EBB6245 CORPORATE TRAINING

GUIDELINES

FACULTY OF ECONOMICS AND BUSINESS

PART I: GENERAL

1.1 Introduction

Corporate Master in Business and Administration (CMBA) is a full-time


programme offers by Faculty of Economics and Business, Universiti Malaysia
Sarawak. Apart from taking the compulsory and electives taught courses, to
complete the requirement of this programme, students must choose either to
take Corporate Business Project 1 & 2 (EBB 6502 & EBB 6513), or Corporate
Training (EBB 6245) at the final stage of this programme.

1.6 Objectives

The objectives of Corporate Training include the following:


 To establish and strengthen the university-industrial linkage.
 To enhance students’ experience with corporate world.
 To apply knowledge and skills acquired in CMBA programme in problem-
solving and decision-making in the corporate sector.

1.7 Period

Student must undergo at least TEN (10) weeks of Corporate Training period.
Note that:

(i) the earliest a student may register for Corporate Training is fourth
semester;

(ii) this course has to be registered in the long semester, in which the
duration is more than 10 weeks.

(iii) the course must be completed within the semester it is registered.

1.8 Procedures

Before commencing the Corporate Training, students should first:

(i) have completed three semesters’ courses;

(ii) write in, at your own discretion, to the management of any company
(preferable corporation, or established firms) in Malaysia or abroad for
permission to undergo Corporate Training;

(iii) inform the Faculty of Economics and Business by filling up Corporate


Training Acknowledgement Form;

 complete and submit the Corporate Training Acknowledgement


Form, together with the company approval letter to the CMBA
administration staff at the general office of Faculty of Economics
and Business.
 this should be done before the student starts the training.

(iv) register for EBB6245 Corporate Training course during course


registration period;

(v) attach to the company to undergo corporate training;

(vi) write a Corporate Training Report and hand in the report to the CMBA
administration staff at the general office of the Faculty of Economics
and Business before the deadline of submission announced by the
faculty;

 Failing to do so, he or she will obtain grade F (Fail) for this


course.

1.9 Corporate Supervisor

The student needs to be supervised by a Corporate Supervisor in the work


place. The student needs to inform the faculty on the name, job position and
contact number of his/her Corporate Supervisor appointed by the company.

1.10 Academic Supervisor

The faculty will appoint an Academic Supervisor to each student to in site-


visiting, guiding and overseeing the student, and assessment the student
performance, and etc.

1.11 Assessment

There are four components of assessment: Corporate Training Performance,


Weekly Report, Site-Visit or Interview, and Corporate Training Report. The
mark weightage distribution is tabulated below:

Corporate Trainee Performance will be evaluated by Corporate Supervisor,


while weekly report will be assessed by both Corporate and Academic
Supervisors and their average mark will be taken as student’s score in this
component. During the course of training, Academic Supervisor will conduct
site-visit/interview to evaluate the performance of student. Corporate
Training Report will take the average of the marks given by Academic
Supervisor from the faculty.

PART II: FORMAT OF THE CORPORATE TRAINING REPORT

2.1 Language and Units

(i) The thesis must be written in British or American English, but not a
mixture of both.

(ii) All units of measurement must be in the metric system.

2.2 Typing

(i) Font. Either Times New Roman (font size 12) or Century Schoolbook
(font size 11)

(ii) Spacing. The thesis should by typed on one side of the page. The text
should be double-spaced throughout, including explanatory footnotes,
long quotations, appendices, headings and subheadings. However,
legends, captions or keys to tables, figures, or plates should be single-
spaced.

(iii) Type Quality. Both copies of the thesis submitted for examination or
binding must be printed using a laser printer Margins. The top and
bottom margins of all pages should be 3 cm wide, with the right and
left-hand page margin should be 2.5cm wide.

2.3 Pagination

(i) Pages should be numbered consecutively throughout the thesis,


including pages of figures, tables and appendices. It is advisable that all
tables and figures are placed on separate pages and not together with
the text. Pagination begins with the first page of Chapter 1. Preliminary
pages (i.e. those preceding Chapter 1) must carry page numbers in
small Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, etc.). The title page should not be
numbered.

(ii) Page numbers should be centered at the bottom of the page and should
be at least 10 mm from the margin of the page. Page numbers should
appear by themselves and are not to be enclosed in parentheses,
hyphens, etc. Each appendix should be identified separately in
alphabetical order. The pages of the appendices should also be typed
according to the above pagination system.

(iii) Type Quality. Both copies of the thesis submitted for examination or
binding must be printed using a laser printer.

2.4 Margins

The top and bottom margins of all pages should be 3 cm wide, with the right
and left-hand page margin should be 2.5cm wide.

2.5 Paper

White, good-quality A4 paper (80gm) should be used for all submitted copies
of the thesis. Photographic illustrations should be colour-printed on good
quality high-resolution paper.

2.6 Organization

Students should provide a well-organized and well-written thesis. The


following ordered list of thesis sections serves as a guide.

(i) Title Page. The thesis title should be as concise as possible, giving an
accurate description of the thesis. The standard format of the title must
be in title case.

(ii) Copyright (optional). Under International Law the use of copyright


material requires the permission of either the author or the publisher.
It is the responsibility of the student to address this issue and cover any
expenses incurred.

(iii) Declaration. This page contains the student declaration and the
Academic Supervisor’s confirmation that the report is the student’s
own work.

(iv) Dedication (optional). The author may wish to dedicate his/her work
to the relevant person(s) tantamount to his/her success in obtaining
his/her degree.

(v) Acknowledgements/Preface. Most theses will include a brief statement


of gratitude in recognition of special assistance (including financial)
and guidance given by individuals, institutions or government bodies.

(vi) Abstract. Abstracts in both Bahasa Malaysia and English are


mandatory. The abstract is a summary of the entire thesis. It should
briefly outline the research problems addressed by the thesis, the
findings, and the significance of the work in the context of the field of
study. The abstract should not exceed two (2) typewritten double-
spaced pages of text consistent with the font style and size used in the
main body of the thesis. The font style of the translated abstract should
be in Italics.

(vii) Table of Contents. The titles of sections, chapters and their principal
subdivisions along with the page numbers on which they appear should
be listed in the Table of Contents. Titles should be worded exactly as
they appear in the text of the thesis. Theses with many subsections
should use a hierarchical numbering system for headings and sub-
headings (e.g. 3.0, 3.1, 3.2 etc.). Such numbering system combined with
the judicious use of upper and lower case, indentations and italics
should indicate clear relationships between the sections of the thesis.

(viii) Lists of Tables, Figures, Illustrations, Plates and Photographs. These


lists consist of the exact titles (including numbering) of all tables,
figures and plates that appear in the thesis. All tables, figures and plates
should be numbered consecutively throughout the text.

(ix) List of Abbreviations, Symbols, Specialized Nomenclature. This list is


optional, depending on the subject of the thesis. All scientific symbols
and nomenclature should follow the standard SI-system.

(x) Main text of the thesis. The main body of the thesis is usually arranged
into consecutively numbered chapters or sections. The internal
organization of the thesis is the responsibility of the student in
consultation with his/her thesis supervisor(s). The organization will
partly depend on the field of study, but the onus is on the student to
provide a systematic and well-organized thesis. Overall, the font of the
main text should be font 12 with double-spacing. The thesis will often
include the following chapters:

Chapter 1: Introduction

This chapter introduces the company by giving background of company


such as organization/company name, the vision, mission, objective,
organization chart, corporate governance, capital structure, nature of
business, business policy, corporate strategy, products and services,
profit and loss of the company, corporate social responsibility,
branding, marketing and promotion activities, etc.

Chapter 2: Review of Activities/Tasks

Provide a review of activities during Corporate Training period based


on weekly reports or projects or assignments performed, the
lessons/industrial/practical knowledge learned, and suggestion for
improvement in operational functions. Describe how you apply some
of the knowledge and skills you acquired in the CMBA programme
during your training. Explain your contribution to the company.

Chapter 3: Analysis and Findings

Conduct the Michael Portal’s Five Forces analysis to understand how


(a) entry, (b) power of input suppliers, (c) power of buyers, (d) industry
rivalry and (e) substitutes and complements affect the profitability of
company in the industry.

Next, conduct a SWOT analysis to understanding Strengths and


Weaknesses of the company, and identifying both the Opportunities
open to the company and the Threats it faces.

Chapter 4: Conclusion and Recommendations

Summary of overall experience and learning obtained during the


Corporate Training period. Present the major findings drawn from the
Five Forces and SWOT analyses. Provide and explain in detail few
suggestions or recommendations for managerial decision, which you
think can improve or strengthen the company’s performance. Highlight
your contribution to the company.

(xi) Literature Citation and Referencing. UNIMAS follows either the


Harvard or the APA System for literature citation and referencing.

(xii) Appendices.

2.7 Number of Pages

The number of pages of the Final Report must be at least 40 pages and not more
than 60 pages (not including Appendices).

2.8 Submission of Ring-bound Copies for Examination

The student must prepare one (1) ring-bound copy of the Corporate Training
Report for examination. The report will be examined and signed by the
student’s Academic Supervisor from the faculty. The hardcopy of the report
must be submitted to the CMBA administration staff at the general office of the
Faculty of Economics and Business before the deadline of submission
announced by the faculty.

2.9 Submission of Hard Copy for Graduation

The student who obtain Grade A only must submit TWO (2) hard copies of
the Corporate Training Report to the faculty’s general office before graduation.

The student must also prepare TWO (2) softcopy of the report (pdf version)
in CD. This CD should be submitted together with the hard copies.

PART III: INSTRUCTION TO STUDENTS

3.1 You are required to report yourself to the officer at your Corporate Training
placement company.

3.2 When reporting for duty and undergoing your Corporate Training, you are
required to always dress neatly.

3.3 It is your responsibility to comply with the requirements and policies of the
company.

3.4 You are required to understand and fully adhere to the rules of the company.

3.5 Always comply with established business/office hours when arriving at or


departing from the workplace.

3.6 You must perform your duties, whether you are instructed to do so or otherwise,
with enthusiasm, diligence and sincerity.

3.7 If you face problems, please discuss them with your Corporate Supervisor. As a
last resort, you may contact your Academic Supervisor.

3.8 When given a task, you must perform it within the least time period, ensuring that
the said task is performed in accordance to the requirements and standard of the
company.

3.9 You must be courteous, polite and willing to work. Do not be afraid to ask when
you are in doubt.

3.10 You are required to submit the Corporate Supervisor Assessment Form to the
Corporate Supervisor when reporting for duty. It is the responsibility of the
student to explain to the Corporate Supervisor that he/she needs to post the form
to the CMBA Administration Staff for purposes of grading as soon as the Corporate
Training period has ended. This report is confidential and you are not allowed to
view it.

3.11 You must be ready to meet with your Academic Supervisor when he/she visits
you at your workplace, and be able to explain to him/her the training that you are
undergoing.

3.12 You are reminded that as a student of this University, you reflect the image of
Universiti Malaysia Sarawak. With that, be aware of your conduct and maintain
the good name of the Faculty and University.

PART IV: RULES AND REGULATIONS GOVERNING UNIMAS STUDENTS TRAINING
SCHEME (CORPORATE TRAINING)

By registering yourself for EBB6245 Corporate Training course, you had agreed to be
bonded by each and all of following rules and regulations effective on the date of
course registration:

1. Student must devote their full time, attention, effort and abilities to the
Corporate Training.

2. Student must adhere to the work ethics of the organization to which they are
attached, obey the instructions of their Corporate Training supervisors at
UNIMAS and co-operate with other supervisors appointed by the
organizations to which they are attached.

3. Student is required to be present at all time whether during business hours or


normal working hours unless they are unable to do so due to sickness,
accidents or reasons beyond their control. However, they are required before
hand to inform in writing of their absence to the supervisor of the organization
to which they are attached.

4. Student must report their weekly activities or summary of training received,


lesson learned, and etc. in the weekly report using the format as shown in
CMBA/CT/04. The report must be type-written at the end of the week for
endorsement by the Corporate Supervisor. At the end of the training period,
the original completed report is to be attached as Appendix II of the Corporate
Training Report for checking and evaluation.

5. Student is prohibited from leaking or divulging any information pertaining to


the affairs of the organizations giving the training, matters related to their
businesses or clients and other information obtained during the time of
training or after completion of the training program.

6. Student must not intentionally damage or abuse properties/equipment
belonging to the organizations giving the training.

7. Student must at all time exempt and free UNIMAS and/or its employees
and/or its agents and/or the organizations providing the training from any
form of legal actions and/or claims for damages, loss and other liabilities
initiated by parties under statutory laws and common laws pertaining to the
student’s participation in the Corporate Training.

8. If at any time UNIMAS and/or its employees and/or agents is required to pay
and/or has paid for whatever costs, compensation expenses as a result of legal
actions against it, claims of damages and/or other forms of compensation
related to the students posting in the Corporate Training, the students
concerned must pay and bear all costs of claims for damages and
compensations inclusive of legal fees on a client/solicitor basis payable by
and/or have been paid by UNIMAS and/or its employees /or agents.

9. Student receiving any form of monetary payments from the organizations to


which they are attached must report such matter to their supervisors at
UNIMAS.

10. All students are insured under the Takaful Malaysia Insurance Scheme.
