Plan of investigation

I’ve chosen the topic ‘Conflicted views on Modern Education in the

Caribbean’ because this issue will affect the country’s future progress. As
an English student, this SBA may help my data analysis skills, research skills
and critical thinking. This SBA requires me to collect three pieces of data,
share and discuss the material with my group, write three reflections and
create an informative presentation.
The pieces are: I just sued the school system- YouTube video
Modern education by DAWN- newspaper article
Modern Education: Pros and cons- online article

I expect to understand the intentions of modern education more and

understand how it affects students’ thinking and attitude toward
schoolwork.

Reflection 1: How the materials shaped my thinking on the topic

Newspaper article
The article speaks about rapid worldwide development due to the
advancement of education. This was informative because it gives real life
examples of how education affects development. It tells me how quickly
Trinidad has developed, which can be seen in its educational advancement.

Internet website
The website shows that many positive effects, as well as negative ones, are
present in modern education. Values and knowledge that are worth
remembering are being forgotten. The modern educational system has
been designed to teach students to write what they read, not allowing
them to express new ideas. This shows that real values are being lost, as
well as creativity.

YouTube video
This video says that the many flaws present in the modern educational
system are affecting students negatively. Each student has a different way
of interpreting information. The educational system wants every student to
think the same way and be equally taught. This shows that the educational
system doesn’t cater for students with varying learning styles, not giving
them the same opportunities as students with learning styles taught by
teachers. This is deeply unfair to students who learn differently.

Reflection 2: The use of language in the data

Newspaper article
This was expository piece written in a serious tone. Formal and literal
language was used. The sentences were very straight forward, facilitating
the understanding and analysis of the subject reading the article. There
were a variety of concise, well constructive paragraphs. The data, over-all,
was well written.

The Internet website

The online article was based on facts, opinions and statements by
influential people from the past who have left their mark on history. This
was an expository piece, containing literal and figurative language. For
example, “we are being fed with facts and knowledge”. The passage was
written formally with various paragraphs emphasizing each point although
sentences were not complex and were easily understood by readers.

YouTube video
An argumentative piece was narrated in a vivid, satirical tone. The narrator
spoke in a serious tone, with formal, figurative and literal language.
Although lengthy, the poet used simple words. For example, “if you judge a
fish by its ability to climb a tree…” His use of personification helped me
understand and relate to the argument

Reflection 3: How this SBA process helped me become a better person

This S.B.A. topic was decided on by the group because it is something that
currently affects us as students. My peers helped me express my ideas and
feelings while writing my reflections. I also helped them by expressing my
own opinion on their collected material and written material.

Writing this S.B.A. has changed my mentality and helped me understand

others’ points of view. Now, I find myself being more tolerant of different
perspectives. This process improved my communication skills, making me
participate more in other classes and expressing my opinions, and my
listening skills.

I am glad that I learnt to adapt easily into my group and acquired new skills,
which I will need in the future for any working environment I may find
myself in. Skills such as confidence in my ability to research and interpret
information, forming inter-personal relationships and accepting
constructive criticism from my peers have learnt

Group written report

The topic that our group focused on was Modern Education. We this topic
because we are directly affected by it, since we are students and education
shapes our future and the lives of individuals worldwide. Although there
was an abundant amount of information available there was a difficulty
finding relevant data. However, one each person acquired her sources we
collaborated and gave constructive criticism based on these pieces.
We agreed on three main pieces. The first was an interview with
activist Malala Yousefzai, who had almost lost her life in her quest for
education. The interview further discussed the restrictions and challenges
that women are met with when trying to work with the education system.
We realized how fortunate we are for obtaining an education without
having to fight for it.
The second piece was an article showing advantages and
disadvantages of same sex schools. For example it was found that same sex
school students tend to develop gender stereotypes that may hamper
interaction with the opposite sex. It was observed that this statement may
be true because we attend a same-sex school and can relate to this issue.
The final source was a newspaper article, on Modern Education. One
very important point talked about was that the development of a country
greatly depends on the effectiveness of the education system. All of this
information greatly impacted our views on the topic. This makes us
appreciate our country’s education system because of various
opportunities it provides; giving us a wider range of career choices and
helps further develop all fields.
Our group did not have many issues when working together. There
was great co-operation, deadlines were met in a timely fashion and
communication was effective and continuous. Although some group
members needed motivation and coaxing and it was hard to concentrate at
times, when the group made a concerted effort, work was accomplished.
Everyone in the group had the chance to develop leadership skills, practice
team building, learn how to conduct research and also how to edit and
refine data. Despite it being a long journey, we all agreed that this SBA
helped us to develop critical thinking skills and improve our skills in English
Language.

APPENDIX

Oral presentation

I will be presenting my piece in the form of a speech.

I acquired information from three pieces, a YouTube video and two online
articles.
My pieces were all very informative, written in serious but easy to
understand language. The writers seemed very passionate about the topic,
bringing up well-researched points

-How does this affect us?

We as students are directly affected by the way in which we are taught.
Have you thought about that? Our minds are shaped to think in a certain
way. We have been designed to answer questions with specific, given
words. Learning has become a regurgitation process in most cases.
Practicing for CSEC examinations using past papers is a perfect example.
Teachers remind us what words to use and how to phrase our thoughts.
This drains our creativity and understanding of the topic as we descend into
a monotonous pattern of words.

-What are we being taught?

We spend a great amount of time in a classroom learning to find the
equation of a circle, balancing molecular equations and calculating the
speed of a falling object, but do we learn how to use a knife and fork? Do
we learn to treat others with consideration? Being in school for seven
hours, if not more, should not only teach us mathematics, chemistry and
physics. A school should teach us to treat one another with mutual respect
and adapt to different environments, as well as enforce the moral values,
which should have been taught in our homes. As Albert Einstein once said,
Education is that which remains if someone had forgotten everything one
has learnt in school.

-Inequality in the classroom

Some teachers do not take into consideration all the different learning
styles present in a classroom. Many students may learn visually, others
verbally. There is n doubt that it is difficult for a teacher to give individual

attention to students. There are different ways to facilitate students’
understanding,
A massive advantage present in modern education is the advanced
technology at our disposal. Technology facilitates the teaching of various
learning styles as activities, audios and videos are readily available.
Teachers should exploit this resource, which is relatively new in schools.
If teachers do not take different approaches to teaching, student may be
left behind. As one of my pieces says, if you test a fish on its ability to climb
a tree, it will spend its entire life thinking it is dumb.
This brings us to an important point. Modern education has spread more
ignorance than knowledge out of will. Some students do not know how or
why something is done the way it is, but because these questions are not in
the syllabus, they are not taught.
Yet we must be grateful for modern education, which teaches us enough
the survive in the evolving world

Participation measure

The objective of this measure is to reflect on and complete the first rating
of the individual participation measure.

Newspaper article
INFORMATION technology has completely transformed the lifestyle of the
people. A few decades ago, life moved at a snail’s pace, physically as well as
electronically. There is a complete change today.

Every bit of information and the whereabouts of men and material are at
one’s fingertips, and human activities are no longer confined to or
dependent on physical infrastructure.

Education and development are interdependent. A common observation is

that those countries that have experienced accelerated development have
done so by modernising and facilitating meaningful education for their
people.

Education in South Asia is still progressing at a slow pace and has failed to
attain the quality and quantity that could infuse youth to bring change in
the country. Development is, therefore, at a standstill.

Education is a pre-requisite for development. Primary education in the

country has never been taken seriously, and restricted to knowing of
addition, multiplication, division. On the contrary, the primary school
children of advanced countries become skillful in handling computers and
other modern communication tools dexterously. Thus, when they qualify
for their basic school certificates, they are confident about tackling the
profession of their choice with ease.

To give the desired results, new techniques and solutions vis-à-vis eduction
need to be introduced in Pakistan.

Internet website
Education is the imparting and acquiring of knowledge through teaching
and learning, especially at a school or similar institution. The earliest
educational processes involved sharing information about gathering food
and providing shelter; making weapons and other tools; learning language;
and acquiring the values, behaviour, and religious rites or practices of a
given culture. Before the invention of reading and writing, people lived in
an environment in which they struggled to survive against natural forces,
animals, and other humans. To survive, preliterate people developed skills
that grew into cultural and educational patterns.
Education developed from the human struggle for survival and
enlightenment. It may be formal or informal. Informal education refers to
the general social process by which human beings acquire the knowledge
and skills needed to function in their culture. Formal education refers to the
process by which teachers instruct students in courses of study within
institutions.

Talking of the modern day education, one feels proud; of saying yes I am an
educated person. Formally or informally all of us are educated. Education is
the equipping with knowledge. The overall development of mind, body and
soul is the real education.

Carter G. Woodson once said “For me, education means to inspire people
to live more abundantly, to learn to begin with life as they find it and make
it better.”

THE PRO’S

Modern day education is aided with a variety of technology, computers,

projectors, internet, and many more. Diverse knowledge is being spread
among the people. Everything that can be simplified has been made
simpler. Science has explored every aspect of life. There is much to learn
and more to assimilate. Internet provides abysmal knowledge. There is no
end to it. One can learn everything he wishes to. Every topic has developed
into a subject.

New inventions and discoveries have revealed the unknown world to us
more variedly. Once a new aspect is discovered, hundreds of heads start
babbling over it, and you get a dogma from hearsay. Not only our planet
but the whole universe has become accessible.

Now we have good and learned teachers to impart us with knowledge of

what they know. Every one is a master in his field. We and our children are
getting taught by professionals of their field. Presently our education is
based on making us the best in our area of interest, to help us reach our
goals more easily. More of the fact based knowledge is being grasped by us.
What we learn helps us in our career and in our profession. Professionalism
is deep-rooted in our society now and this education makes us so.

Skill-development and vocational education has added a new feather to the

modern system of education. There is something to learn for everyone.
Even an infant these days goes to a kindergarten. And a little grown,
mentally and physically is promoted to a Montessori. Everything is being
categorized, be it a primary, middle, a higher secondary or graduate school.
We have temples of education known by a familiar word the “university”.

Whatsoever we are getting educated day by day and what’s good about is
that it’s a never-ending process.

Rightly said by Aristotle, “Education is an ornament in prosperity and a

refugee in adversity.” is what everybody feels now.

THE CON’S

Well, that was the positive side, but every story has two telling. Of all the
virtue, our education system has developed into mere schooling now. New
trends are being developed which are far more a baloney that boon.

Albert Einstein once said “Education is that which remains, if one has
forgotten everything one learned in school.”

Firstly our education is confined to schools and colleges. It has become a

process of spoon feeding. “Spoon feeding in the long run teaches us

nothing but the shape of the spoon” were the words of E.M.Forster. We
are being fed with facts and knowledge. Not art, not books, but life itself is
the true basis of teaching and learning. Cramming of facts and dates, hi-fi
mathematical formulas, theories and doctrines should be at college levels
when one has chosen his area of interest. What will the history pay a
doctor or a mathematician, or medical terms to a historian?

Secondly, an art can only be learned from a workshop of those who are
earning their bread from it. Modern education has spread more ignorance
than knowledge. Most of the women even don’t know, where, the fabric
they are wearing, came from. The word “How” is missing in our world
which causes ignorance.

“Education…has produced a vast population able to read but unable to

distinguish what is worth reading.” says G. M. Trevelyan.

Thirdly all education is bad which is not self-education. Presently, children

after school are sent to tuitions. This is a clear question mark on the ability
of school teacher. Homework tutorials are mushrooming up in our society.
Students are thought of like they can’t do anything on their own and so are
sent even to do the homework. Our schoolings got a lot of loop-holes. They
guide us through a well catered pathway which finally leads to
professionalism. Homework is a waste of time, if it is to repeat class work
done today or to be repeated as class work to be done tomorrow.

Our schooling does not leave us with time to get educated. Mark
Twain once said that” I have never let my schooling interfere with my
education”. Our child’s normal routine has become to wake up early, brush
up their minds with light reading, go to school, then go to tuition and finally
come home and do the homework.

Finally our education is producing machines out of pupil. They read books,
they speak books and they do books. Discussing in class lead to
complications, which remains as confusions for a life time if left
untreated. Vladimir Nabokov, a U.S critic, poet and novelist says
“Discussion in class, which means letting twenty young blockheads and two

cocky neurotics discuss something that neither their teacher nor they
know.”

So, it’s a matter of debate that our education system is fallacious or fair.
