LESSON PLAN

Course: OC TH 6140 Pediatric Skills and Intervention

Title and Description of Lesson: Sensory Processing. The purpose of this lesson is to
provide students with an overview of sensory processing disorders and their impact on
occupational performance.

Total Class Time: 90 minutes (1:00-2:30)

Lesson Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
 Articulate the concept of sensory processing
 Identify the seven different sensory systems
 Understand how dysfunction in each sensory system impacts occupational
performance
 Apply knowledge to a case study

Teaching/Instructional Method:
The lesson will include a combination of instruction methods, including lecture, video,
questionnaire, small group work, and discussion.

Instructional Materials and Resources needed:

 Laptop with PowerPoint and youtube video “A Child’s View of Sensory Processing”
 Sensory system printouts
 Magnifier
 Gloves
 Pencils
 Kleenex
 Spices
 Essential oils
 Netted scarf
 Hand fidgets
 Hot Tamales
 Lemonheads
 Copies of case study

Lesson Plan

1. Warm-Up (10 minutes)

 Opening slide on PowerPoint:

 Begin by asking students, by show of hand, how many have heard about
sensory processing or sensory processing disorders. Let students share what
they know.
 Go over the lesson objectives, located on the second slide of the PowerPoint
 Go over outline of the lesson’s activities
 Have students complete the Adult Sensory Checklist to develop an awareness
of their own sensory preferences and share results with a neighbor

2. Lecture (20 minutes)

 PowerPoint will provide a brief overview of sensory processing as a construct
o Individual sensory systems will be discussed
o Impacts of sensory processing dysfunction on occupational performance will
be discussed
o Video: A Child’s View of Sensory Processing

3. Active Learning Activity (20 minutes) *to be set up at back of classroom prior to
the start of class
 Set up four stations around the room representing four different sensory systems
(proprioception, vestibular, taste, auditory). Set up includes setting out the printout
describing the activity for that station as well as the supplies needed for that station.
 Instruct students to get into groups of 3-4 and rotate through stations. Only 1-2
groups at each station at a time
 Students will have 5 minutes at each station

4. Five-minute break (5 minutes)

5. Discussion (10 minutes)

 Discuss active learning activity as a group. Examples of discussion questions could
include:
o What did you learn from this activity?
o Did you find yourself really enjoying or really being bothered by any of the
sensory experiences at the stations? Share about that.
o How do you see difficulties in sensory processing impacting day-to-day life?

6. Case Study (20 minutes)

 Have students work in pairs to complete case study. The case study presents a
school-age child with sensory processing dysfunction as well as a description of the
child’s daily routine and occupations that he needs/likes to participate in. The
students will need to consider how his sensory processing dysfunction may impact
his daily occupational performance. Have students turn this into you at the end of
class.

7. Wrap-up (5 minutes)
 Bring the slide with lesson objectives back up and review what was learned
 Encourage students to consider all of the different sensory systems that are involved
in their daily tasks throughout the week
 Share that the next lesson will focus on interventions for sensory processing
disorders and give a reminder about the readings/assignments associated with that
lesson
