Key Question : Can Mung Beans germinate with or
without sunlight ?

Background research : Mung Beans

 Purpose of studying Mung Beans - To study
the effect of sunlight on the germination of Mung
Beans seeds
 Information about Mung Beans
 They are germinated by leaving them in water for
four hours of daytime light and spending the rest
of the day in the dark.
 Nutrients : Mung Beans have high manganese ,
potassium, magnesium, folate , copper, zinc and
various B vitamins. They are also a very filling
food, high in protein, resistant starch and
dietary fiber.
Hypothesis : Mung Bean seeds need sunlight for their
germination.

Variables : Independent variable

The Experiment group : The dark tray

The Control group : The light tray

Materials :
1. 30 mung bean seeds
2. two plastic tray
3. two piles of cotton wool or tissue
4. a 5 ml plastic syringe
5. tap water

Procedure :
1. Bring two plastic trays and put the same
amount of cotton wool or tissue into the
bottom of them. Label one tray as the light
tray and the other as the dark tray.
2. Lay the mung bean seeds in three lines, 5
seeds each line, into both trays.
3. Water daily both of them with 3 ml of
water to each tray by using the plastic
syringe for 5 consecutive day.
4. Put the light tray in a place where it gets
sunlight and put the dark tray the same
place but cover it with a box. Make sure
the dark tray does not get sunlight. Beware
of birds stealing the seeds!
5. Observe and take pictures daily for 5 days.
6. Analyse your data and conclude your
experiment.
7. Prepare a power point and a paper report.
