Nokia AirScale Radio Access

Future-proof your network, prepare for 5G

Executive Summary

Changing the way networks are built
The pace of development in telecoms has always been fast and it’s accelerating. The so-called
“gigabit experience” is a good example. High-end smartphones that can support gigabit speeds
are already being sold and the race to be among the first operators to offer 1 Gbps downlink
data rates (ten times higher than initial LTE data rates) has begun.

Operators face a choice of technology roadmaps to help them take advantage of current trends
like this, as well as future opportunities arising from 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT). Yet
today’s investments must also assure that the radio network is future-proof, ready for the
coming demands, however and whenever they arrive. By investing wisely now, operators can
minimize their future CAPEX, target zero emissions to boost profitability and maximize the value
of both their licensed and unlicensed spectrum.

Nokia AirScale Radio Access achieves all this and more by running all technologies in the same
radio access, offering huge capacity scaling and market-leading latency and connectivity. This is
an entirely new way to build radio access networks, supporting any network architecture to help
solve the transformation challenges operators face.

The components of a ground-breaking solution

Nokia AirScale Radio Access is a complete radio access solution that helps operators to address
the increasing demands of today and tomorrow.

• Nokia AirScale Base Station comprising single, dual and triple band radio units; and indoor
and outdoor system modules
• Nokia AirScale Active Antennas:
o Nokia AirScale Compact Active Antennas for easy deployment on crowded
antenna sites as either capacity extensions or coverage fixes.
o Nokia AirScale massive MIMO Adaptive Antennas improve spectral efficiency and
throughput capacity, ready to support 5G and the gigabit experience
• Cloud RAN with Nokia AirScale Cloud Base Station Server and the Nokia AirScale RNC
(cloud-based controller for 3G) running on Nokia AirFrame data center infrastructure
• Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi, including Wi-Fi access points and Nokia AirScale Wi-Fi Controller
running on Nokia AirFrame data center hardware
• Common software across 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G radio access technologies
• Services that use intelligent analytics and extreme automation to maximize the
performance of hybrid networks
• Nokia Zero Emissions solution enables radio networks to run with zero carbon emissions,
reducing OPEX and supporting environmentally-friendly operations.
Any radio, any location, any capacity
Multi-Standard, multi-band Nokia AirScale radio units use innovative super wideband and
multiband technology to combine up to three bands in a single unit. The same radio platform
offers versatile installation for the leanest site solution.

Nokia AirScale Radio Access will simultaneously support all radio technologies in the same base
station – 5G, 4.5G Pro/4.9G, 3G and 2G. Wi-Fi is integrated into the same radio access, while
multi-connectivity will allow connection to multiple radio technologies (LTE, Wi-Fi, 5G),
simplifying deployment and enabling capacity load-balancing across layers for a seamless flow of
data.

Chaining system modules expands baseband processing capacity and connectivity to meet the
needs of 5G speeds and massive IoT connectivity. Additional scaling can be achieved with Cloud
RAN, eliminating the need to over-dimension a local Distributed RAN site.

High performance in the cloud and at the edge

AirScale Radio Access supports Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) on the same servers as
Cloud RAN. This opens up APIs to a world of new applications, services, plug-ins integrated into
the RAN and which can at the same time take advantage of information from real radio
conditions.

The Cloud RAN provides agility and enables Internet-like continuous software delivery,
benefiting from powerful Nokia AirFrame data center hardware that meets stringent radio
access capacity and latency requirements.

Furthermore, Nokia’s future-proof management solution offers fully automated and complete
control for both legacy radio access networks and Cloud RAN, as well as offering easy
transformation to virtualization.

Easy to install, low cost to run

Nokia Airscale sites can be deployed using stand alone or integrated antennas and with any
available transport, making site selection easier and installation simpler.

Energy cost is another vital consideration. AirScale Radio Access power consumption is about 60
percent lower than Nokia’s previous market-leading base station generation thanks to advanced
features such as minimizing consumption in the absence of traffic, or to -turnoff network layers
experiencing low traffic.

With Nokia AirScale Radio Access, operators have the flexible, high capacity, future proof and
highly energy efficient network solution they need to meet the challenges they face.
