Southern Power Installs Hydro-Optic™ UV Systems at Plant Harris to
Provide Chemical-free Disinfection & Dechlorination
Southern Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company,
installed Hydro-Optic™ (HOD) UV technology for chemical- free disinfection and dechlorination in December 2015 at their natural gas facility Plant Harris. One HOD UV system was installed to treat and disinfect raw water before it entered the ultrafiltration pre-treatment system. A UV dose rate of less than 150 mJ/cm2 provides disinfection of deliterous microbes, including microbial induced corrosion (MIC), while also reducing and stabilizing the chlorine demand of the process water. A second HOD UV system was installed to dechlorinate water prior to entering the reverse osmosis (RO) system in HOD™ UV INSTALLATION order to protect the membrane elements from biological AT PLANT HARRIS fouling and oxidation from chlorine. A UV dose rate of less than 1,000 mJ/cm2 replaces the use of sodium bisulfite, Raw Water Treatment: Disinfection reduces the usage of chlorination, and achieves a chemical- (1) Model RZB300-12 free dechlorination process to improve RO feed water. 3 Flow rate: 1,500 gpm (341 m /hr) Separating the disinfection and dechlorination applications and using two unique HOD UV systems provided the facility Percent UV Transmittance: 89% UVT with increased WTP efficiency, including membrane life and quality, at lower capital and operating costs since each HOD Pre-RO Treatment: Dechlorination UV unit operated under application-specific dose conditions.
