Interestingly, each aspirant has

In elections, like everywhere in
life, the elevator pitch, which is a
short description and key strengths
and attributes of the person or
the idea, is meant to influence the
decisions of others.
Given the fact that all five
contestants have been in the caucus
for a reasonable time, it is naive to
assume that other members would
not be aware of their key strengths
and ideas that they propose to bring
to the table in this election.
Therefore, it is likely that the
intention is not merely to sway the
decision of fellow caucus members
more directly, but also to create a
favourable ‘perception,’ which in
turn could influence the decisions of
individual caucus members.
Given that a ballot is due within
the National caucus to elect their
new leader, it’s high time to get
acquainted with the main elevator

a whirlwind trip to New Zealand
to chair the Board meetings of its
wholly-owned subsidiary Bank of
Baroda New Zealand.

landed in Wellington in the morning
and was in Auckland late afternoon,
and was, scheduled to fly back to
India later in the night, appeared
more like a scene from a popular
Hollywood movie.
However, Mr Mehta was able to
achieve all goals behind this quick
dash to the land of Aotearoa as
he expressed later in an exclusive
interview with The Indian
Weekender.
The fact that Mr Mehta was able
to find some time out of his highly
packed diary and speak with The
Indian Weekender on some important
issues regarding the overall well-
being and general health of the
Indian Banking sector and Bank of
Baroda NZ’s growth strategies for
the next fiscal is of much value.

Indian Weekender, Mr Mehta told us
about the performance of the bank in
New Zealand and what are the new
products coming up for the Kiwi
Indian community in New Zealand.
IWK: Is it your first visit to
New Zealand?
Mayank Mehta: Actually, I am
on the board of Bank of Baroda,
New Zealand subsidiary and it’s my
second visit since September last
year, and I have managed to come
so far only on a short trip for such
meetings.
IWK: Given that your visit is
happening at such a crucial
time can you tell us more about
the general health of the entire
banking sector in India?
Mayank:(Smiles) Banking sector
is in good shape. A lot of activity
is going in the banking system
in India; you must have heard
about the capitalisation plan of
the government, it has been very
supportive of the banking industry.
The only challenge banks are facing
now is asset management. I think
legal reforms are also happening
now so hopefully; it will help banks
time. The future is bright for us.
The budget announcement is also
encouraging for banks to particularly
grow in the agricultural sector, rural
India and also to promote ‘Make in
India’ programme of government.
Digitalisation is another key area,
and all the banks have been very
actively engaging in this area.
IWK: There have been a lot of
reforms in the financial and
capital sector in India, what is
your take in that? Is it taking
Indian economy in the right
direction?
Mayank: Yes, today if you see, the
government, our Prime Minister
is excited about ‘Make in India’
programme, and the entire attention
of the world is towards India, to
invest into the Indian market as it is
the safest and right place to invest
which will help future growth.
IWK: What is your vision for
Bank of Baroda NZ for the
next two quarters?
Mayank: BOB NZ operations
started seven years ago, and our
achievement is very satisfactory
so far. It is a clean bank, no NPA,
would like to expand. The idea
going forward would be to introduce
new products that suit the local
market, local business, to add some
saving scheme products, support
more export-related activities, and
agriculture-related too. The CEO of
BOB NZ is working on a strategy
and will be developing a 5-year plan.
Our objective is to grow in this space.
IWK: What is the timeframe
for the new products to come
out for the Kiwi Indians?
Mayank: A few of the products are
purely based on technology, and
surely that can be introduced in the
next one-year time.
IWK: How does BOB see this
Kiwi-Indian market in your
larger global strategy?
Mayank: As you know we are
operating in 23 countries, and have

and ethnicities through sport in
the second Ethkick West 7-a-side Football
Tournament to be held in the first week
of March.
This year, two Indian teams, NZ Indians
from Shri Ram Temple and Fiji Indian, have
registered to compete in the tournament. Other
teams playing the in the tournament are Zo,
NZ Kurdish Community, Croatia, NZ, Tuvalu,
China, Nepal, Burundi, United Nations,
Myanmar, Ethiopia (Ethio Lions), Britain,
Tamil/Sri Lankan, South Africa, Afghanistan,
Samoa, Kelston Youth Muslim FC, Rwanda,
and Japan.
The tournament will be held on Saturday,
March 3 at Fred Taylor Park, and kick off at
8 a.m. and finishes at 4 p.m. on the same day.

he Government of India has
launched a special initiative in
the form of ‘Bharat Ko Janiye
Quiz’ (Know India Quiz) to generate
interest among the youth, both NRI and
PIO to know and understand India.
The quiz will be open for overseas
Indian youth between age group of
18-35 years. There will be separate
categories for NRIs and PIOs.
The first round of the quiz will be
held in New Zealand some time in May
2018. The second round would be an
online quiz conducted by Ministry of
External Affairs, New Delhi. The third
(Semi Final and
Final round) will be
conducted in New
Delhi.
Three winners
from each of the
NRI and PIO
category in the first found conducted
in a particular country will move to the
subsequent rounds. All participants

cultural activity of Kiwis

ccording to the latest survey released
today by Statistics NZ, going to a park
or reserve is the most preferred cultural
activity for most Kiwis.
The survey called New Zealand General
Social Survey was done in 2016 and covered a
range of questions about cultural participation
and social well-being of New Zealanders.
The results of the survey were released
today by Statistics NZ stating that “Kiwis who
participate in cultural activities are more likely

to feel satisfied with life than those who don’t
participate.”
The results of the survey revealed that more
than 42 per cent Kiwis went to parks/reserves,
which was more than any other preferred
cultural activity.
Cultural participation covered a range of
activities, including going to a park or to see
a movie, as well as more creative pursuits, like
weaving, knitting, and carving, over a four-
week period.
“Kiwis who took part in cultural or
recreational activities were more likely to be
satisfied with their lives compared with those
who didn’t,” labour market and household
statistics senior manager Jason Attewell said.
“We know from overseas research that even
after accounting for other factors, such as
income and education levels, culturally active
people are happier,” Mr Attewell added.
About eight in ten adult New Zealanders
engage in some form of cultural activity, the
survey said.
The next most preferred cultural activity
that got the tick from Kiwis was going to the
movies.
About 35 per cent of people surveyed
preferred going to the movies.
The survey also revealed that participation
was higher in passive activities like going to a
park, a concert, or to the movies, in comparison
to active cultural participation, which includes
things like taking part in dance and theatre,
making films, knitting, and creative writing.

scrap ATM
fees

ive major banks of New Zealand have
finally committed to scrapping the ATM
fees levied when customers use their
cards with other bank’s ATM.
ANZ, ASB, BNZ, Westpac and Kiwibank
have all announced they will scrap the fee over
the coming weeks.
ANZ Bank New Zealand was the first bank
to remove the non-ANZ ATM fee on Monday,
February 19.
“In recent times we’ve been getting more
and more feedback from our customers that
they don’t think this type of fee is fair because
even though they’re using another bank’s
ATM, they’re still accessing their money,” said
Antonia Watson, ANZ New Zealand Managing
Director Retail and Business Banking.
This was followed by announcements by
other banks including ASB and Kiwibank on
Tuesday, February 20.
“We support industry moves to eliminate this
fee,” Russell Jones, ASB’s Executive General
Manager for Retail Banking said.
“This change will benefit our customers and
provide them with a greater level of freedom
and flexibility to decide when and where to
access their money,” Mr Jones further added.

Mohd. Rafi and Kishore Kumar never had

Ex-tropical cyclone Gita passes NZ,

leaving destruction in its wake

Buller, Grey and Selwyn
Districts, and in Christchurch City,
after ex-tropical cyclone passed
through the east coast of the South
Island on Wednesday morning.
Though for the Nelson-Tasman
region and New Plymouth district,
it was still in place till Wednesday
night. The authorities had declared
the state of emergency in seven
regions on Tuesday anticipating the
devastation that ex-cyclone Gita was
expected to bring to the South Island
of the country.
Announcing this on Wednesday
after the morning high tide passed
with no major flooding issues in the
city, Christchurch Mayor Lianne
Dalziel noted, “I felt it was important
to make the initial declaration
because the worst of the storm was
expected to hit overnight. I was
concerned that people could be
struggling to deal with flooding in
the dark. We were lucky this time.”
This is so as Christchurch
appeared to have escaped the worst
of ex-Tropical Cyclone Gita after
the cyclone split and tracked further
south than predicted. The rainfall in
the city was half the forecast figure.
Fortunately, there was little wind.
Some of the eastern bays on Banks
Peninsula did receive higher rainfall
and wind though. There was also
flooding around the city and signage
was placed at 28 sites.
Overall, the ex-tropical cyclone
brought heavy rain affecting parts
of the country on Tuesday, and early
morning Wednesday. Meanwhile,
eastern Otago was still seeing
persistent rain with some heavy falls
through Wednesday afternoon.
Many places recorded greater
than their average monthly rainfall
for February – in the space of just
a day or two. Notably, Kelburn
station in Wellington has recorded
its total historical average rainfall
for February in 24 hours. Maximum
wind gusts were recorded over the
Buller and Taranaki region; with
Westport and Hawera also facing
gusts of 118km/h and 130km/h
respectively.
There were thousands of power
outages as well. This included 1400
homes in the Taranaki region, 300
homes in the Pukerua Bay, and more
than 2000 properties in Manawatū,
Rangītikei and Whanganui.
The storm has also affected flights,
with operations in Christchurch,
Wellington and Nelson airports
suspended at several durations
during Tuesday and Wednesday.
Stretches of State Highway (SH) 1
along the east coast of South Island
were also closed due to flooding and
access to Kaikoura. It was re-
established with SH 70 via Waipara
and Waiau reopening on Wednesday
morning. A home just south of the
Kaikoura town was damaged after
gravel and flood waters filled it on
Tuesday night.
More than 40 schools across South
Island were closed anticipating
the ex-tropical cyclone’s arrival
on Tuesday. Many of those remain
closed on Wednesday.
The damage at the West Coast was
less than expected, as the region is
still recovering from ex-cyclone Fehi
and king tides of February 1.
SH 6 closed overnight Tuesday,
but reopened on Wednesday. It meant
that more than 100 tourists were
stranded around Westland.
In Golden Bay, north of Nelson,
about 6000 residents are still isolated
because the Takaka Hill road (SH 60)
has turned into a river due to 16 slips
resulting in two sections of the road
being completely washed away.
Repairs will take few days and
essential supplies are being taken to
the Golden Bay by boat as SH 60 is
the only route to the region.
With Gita now past its shores,
the civil defence teams across the
affected areas have shifted their
focus to recovery mode.

24 hours, good decisions were made
to declare local states of emergency
early. The Ministry of Civil Defence
and Emergency management is also
keeping an eye on the potential for
more heavy rain in South Canterbury
and Otago, and the effect of this on
river levels,” the Minister said, after
his visit.

Bhutanese community in New Zealand, in what was the first-ever live Nepali performance in the South Island

lovers, the live performance by
Rajesh Payal Rai, was nothing
like the city has seen before. Known for
the energy he brings to his live family-
friendly shows, Mr Rai, was in supreme
form, when he sang his most popular
Nepali songs including maile mayale
diyeko chino, nisthurilai Maya gari,
baiguni raichhau mayalu.
Akash Drukpa, Chairman of the
Bhutanese Society of Christchurch
New Zealand Inc., which organised the
concert to mark the 10th resettlement
anniversary of the Bhutanese community
in New Zealand after spending 18-20
years in refugee camps in Nepal, added,
“The crowd went crazy when Rai sang
songs from his latest album Darshan
Namaste 3. Overall, I would say that
the concert titled Rai is King was a
stupendous success.”
Giving some limelight to local talent
as well, the Bhutanese Society of Nelson
also performed at the stage, led by the
group’s lead vocalist Samrit Rai.
On how far the Bhutanese community
has come in New Zealand, Mr Drupka,
who himself came to Christchurch
from Nepal in 2010, noted, “The first
intake of four families arrived here
in March 2008 from refugee camps
in Nepal. Then others joined them. I
myself came two years later. It was a
massive transition for all of us. Not
just because we migrated to another
country, but because we migrated from
refugee camps. It was a painful life, in
a limbo, full of frustrations, with our
identity taken away from us. But being
resettled here changed that. Some call it
going from hell to heaven. We have had
our struggles here but we are growing,
we are adapting and most of us live a
good life, and can finally say that we
belong to a country – for the first time
for many like me who were born in the
refugee camps.
He said some 350 Bhutanese have
been resettled in Christchurch since
2008, though some moved to Palmerston
North and Feilding following the
2010/2011 earthquakes.
The event was attended
by Christchurch Mayor
Lianne Dalziel, City
Councillor Raf Manji,
and Labour MPs Poto
Williams, Ruth Dyson
and Duncan Webb.
The Mayor in her
speech thanked the
Bhutanese community
for their part in making
Christchurch a diverse-
multicultural city.
Mr Drupka also appreciated the
welcome Bhutanese refugees have
received in Christchurch and concluded,
“We are attached to this city, and have
been through a lot here, including the
earthquakes. The City Council, along
with other agencies, has been immensely
supportive of us. We wanted to invite
the Mayor and the MPs and show them
how much we appreciate what they
do for us. Most of the politicians in
Christchurch have been very supportive
of the refugees. Special mention is for
City Councillor Raf Manzi, who used
to volunteer for a family from our
community back in 2009, before he got
elected to be a councillor.”

of Maha ShivRatri last week at the Bromley Community Centre.
The festival – which marks the convergence of divine powers of
Lord Shiva and Goddess Shakti by virtue of their marriage as well
as the occasion when Lord Shiva performed his celestial dance
Tandav – is observed on the sixth night of the Hindu calendar’s
Phalgun month.
Giving details of the event, Vinesh Prakash, Secretary of the
Christchurch Fiji Association, said, “It’s a very popular festival in
Fiji, and devotees observe a day-long fast and offer fruits, flowers
and bel leaves on the Shivaling. Ritual baths of Shivaling with milk
is also a very important ritual of the festival. While in Christchruch
we perform an abridged version of the rituals involved, in Fiji, the
celebrations continue throughout the night, with devotees singing
Shiv bhajans all night long. Here, our evening-long celebrations
included a havan, reciting of Shiv chalisa, and sharing of Shiv-
Parvati stories. ”
Moving forward, the association is planning for Holi celebrations
Fiji style in March, which include the very Fijian tradition of
faag (holi-related folk songs) mandalis, which visit homes of
friends and relatives, exchanging sweets, applying colours and
playing music.

elen Clark says Fiji
should be proud of its

The former New Zealand Prime
Minister, a fierce critic of the 2006
takeover who imposed sanctions
against Fiji, said that was water

“rough spot” when she was NZ PM.
But she said she had been
impressed with Fiji’s performance on

arrived at Sheraton Fiji Resort,

the Sheraton Fiji Resort, Denarau,

Pacific. I hope the NZ government
will be a good partner with Fiji.
“Things have moved on in Fiji.
We can only look forward to Fiji
development hopes and Fiji and NZ
being good neighbours.”
She praised former Fijian diplomat

know well at the United Nations.

General Assembly. He is now a

ndia had an intense start of the year in its
foreign policy area with several multilateral
engagements lined up simultaneously.
Amongst several key engagements, was
the third edition of the Raisina Dialogue –
India’s leading forum on geopolitics and geo-
economics – held in New Delhi from January
16-18.
The fact that this key conference had failed
to create a buzz or gain enough attention in
this part of the world, for the third consecutive
edition, only suggests the array of challenges
that India faces.
One such challenge is of getting an in-
commensurate representation in the global
media, in comparison to what its main strategic
rival China, often manages to get almost
effortlessly. 17
To make a case, a recent and seemingly
routine editorial-piece, published in Beijing's
state news agency Xinhua on January 27,

to make a lot of “extra preparations
and precautions” for draping the
“Nav-wari sari”, including pinning
it up tightly and taping it in many
places to ensure it did not come off
her body from the staggering height
as she soared down, with strong

One of the most common spam
violations is the use of multiple

tweets. "Twitter prohibits any
attempt to use automation for the
purposes of posting or disseminating
spam, and such behaviour may result
in enforcement action," the company
said in a blog post on Thursday.
The company is making changes
to TweetDeck and the Twitter API to
limit the ability of users to perform
coordinated actions across multiple
accounts. Users of TweetDeck will
no longer be able to select multiple
accounts through which to perform an
action such as tweeting, retweeting,
liking or following.
"These changes are an important
step in ensuring we stay ahead of
malicious activity targeting the
crucial conversations taking place on
Twitter – including elections in the
United States and around the world,"

lmost everyone innately feels some
degree of emptiness. It is like
something gnawing away at us from
within and thus we are constantly in search of
something to fill up that emptiness.
For many of us if we come home to an empty
house we cannot simply sit down and feel
relaxed or happy.
There is this agitation within that drives us to
“do something”.
We may open the refrigerator and simply
stand there looking into it, or we immediately
turn on the TV and begin channel surfing, or
more commonly we take out our phone and
call or text someone, browse the Internet or go
onto social media - looking, looking, looking.
Looking for what? Something to fill that empty
space inside – because we are not at peace
within ourselves.

there has to be noise because we are in such a profession, but
there has to be a balance.”
