Onshore oil exploration begins in
Cabinda province
After an eight-year build-up, onshore oil and natural gas extraction has started in Angola’s
Cabinda province at a block operated by Pluspetrol Angola ‒ a subsidiary of Argentinean group
Pluspetrol.
Ruben Alvarado, the director of operations at Pluspetrol, said that the group had a lot of
experience in onshore oil and had operated in this business across the world, including in the
Peruvian Amazon.
By the end of the year the company expects to produce 7,000 barrels of oil per day at 10 active
wells, and has a 27km pipeline to carry the oil from the Castanha/Coco field to the Malongo
terminal, where the oil export terminal is located.
Alvarado also said that as well as the Castanha/Coco field, there was another project that would
focus on producing natural gas to supply the Malembo power plant, which produced electricity
for the city of Cabinda and town of Landana.
The Argentinean group has invested US$458 million on prospecting, development and
production in this project between 2005 and 2013.
