Good morning to Dr Mahendran, lecturer of General English Subject. My name is Siti Hazar
Jiman. I am taking a Primary School Education Programme in Science under the Faculty of
Education and Human Development at Sultan Idris Education University. Today I would like
to give a speech about the criteria of an ideal teacher.

According to Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, ideal is defined as the

best that something could be possibly be, a principle or perfect standard that you hope to
achieve. So ideal teacher means the best teacher could be possibly to be with a perfect
standard to achieve as an ideal teacher.

Aristotle has said “Those who educate children well are more to be honoured than
they who produce them; for these only gave them life, those arts of living well.” It means
teacher profession is an honoured, so the ideal teacher is adored by all the pupils.

In Malaysia, teacher is most important position in education field which is they have
to fulfil Malaysia aspirations. In challenges of 21st century, teachers have to be prepared with
multiple skills in order to be an ideal teacher. In my opinion, the indicator of ideal teachers
are regarding to their personality, communication, knowledge and teaching skills.

An ideal teacher has to be a very good personality of teacher. Teachers should be

competent in their personality especially in their appearance. Teachers in a good personality
and appearance will attract pupils to them and become the pupils’ idol. For example, sport
teacher has to wear the suitable attire while teaching sport. They need to be well-dressed
while teaching so pupils adore to the teachers. Teachers also have to be creative and
innovative personality in order to be an ideal teacher.

Communication is a second criteria of an ideal teacher. It means, teachers are able

to exchange the information and express their thoughts and feelings. They must have good
communication to the pupils, colleagues, school administration and parents. Ideal teachers
must be warm and friendly to all the peoples surround them. They also able to settle the
problems using their good communications. Besides that, ideal teachers are willing to give
their opinion about anything around them and very sensitive to pupils needs. Teachers also
have a sense of humour while communicate with their pupils. So that, pupils will not be able
bored to the teacher’s teaching.

Ideal teachers need to be knowledgeable which is they are dedicated in their

profession. In fact the role of knowledge presenter, they have to be prepared the wide
knowledge about the content of knowledge which they have to deliver to their pupils in
teaching and learning process. Nowadays, teachers have to prepare content of knowledge
out of the box and not depend on textbook randomly. It is because in era of globalisation
urge teachers to be knowledgeable so pupils will respect to the teachers. A knowledgeable
teacher become inspiration among pupils and automatically pupils interested to the lesson.

Good teaching skills also important criteria of an ideal teacher. As we know, all the
teachers in Malaysia has to attend a teaching course either in university or Teaching
Education Institution (IPG) for several years before to be a teacher. They are given multiple
teaching skills in pedagogical and psychological as teacher trainee before they come to
school in real situation as teacher. Ideal teachers have ability to apply various methods and
techniques of teaching and learning. They also can manage the classroom, doing
preparation for teaching, delivering content of the knowledge effectively and so on. Through
the good teaching skills, teachers are able to improve pupils’ performance and also pupils’
interest in learning. For example, teachers are able to prepare good teaching skills before
each teaching and learning processes, make the suitable teaching aids, provide the ICT aids
and deliver the attractive activities in the classroom.

For conclusion, an ideal teacher is not only best in teaching, but they have to be best
person in their personality, communication, knowledgeable and good in teaching skills.
William Arthur Ward said, “The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The
superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires.” So to be inspired by the pupils,
teacher has to be an ideal. Thank you.
