POCAHONTAS

CHAPTER 1

The story began with a native American “Mingan” from a tribe called Algoquin.

Pocahontas was born as Matoaka and was a sweet girl, the daughter of the tribe chief.
She was called Pocahontas which meant “playful one”
CHAPTER 2

One day big ships arrived to America from England to live in the “new world”They
built a town called Jamestown. They called the area Virgina. The natives didn’t
understand why a new name was given to this place. The English built a wall, houses
and a church. They tried to grow crops but they couldn’t. They wanted to find gold and
take it to England.
The native people taught them how to cultivate the soil. Some natives didn’t like the
English, except for Pocahontas.

CHAPTER 3
Pocahontas was the daughter of the chief of the tribe and everyone loved her. She was a
curious girl. One day a white man appeared near the village and the natives tied him to a
tree. He was John Smith and had kind eyes. The natives wanted to hurt him but
Pocahontas saved him.

CHAPTER 4
Pocahontas and the native people began to visit Jamestown more often. They began to
trade food, animals’ skin for jewelry and tools.
One day Pocahontas went to find John Smith but he wasn’t there. He went to England.
People didn’t know if he was alive or not. Pocahontas was very sad.
With time more and more people arrived to England with men, women, children and
animals like pigs, chickens, cows.

CHAPTER 5
Pocahontas saw a man with a big gun and he killed a deer.
The English men were taking the native’s lands and wanted more food. The people from
the tribe offered them food in exchanged of guns. But the English men didn’t give the
natives the gun.

CHAPTER 6
One night the native people took tools and guns from the white men and they put them
in prison in Jamestown.
Pocahontas’ father took some white men and kept them in the village. He ordered her
not to visit Jamestown again, they weren’t friends anymore.
But she went in secret to this village and made her a prisoner. The white men asked her
father to return the guns and the white men, but he only returned the white men, so
Pocahontas was still prisoner and got angry with her father.

CHAPTER 7
She was a prisoner for a year. A woman called Hanna gave food to her 3 times a day.
She also taught her English words and they became friends. Hannah brought her friends
to the house and they had tea together. A clergyman also visited Pocahontas and she
learnt about Christianity, and the clergyman about their religion and culture. She liked
“Love your neighbor like yourself”

CHAPTER 8
Pocahontas meet a tobacco farmer called John Rolfe and they fall in love. He asked
permission to marry Pocahontas because she was a not a prison. She became a Christian
and she was baptized with the name Rebecca. Two brothers came to the wedding and
her father sent her a necklace.

CHAPTER 9
They had a baby called Thomas and travelled to England so that English people could
see that natives were not dangerous.

CHAPTER 10
At the beginning it was hard for her to be in London because everything was grey, dirty
and cloudy but then she got used to it.

CHAPTER 11
She met a lot of people even the King and Queen. During a party she met John smith
again, but they were like strangers.

CHAPTER 12
After some time they decided to return to America. During the journey, she got ill. She
had smallpox. She was very ill and had to get off the boat. She died soon after at the age
of 20.

This story shows that people can be together, fall in love in spite of differences in
culture, religion or skin colour.
