PRACTICAL WORK

REMOTE CONTROL OF A SCOPE AND GENERATOR

I OBJECTIVE OF THE WORK :

The objectives of this practical work are the following ones:
 To use an oscilloscope with an embedded generator,

II GENERATION AND VISUALIZATION OF A SINUSOÏDAL SIGNAL

II.1 INTERNATIONAL-REMOTE-LABORATORY (INT-RE-LAB) PRESENTATION.
The network architecture of the INT-RE-LAB is described in the following Figure :

It is composed of 3 identical and redundant Remote LABoratory (RE-LAB) based on

3 identical local area networks (LAN) provided by each IT department of each host university:
Al-RE-LAB: Algerian Remote LAB located in the University of Abdelhamid Ibn
Badis of Mostaganem-Algeria

Fr-RE-LAB: located in the University of Limoges-France
Ma-RE-LAB: located in the University of Cadi Ayyad of Marrakech-Morroco
Tu-RE-LAB: located in the University of Kairouan-Tunisia

Remote students with a unique login and password provided by the French CAS server
can access indifferently the 3 remote LABs.
The process to connect the other 3 labs (Al-RE-LAB, Ma-RE-LAB, Tu-RE-LAB) will
be given within the moodle platform

II.2 FR-RE-LAB SERVER CONNEXION.

If you are using the network of the University of Limoges, you need to be connected
to the application server of this university.
To connect this server, you need firstly to add the CISCO anyconnect plugin to use a
specific VPN. The process to install this plugin is available on the website of the DSI of the
University of Limoges:

While you are connected to the VPN, you must :

1. . then connect to the available application server.

In the following, the practical work is described in the case of the use of the
application server win-phys.unilim.fr of the University of Limoges using a
remote desktop connection:

When you are connected to the application server, you must open your webbrowser
(ie or firefox or chrome) and connect to the moodle platform.
1. Connect from the application server the Update UP04 course on your platform.
Go to Week 1 – Practical Work. You will find the required information and the
different links to the different oscilloscopes.
2. A Big Blue Button (BBB) classroom is available on the platform in this Update
04 course. Connect you to the BBB classroom. This is mandatory ! because
you will need to know who is connected to the different oscilloscopes.

II.3 GENERATION AND VISUALIZATION OF A SINUSOIDAL SIGNAL.

If an oscilloscope (and its embedded generator) is free (ask the different students in
BBB classroom), click on the correct weblink of the moodle platform associated to the
oscilloscope you are going to use (dsox3014a1.xlim.fr, dsox3014a2.xlim.fr,
dsox3014a3.xlim.fr, dsox3014a4.xlim.fr, dsox3014a5.xlim.fr, dsox3014a6.xlim.fr).
The Output of the generator is directly connected to the channel 1 of the scope.

II.3.1 Generation of the sinusoidal signal
The manual of the scopes can be found in the moodle learning platform.
You will then configure the generator of the scope by choosing the waveform,
frequency, the amplitude, the output load (50 ohms). You choose your own values or the values
given by the teacher in charge of this practical work.
Reference: chapter 17 of Keysight InfiniiVision 3000 X-Series Oscilloscopes User's
Guide available on the moodle platform.

Make copies of the front panel of the oscilloscope when the configuration is made.
You can use the “screenshot tool” available in the accessory menu of the application server.

II.3.1 Measurements of the parameters of the generated sinusoidal signal

Click on Channel 1 in the remote front panel of the scope. Adjust all the parameters to
clearly visualize the generated signal (Amplitude (Voltage/division), Horizontal scale,
Coupling, Impedance (50 ohm), Waveform acquisition (Acq Mode Averaging),….
Make copies of the front panel of the oscilloscope to show your adjustments and the
configuration of your scope. You can use the “screenshot tool” available in the accessory menu
of the application server.
Use the “Meas” function to measure the frequency, the Peak-to-Peak value of the
generated signal.
Make copies of the front panel of the oscilloscope.
Is the magnitude equals the defined magnitude in the “Wave Gen” function?
What should you modify if the magnitudes are not the same? Explain theoretically the
phenomenon.
What is the influence of the value of the trigger? What is its utility?
