How to Setup Video Channel
- FAR-28x5 not being connected to CH1 -
Following describes the procedure to setup the video channel on VDR/S-VDR with
software V2.05. Note that FAR-28x5 is NOT connected to CH1.
Preparation
1) Install Live Player V4 program on your PC. Two programs, Live Player V4 and VDR
Maintenance Viewer are installed on the PC. Live Player V4 can be installed onto Windows
XP and Vista. The software cannot be installed onto Windows 2000.
2) Setup the PC for network connection; IP address: 10.0.0.102; and Subnet mask:
255.0.0.0.
3) Connect the PC to the J14 in the DCU with an Ethernet CROSS cable.
4) Copy “equip.xml” onto the desktop of the PC. The next version will not require this
step.
1. Open Internet Explorer and go to Address, ftp://10.0.0.100/pub/.
2. Copy “equip.xml” file and paste it onto the desktop.
Setup procedure
1. Turn on the DCU and wait for about 3 minutes.
2. Run VDR Maintenance Viewer on the PC.
(Start > Program > VR-3000 > Maintenance Viewer)
3. Log in as “Serviceman.” (IP address: 10.0.0.100 and Password: nopassword)

IMPORTANT!
When system program is V2.05, leave the interlace type at the
factory default (Non-interlace) on CH1. Thus, FAR-28x5 is
connected to CH2 to CH4 while CH1 is set to inactive. If “Interlace” is
selected on CH1, no video signal is received on all channels after
pressing Set tab several times. The next version of VDR/S-VDR
software will remove this inconvenience.
If you set Interlace Type to “Interlace” on CH1 inadvertently, take following steps to
restore the system.
A1-6
10.4 Click Image Capture... to check that the radar video is receiving correctly.
Note: The current Maintenance Viewer shows the upper half image of FAR-28x5
as shown in Fig.7. But, the LivePlayer V4 displays the radar video correctly as
shown in Fig.8. Next software update solves this bug.
10.5 If necessary, change settings for fine adjustment. Typically, Phase and
Offset values need to be changed.
A1-7
10.6 If two or more radars are connected to VDR, select Radar save pattern, that
is, select the radar(s) to be recorded. Click Recording Mode... and select
the radar save pattern. If necessary, edit the table.
In the table, “I” indicates the data is recorded or sent, “N” not recorded, and “G”
that the radar is in a Group. If all radars in the group are turned on, R1 is recorded.
If R1 is turned off, R2 is recorded. The radar having the youngest radar number in
the group is recorded.
To record two radars, R1 and R2 onto the 9-GB DRU, change settings in
“Recording to DRU” column to R1: I; R2: I; R3: N; and R4: N. To change the
setting, move the cursor into the box and click.
Factory-default: Pattern 1
10.7 Click OK when the setting in the table is changed or X (Close) button.
10.8 Click Set tab. (Press Set tab after each channel setting.)
Download new settings (xml file) onto your PC and import the VDR/S-VDR.
1. After configure the VDR/S-VDR for new equipment (for example, Atlas radar model
XX), press Reflect equipment tab and new xml data is generated.
2. Select Maintenance menu > Equipment Management > Export. Your PC has the xml
file (new settings) now.
3. When you visit another ship, import the xml file from the desktop to the
VDR/S-VDR. The file includes not only radar settings, but also ones for other
equipment such as GPS and VHF.

9) Configuring LivePlayer V4
Unlike LivePlayer Pro (Basic language), the NMEA decorder of LiverPlayer V4 uses
C language. The decoder file for the ETL and PRC sentences are available on the
Technet. The instruction how to write a decoder program is not available yet.
The operator’s manual, -B for VR-3020 explains that the decoder uses Basic
language, but this is incorrect.
Table 2 lists the playback software names to be used for the different DCU software.
Table 2 LivePlayers
Table 3 shows how to identify the DCU software version without removing the CF
card from the slot. The V2.25 DCU displays the remaining memory areas in the
backup hard disk on the AP and the RAP.
Figs. 6 and 7 show the upper left corner of the startup display on the status
monitor connected to V1.xx and V2.xx DCU respectively. These appear during
loading of VDR program into the system.

Never use this board in the DRU.
D11 (SL44)
D12 (SL44)
2) Modified 24P0080-22
The diode, Vishay SL44 on the original two-port repeater is likely to go short
circuit when it is used in the DRU. Thus, D11 and D12 are changed from
SL44 to the high voltage and high temperature diode, D2FL20U-5063. The
serial number of DRU with this board is 01xxxx.

3) 24P0080-55
Circuit modification is made and some parts including diodes are changed to
ones having higher withstand voltage. The serial number of DRU with this
board is 02xxxx.
D12 (D2FL20U-5063)
The most likely cause for the DRU to be damaged is short-circuited diode, D12
(Vishay SL44) on the two-port repeater, 24P0080-22.
Following explains how to check the diode without removing it from the printed
circuit board by using a digital multimeter with diode-check function.
Necessary tool

V4 NMEA Decoder
Following describes how to program the NMEA decoder to show the received serial
data in the LivePlayer V4.
2. Arithmetic Operators
The following arithmetic operators are available.
x + y: Addition
x – y: Subtraction
x * y: Matrix multiplication
x / y: Right division
Example:
Data type A=x+y A = x -y A=x*y A=x/y
x Double 1.5 2.9 2.2 3.0
y Double 2.2 1.1 1.1 2.0
A Double 3.7 1.8 2.42 1.5
Integer 3 1 2 1
3. Comparison Operators
Comparison operators compare numeric values for relationships such as equality.
A == B: A is equal to B.
A != B: A is not equal to B.
A <= B: A is less than or equal to B.
A >= B: A is greater than or equal to B.
A < B: A is less than B.
A > B: A is greater than B.
1/5
V4 NMEA Decoder
4. Character “#”
The character “#” specifies the field in the received NMEA sentence. For example,
when receiving data string, $GPZDA,190124.89,22,04,2008,00,00*65, #2 and #3
select the second and third fields respectively, that is, 190124.89 and 22. “,” in the
NMEA data string is the data field delimiter.
5. Basic Functions
5.1 print
The “print” function outputs a literal string. For example, if you write print (“ knt
Fwd”);, “ knt Fwd” is output. If you write two or more character strings, for example,
print (“A”, “B”);, the output is “AB.”
5.2 trend
The “trend” function outputs a numeric value. For example, if you write trend
(double (2));, double type data, 2.0 is output. If there is two or more “trend”
function, the last “trend” function overwrites the previous data.
Example:
With the above decoder text, the decoder outputs the character string, “22 04
2008” and the numeric values, “22.0” if the received sentence is
$GPZDA,190124.89,22,04,2008,00,00*65.
6. The if statement
The “if” statement is decision-making statement. In the simplest form, it looks like this:
If (condition) {
print (xxxx);
}
condition is an expression that controls what the rest of the statement will do. The
print (xxxx) is executed only if condition is true.
2/5
V4 NMEA Decoder
Any number of “if” clauses may appear. Each condition is tested in turn, and if one is
found to be true, the corresponding body is executed.
7. Advanced Functions
7.1 strcmp
The “strcmp” function compares two strings and returns zero if these are equal. If
these are not equal, other than 0 is returned. For example, strcmp (#4, A)
compares the fourth filed of the received sentence with A.
7.2 substr
The “substr” function extracts a section of a character string. The substr (A, X, Y)
extracts the characters between Xth+1 to Yth+1 of the character string A. X and Y
are a natural number including zero (0). For example, substr (A, 1, 4) extracts
BCDE if the character string A is ABCDEFGHIJ and strsub (A, 0, 0) A.
7.3 fmt
This function formats a numeric value.
Example:
<Decoder text>
double d = 123.0;
fmt ( “%5.3f” , d);
The format command, fmt (“%5.3f , d) changes the variable number “d” to the
number in three decimal place. The number right to the dot in “%5.3F” defines the
number of digits after decimal point. The number left to the dot defines the number
of digits of integral part.
In the above example, “double d= 123.0” defines “d” is the number of decimal
place and the initial value is 123.0. The decoder outputs this number in three
decimal place, or 123.000.
3/5
V4 NMEA Decoder
In the example below, “trend (double (2))” outputs 2.0 and the first print function 22 A
2008. The “if” clause is true, so “end” is printed and no following statement, “trend
(double (#3))” is executed.
Example:
<Decoder text>
Search for ZDA
trend (double (2));
print (#3," ", #4," ", #5);
if (strcmp (#4, “A”) == 0) {
print (“end”);
return;
}
trend (double(#3));
Result: The character string is 22 A 2008end and the numeric value is 2.0.
9. hexToDec
This function converts Hexadecimal value to Decimal number.
Example:
<Received sentence> 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, a, b, c
<Decoder text>
(1) print (hexToDec (#10));
(2) print (hexToDec (b));
Result: (1) The value in the 10th field “a” is converted to decimal number 10.
(2) The hex value “b” is converted to decimal number “11.”
10. decToHex
This function converts Decimal number to Hexadecimal value.
4/5
V4 NMEA Decoder
<Received sentence>
$GPRMC,151032.15,A,0018.1,N,00056.8,W,1929.0,225.0,020408,0.0,E,A,*30
<Decoder text>
Search for RMC
if (strcmp (#13,"N")==0) {
print ( "GNSS failed");
return;
}
if (strcmp (#3,"A")!=0) {
print ( " !");
}
print ( substr (#2,0,1),":", substr (#2,2,3),":", substr (#2,4,5));
if (strcmp (#3,"A")!=0) {
print ( " GNSS warning");
}
trend (double ( #9));
As the first “if” clause is not true (the thirteenth field of GPRMC sentence is not N, but
A), the next “if” clause is executed. The second “if” clause is not true because the third
field is A. The print statement in the middle of the text is executed: substr (#2,0,1)
outputs 15, substr (#2,2,3) 10, and substr (#2,4,5) 32. The third “if” clause is not true
and the next statement, trend (double ( #9)); is executed.

Schematic Diagrams
There are two types of devices used to record voyage data: the VDR and the Simplified Voyage
Data Recorder (S-VDR). Compared to the VDR, the S-VDR has more flexibility in data input
requirements. See Table 1.1.
Both the VDR and the S-VDR must be connected to the ship’s emergency source of electrical
power to ensure the data-recording process is not interrupted by a loss of power. In the event of
a failure to the ship’s source of emergency power, both systems continue to record the bridge
audio using built-in batteries, or reserve source of power for two hours.
Our VDR, VR-3000 is comprised of Data Collecting Unit, Data Recording Unit (Protective
capsule), Remote Junction Box, and Bridge Microphone while the S-VDR, VR-3000S is
comprised of Data Collecting Unit, Data Recording Unit, and Bridge Microphone. See Fig.1.1
on the next page.

DRU: 12 hours to 13 hours depending on the number of sensor connected. 6-GB DRU
is required for single radar connection and 9-GB DRU for two radar connections.
HDD: 48 hours regardless of the number of connected radar
Ten memory buffers numbered 0 through 9 are used for data writing and reading in the DCU. The
input signal is written onto one of the buffers every 15 seconds and the data is transferred from
the buffer to both the DRU and HDD via IEEE1394 every 15 seconds.
The data transferred to the memory device is numbered, called “Record number” which increases
every 15 seconds. The buffer in use and the record number are displayed on the Status monitor

The unit has two identical circuits called channel 1 and channel 2. The attenuators, DS1 for
channel 1 and DS3 for channel 2 adjust audio level of microphone line. Each digit of the DIP
switch attenuates the signal by 10 dB, 20 dB, 30 dB, and 40 dB from left. The factory-default
is 10 dB for all Furuno VHF. The output signal from channels 1 and 2 is mixed with the jumper
wire, JP1 removed.

The audio level of the speaker line is
attenuated by 10 dB when #1 of DS2
(channel 1) and DS4 (channel 2) are set to
ON. The DIP switch, #2 of DS2 and DS4
selects either connection of VHF or bridge
microphone.

At least, Horizontal and Vertical resolutions and Sync type are necessary. Other data can be
calculated or decided as below. If no framegrabber frontend data is displayed in Video Channel
monitor, no signal is input to the VDR/S-VDR in most case. Check the connection and the
signal level. Sometimes, the sync signal level is low and a buffer unit such as RGB buffer
available in a PC shop or Furuno 03P9039 board is required. The sync signal level is 2 V or
more.

Type: Z-252
C/N: 000-152-206
Symptom 3) 082 on RAP, 084 on AP, and LED on HDD not blinking
Cause: The operating system does not run.
Remedy: Connect a SXGA monitor. If nothing appears on the monitor, replace CPU board. If the
VDR/S-VDR records data normally, check the connection between CPU board and TB
board. Probably, the CPU board does not receive the signal from AP/RAP via TB
board.
Remedy: a) Connect a monitor and check that the system boots up normally.
b) Use crossed LAN cable or another crossed cable.
c) Ensure that IP address of your PC is 10.0.0.102.
d) Ensure that Pop-up blocker is not ON.
e) Ensure that Proxy server is set to OFF.
(Tools > Internet Options > Connections tab > LAN Settings, and then make sure
the "automatically detect proxy settings" and "use a proxy automatic
configuration script" options are not checked.)

Remedy: Reverse the polarity of the Hs and Vs signal. (0: positive; 1: negative)
Symptom 14) When FR-21x5 series radar is connected, video level becomes low.
Remedy: Remove R20, R21, and R22 from the RGB board.
Cause: The system time is reset to the default time due to low voltage of BIOS battery.
Remedy: Replace the BIOS battery and set the system time through BIOS menu.
106
Chapter 6 Troubleshooting
Remedy: Use LivePlayer Pro of version number V03.20 or above. The earlier version of LivePlayer
Pro does not support this feature.
6.5 Q&A
Q1: Is GPS connected to the VDR/S-VDR as a speed sensor?
A1: Ask your class society. Some class societies (for example, ABS) allow to connect the satellite
navigation system to the VDR/S-VDR to receive Speed over ground.
Q5: Is it normal that TB3 is 0 V when the system is operating from the built-in batteries?
A5: Yes, it is normal. It is not necessary to record analog, digital, and serial data with the built-in
batteries. Requested is recording bridge audio data.
