light and ecology
Webster's Seventh New Collegiate Dictionary delines ecology
as "the totality or pattern of relations between organisms and
their environment."
Man (the organism) has been the victim of considerable abuse
from water pollution, air pollution and other forms of pollution
which directly affect the biologic process. In addition, man
has been adversely affected, from a sociological viewpoint,
by such factors as excessive population density, high noise
levels and visual pollution.
Outdoor lighting has become a major source ol visual pollu-
tion by reason of ugliness and glare. During the day, most
lighting equipment has no aesthetic relationship to its sur-
rounding architecture or landscape, which tends to destroy
the effect that the designer tries to achieve. At night, most

erty boundaries, while retaining excellent levels of illumination

concept /teatures
The elficiency of a lighting lixlure is fasl
scale versus directly proportional to the size ol its
efficiency reflector. As the relleclor gets smaller, insl
the elliciency decreases sharply. This is
why Kim designers have carefully scaled low
this lixture to look properly proportioned mai
at its lowest mounting height of 12 feet,
while retaining optimum efficiency by not
sacrificing rellector design. lt is the most
ellicient luminaire of its type on the
market today.

Glare is the principle cause ol light

glare control pollution and results from imprecise
reflector design, the use of prismatic
lenses, and poor shielding ol the light
source above normal viewing angles.
Kim EKG luminaires have solved this
problem by recessing the lamP in a
precision hydrolormed rellector. The wal
result is a highly efficient luminaire thal
produces high levels ol illumination on
the ground while keeping a "low key"
prolile lhrough the elimination ol
high-angle glare.

The Asymelron Retlector is the newest

the and most exciting concept in reflector
Asymetron Reflector design in 20 years. lt is the most elficient
U.S. Patent No.3, 786, 248 and precise rellector ever designed to be
the sole optical control lor ANSI types
ll and lll distributions using modern high
intensity discharge lamps. lts success is
due to a unique geometry between lamp
and rellector which utilizes the
characteristic light distribution ol
discharge type lamps to the absolute fler
optimum. The reflector is precision
hydroformed in one piece, and has a ligt
specular Alzak@ linish. ,.....,.,.t

The tempered satety glass used in the

optional EKG series luminaires will withstand
Lexan@ shield most attempts at vandalism. Occasionally
installations may be in areas where
vandalism is known or anticipated to be
extremely high, and additional prolection
would prove more economical in the
long term period. A clear Lexan@ shield
can provide this protection as long as the
user understands its limitations.
CAUTION: The useful lile ol Lexan@ is
severely limited due lo yellowing caused
by UV from sunlight and mercury vapor
lamps.
Fixture and arm are self aligning and
fast can be installed on the pole with only a
installation socket wrench.
Rellector is hinged downward by
low cost releasing two quarter-turn laiches
maintenance allowing easy access to the ballasl
assembly and wiring.
Ballast and relaled componenls are
mounted as a self-contained
sub-assembly to a single mounting plate.
All components are pre-wired with quick
disconnect plugs. Ballast assembly can
be quickly disconnected and completely
removed lrom the lixture for servicing in
the shop. A replacement assembly can
be instantly inserted and connected lor
minimum interruption in service and
reduced maintenance time.

Wall mounting is an excellent way to

wall mounting achieve both aesthetic and security
lighting around buildings, while
eliminating the cost of poles. Wall
mounting the Kim EKG series fixlures is
an ideal application both photometrically
and aesthetically. lts Asymmetrical
distribution throws lighl away from the
building where it is needed, while its
handsome form blends with the
surrounding architeclure. NOT
