CAVITE FIELD EXPOSURE TRIP

General objective
To expose the students to environmental projects/programs that were developed to address
the marine resource conservation and evaluate these from the perspective of a social-
ecological system.

Specific objectives
To determine the current practices and gaps of governance, ecological, and socio-economic
aspects of Sea Turtle Conservation Program by/through the following:
i) Naic LGU initiatives
ii) CABATALES Network initiatives
iii) Pawikan Festival

To determine the goods and services derived by the community and the socio-economic
benefits;

To prepare a stakeholder profile and the issues/concerns in relation to the People’s


Organizations/Community involved in the Pawikan Conservation Program.

The Main Activities


The concerned stakeholders will give a presentation on the background, existing
management practices, and socio-economic aspects of the Pawikan Conservation Program.
This will be followed by a 30-minute open forum. Students will also have an opportunity to
also interact with community members involved in the program.

Group outputs
The class will be divided into four (4) groups. Each group will have a written report (5-10
pages) and do an oral presentation (30 minutes presentation plus 30 minutes discussion)
on the last day of the course.

Groups and scope of oral reporting coverage:


1. Officers/Administration-related activities/issues (TWG & LGU officials) - tDDS
2. Women’s/Gender-related activities/issues (Women, youth, elderly, et al) – Ilaw ng
Tahanan
3. Bantay Pawikan/Enforcement-related activities/issues (Bantay Dagat members) –
Palibhasa Lalaki
4. Community-related activities/issues (PO members & officers) – Di Spice Girls
Analyses of Social-Ecological Systems on Marine Resource Conservation

See guide questions below but you can prepare your own set of questions relevant to the
stakeholder assigned to your group.

1. What is/are the dominant socio-ecological issues/concerns/problems in the field site you
visited?

2. How are these issues and concerns connected to the economic benefits that people
derive from their environment particularly tropical marine ecosystems?

3. Describe how the people (particularly the coastal residents) are utilizing the various
tropical marine ecosystems. How are these utilization pattern/ situation addressing the
needs and benefits of present and future generations? You may use the total economic
value table/ diagram to itemize the goods and services that the community derive from their
tropical marine ecosystems.

4. What is/are the possible solution(s) for the identified socio-ecological issues/concerns/
problems? Is/are the solutions focused on social solutions, ecological solutions,
technological solutions, or a combination of these? Explain.

5. Describe and discuss the role of "governance" in implementing interventions to "solve" or


address the identified socio-ecological issues/concerns/problems.

The powerpoint presentations are to be submitted by 11:00 AM on 23 February 2018


(Friday) prior to the oral reporting session. The written reports are to be submitted by 11:59
PM on 23 February 2018 (Friday) to ncanasco1@up.edu.ph.

11:00 AM – 12:00 NN: Group 1 (tDDS)


1:00 AM – 2:00 PM: Group 2 (Ilaw ng Tahanan)
2:00 AM – 3:00 PM: Group 3 (Palibhasa Lalaki)
3:00 AM – 4:00 PM: Group 4 (Di Spice Girls)

Each 1-hour reporting session shall consist of the oral reporting proper (30 minutes only)
and an open forum/discussion.
