Lesson Idea Name: Adding and Subtracting Pies

Content Area: Math
Grade Level(s): 3

Content Standard Addressed: CCSS.Math.Content.3.NF.A.3d

Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size.
Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results
of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): In order to address Universal Design for Learning standards, students
will be able to build knowledge by actively exploring real-world issues and problems, developing ideas and
theories and pursuing answers and solutions by using an education application on an ipad in order to
understand how cutting pies and adding and subtracting them arrives the student to their answer.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will begin the lesson by asking students what they know about
adding and subtracting fractions. Then, the teacher will show the BrainPop video and ask the students to
think about why they are able to add the fractions like they see in the video. Following the video, the students
will be given an ipad and be asked to make their own pie on a creative app. Then the students will be given a
worksheet and using the pies they created on their ipads, the students will be asked to solve the addition and
subtraction problems. After students have mastered this standard, they will be assessed through a quiz

created by the teacher on BrainPop. Students will be able to use interactive answering through ipads in order
to reach all students learning levels.

Reflective Practice: The activities created in this lesson plan will allow for creativity of the students, while also
building online stimulation, in order for students to be able to understand how to add and subtract fractions
while also giving them personal experience of making their favorite pies. To extend the lesson, the teacher
could have the students add and subtract fractions using a different method of adding and subtracting, by
allowing the students to come up with the material that they want to add. Using a Smart Board could help
this interactive activity, by allowing the students to show their material to the class.
