SENTENCE MAKER Teaching Notes Grammar Point: SIMPLE PRESENT: NEED; YES/NO QUESTIONS

Levels: Low Beginning to High Beginning For: Small Groups Preparation: 15 minutes Activity: 20 minutes Duplicate: 1 worksheet for each group

Objective

Using word cards, students will be able to create meaningful, accurate sentences and questions that use the target grammar structure and vocabulary.

Preparation

1. Duplicate one Sentence Maker worksheet for each group or make your own worksheets by choosing 18 words or phrases from the selected dictionary page. Students will use these words to make sentences and questions that practice the target grammar structure. Write the words on the grid. 2. Duplicate and cut apart one set of word cards for each group of four to six students. 3. Create ten large word cards to use in the model. Use the following words and punctuation: He / is / a / student / teacher / good / he / . / ?

Review the Vocabulary

On the board, write cloze sentences

based on the dictionary topic (e.g.The car

needs oil.

it need a new radio?).

Have students look at the selected dictionary page and use the vocabulary to

fill in the blanks.

Teach the Grammar Point:

Simple Present: Need; Yes/No Questions

Have students find the similarities in the cloze sentences. Point out that the similarities are examples of the target grammar structure. Elicit additional sentences that illustrate the target structure.

Introduce the Activity

Explain the goal: to use the word cards to make sentences and questions.

Model and Conduct the Activity

  • 1. Place the ten large word cards on the chalk-tray. Elicit and write on the board sentences and questions based on the word cards. Make mistakes as you write (e.g., in word order or capitalization), and have the class correct you.

  • 2. Put students into groups. Distribute one set of cards to each group. Have each group choose a recorder.

  • 3. Direct students to make one sentence or question with some of the cards, and have the recorder write it down on a separate sheet of paper. Check accuracy.

  • 4. Have groups continue making and recording sentences and questions. Monitor their work and give feedback on their accuracy. Set a ten-minute time limit, and then have groups report back on one or more of their sentences and questions.

For Multilevel Classes

Group higher- and lower-level students together. Have a higher-level student be the recorder, and have a lower-level student report back to the class.
