ESLB2103 INTRODUCTION TO AUSTRONESIA LANGUAGE

GROUP PROJECT: THE AUSTRONESIA LANGUAGE – 45%

This project is to promote Austronesian Languages as Witnesses for cultural and Biological
Ancestry at the Population Level. The fact that so many people should speak related
Austronesian langugages is interesting, but does this linguistic fact illuminate the overall
cultural and biological origins and histories of these populations in any useful way?

1. Your task:
Work in pairs to research about any given Austronesia language and create a
presentation in a form of an exhibition which consists of:
 The people : feature, descriptions
 Origins : places, maps
 Culture : traditional costumes, food, education (formal/informal)
 Let’s try using the language: In this part, you are required to demonstrate the usage of
this language to your audiences. For example;
a. Greetings / welcoming / how to introduce yourself in Tagalog language?
b. Numbering, how to count in Malagasy language?
c. How to say I love you in Javanese language?
d. Other daily conversation sentences.

The languages to be chosen are:

 Buginese
 Ilocano
 Bunun
 Dusun
 Maori
 Sarawak Malay
 Fijians

2. You are also required to / create / show the food or costumes to be displayed during
the presentsation. You are expected to prepare a 15 minutes presentation on your
topic / language chosen.
3. This project will be due on week 11.
