 Searching for the base model and configured item.
 Navigating through the product definitions to compare the details.

Navigate to the Product Information Management Work Area

1. In the Navigator, click Product Information Management under Product Management.
2. On the Overview page, open the Tasks panel tab, and select the Manage Items task.

Search for the CTO Product

3. In the Item search field on the Manage Items page, enter: AT6751000. Select Starts with,
if it isn’t already selected. Then click the Search button.
 Notice that multiple items are presented as search results.
 What are the differences among these items?
4. Can you identify the configured items?

Compare Base Model Details to Configured Item Details

5. Click the link for one of the items that has no suffix to navigate to the item definition details.
A new tab is added.
6. Return to the Manage Items tab and click the link for an item that has a suffix. An additional
tab for this item is added.
7. Click back and forth between the two item tabs.
 Examine the header and overview information for the two item definitions. Are there
any differences?

8. Open the Specifications subtab for each item definition.
 Under Item Structure, is the base model populated differently?
 What other parameters are different in this section?
9. Select each of the links under the Item Organization heading and compare the two item
definitions.
 Is everything that is specified for the model present in the configured item definition?
10. Select the Structures subtab for each item definition.
 Has the structure data been replicated for the configured item?
11. On the Model Item Definition tab for AT6751000, select the Primary link to examine the
model structure.
12. On the View menu, make sure that Component Order Management, Item Structure, and
Main are selected.
13. Examine the settings for each component item.
 Is there more than one item type? Which ones are required?
14. Click the arrow next to one of the option classes to view the options.
 What happens if you click the option class name link?
15. Click Cancel to exit the model structure detail.
16. Select the Associations subtab for each item definition.
 What do categories represent?
 Do you see any differences between the model item definition and the configured item
definition?
17. Select the Categories subtab for each item definition.
 What do associations represent?
 Do you see any differences between the model item definition and the configured item
definition?
