Chapter I

Introduction

Background of the Study

A lot of teenagers nowadays are unaware of being

physically fit. Some aren’t of those health conditions that

they may get if they will only be contented and unaware of

those foods they eat because nowadays a lot of what is

happening inside of their body if they eat unhealthy foods.

Students of JOHN B LACSON AREVALO Have their

Physical Education. It is therefore expected that they are

already familiar with the fundamentals of the subject.

However, this is not the problem. Most of the time,

students are taking the subject just to have good grades or

they are obliged to. Thus, students don’t take the lessons

seriously and also they don’t give importance and instill

the lessons to themselves and latter apply those in the

real world.

Data from a 2003-2004 report from the National

Health and Nutritional Examination (NHANES) estimates that

17% of children and adolescents are obese, or are in the

95th percentile for weight (Centers for Disease, 2003).

Between 1980 and 2002, the obesity rate among adults

2
doubled and the rate among children tripled. The prevalence

of obesity and overweight in almost all subgroups is at

unprecedented levels, and continues to increase in the

United States (U.S. Department, 2007). An inactive

lifestyle during childhood and adolescence can lead to

unhealthy habits and sedentary related diseases in

adulthood such as diabetes and heart disease. In fact, many

sedentary related diseases are occurring at earlier ages

among children and adolescents. The number of adolescents

categorized as at risk for obesity and overweight are at

unprecedented levels. Unhealthy children miss more school

than healthy children, and standardized test scores and

course grades are correlated to attendance. As young people

become more sedentary, their level of physical fitness also

declines. The impact of a non-active lifestyle not only

affects the physical domain of young people, but also the

cognitive realm as well.

As cited by Wright, O'Flynn, and Macdonald (2006)

that the young women and men in the study engaged the

health/ fitness discourse very differently: for the young

men, health conflated with fitness as an embodied capacity

to do physical work; and for the young women, health was a

much more difficult and complex project associated with

3
managing and monitoring practices associated with eating

and exercise to maintain an 'appropriate' body shape.

Advocates for physical education and personal

health classes are reluctant to make the assertion that

physical fitness and physical activity lead to improved

academic performance. Many physical education proponents

believe that improved fitness levels and increased time for

physical activity have health benefits separate from, and

that outweigh, the relationship to academics (Vail, 2008).

However, today’s physical education teacher and school

administrators must account not only for the increased

emphasis on academic testing and accountability, but also

lean on past research to determine how physical education

classes can aid academic performance.

The results of this study will add to the

existing professional literature, and shed more light on

the importance of students’ existing fitness levels.

Statement of the problem

 What are the effects of being physically fit to the

senior high school JOHN B AREVALO?

 What are the advantages of being physically fit?

4
 What are the reasons why most of the students nowadays

prefer to have a physically fit body?

 How does the way of living of those physically fit

students differ to those who are not physically fit?

 In what ways can physically fit person encourage other

people to be physically fit like them?

General Objectives

The general objective of the study is to know the

effects of being physically fit to the students of JOHN B

LACSON AREVALO

Specific objectives

 To evaluate the advantages of being physically

fit to senior high school students of JOHN B

LACSON AREVALO

 To identify the reasons behind why most of

students nowadays prefer to have a physically fit

body

 To know how does the way of living of those

physically fit students differ to those who are

not physically fit

5
 To distinguish the ways can a physically fit

students encourage other students and/or people

to be physically fit like them

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focused on the Effects of Being Physically

Fit of the selected students of JOHN B LACSON AREVALO The

respondents of the study were composed of randomly selected

students of the college. The result of this study is

applicable only to the respondents of this study and should

not be used as a measure of the effect of the students who

do not belong to the population of this study.

Significance of the Study

Students. The outcome of this research would be beneficial

to students for they will be able to know the effects of

being physically fit.

Parents/Teachers. This study can be a great benefit to

parents/teachers for they may be provided with insights and

deeper understanding of their student’s disposition which

could help them facilitates appropriate guidance and

eventually help students improve their lives.

Future Researchers. The findings of the study will serve as

a reference material and a guide for future researchers who

6
wish to conduct the same experimental study or any study

related to the effects of being physically fit.

Definition of Terms

According to Wikipedia (2018), the term physically fit

means that it “is a state of health and well-being and,

more specifically, the ability to perform aspects of sports,

occupations and daily activities.”

In this study, the term physically fit was used to

“describe teenagers.”

Self-Concept is “the individual's belief about himself

or herself, including the person's attributes and who and

what the self is.” Baumeister (1999). In this study, the

term is used “to measure the improvement of the student’s

academic performance, confidence, etc.

JOHN B LACSON AREVALO is a higher education in Iloilo

City, Philippines which commonly a maritime school. In this

study, the school is where the study was conducted.
