Everything you need to know about computers

The Cell Experience

Sulin Tamu had never seen a prison cell before. As she stook inside it she never imagined it
would feel so confining. She knew that she like ninety-six percent of the Nisshon population
were Murukyun and needed to be confined in such a seel if necessary.
It was only after she had encountered her first Human when she was about thirteen years old, did
she realize fully that her homeland was populated with a variety of species. The biggest
difference between Humans and Murukyuns was they Humans could not “dust”. Since it was a
talent thst she had discovered even before she was a teenager, she cold not imagine life without
being able to use her will to disassemble her molecules into tiny grayish looking particles, travel
with the speed of the wind, and reassemble herself. Humans could be surreptitious, but they cold
only camaflauge themselves in shadow if they wore dark clothing and, if necessary, covered their
skin. Sulin’s skin was just as pale as some of theirs, but she hand no trouble making herself
invisible within shadow.

COMPUTERS CAN BE CLASSIFIED INTO personal computers or microcomputers, mini

computers, mainframe computers and super computers. It is becoming more and more difficult
to classify computers because the rate at which technology is changing is so rapid.

Super Computers

Also called monsters, super computers are the largest and fastest and most powerful of the lot.
They are mainly used in scientific simulations and scientific research and development to
perform complex scientific calculations.

Mainframe Computers

These are very large powerful and expensive computers. They are capable of storing huge
amounts of information. Mainframes are found in large organizations such as banks, insurance
companies and corporations.

Mini Computers

Minis are outdated, rarely used computers. Its storage and processing capabilities is between that
of the microcomputers and the PC. They were mainly used in small manufacturing and research
labs.

Micro Computers (PC’s)

These computers include desktop computers found in homes and small businesses.

Ancient Art
Our knowledge of art, as well as of all other aspects of life, of prehistoric times is based on the
discoveries of archaeologists. In Europe, most archaeological discoveries have been made along
the Danube River in the east and in the caves of southern France and Spain. The sculpture of the
Paleolithic period is characterised by engraved bones and ivory, with the subject (usually animals
like bison or reindeer) lightly incised with fluid, curving lines.

Other sculpture of this era includes small female statuettes, carved in ivory or stone. These are
believed to have a religious significance relating to a cult of nature worship. They seem to
indicate a great concern with fermtility, all of the anatomical features are constructed from ovoid,
bulbous forms rhythmically related to one another. The result is a unified work much admired by
artists of today.

Buying Printers

There are so many options available today when purchasing a printer. Most impact printers are
becoming obsolete, so they may be difficult to find in computer stores. Off the non-impact
printers, ink jet and laser printers are the most popular.

Although laser printers are expensive, their ever-reducing cost is making them very popular in
institutions, large companies and small businesses.

Laser printers produce a very high quality output at high speeds. Ink jet printers spray electrically
charged droplets of ink onto the paper. However, although the quality of print is high, for ink jet
printers the ink tends to smudge

Buying Hardware

Hardware is the term given to describe the physical equiptmentS that makes up a computer
system.

It typical system congigfuration consist of a CPU, a monitor or VDU, a keyboard, disk drive and
CD ROM drive, speakers, modem and a printer.

An office system must be able to withstand the long hours of work. The arrangement must also
be given great consideration since it must withstand long hours of prolonged use.

The computer configuration for the home however, is dependent on the cost.

Multimedia
Is the presentation of information using text, graphics, animation, audio and video. It uses at least
three of these
media types. Data is organised by combining data in different formats. Audio software is used to
organise audio and animation software for video.

Word processing
Is the most widely used application software. It allows characters to be entered and documents to
be created. Word processing is used to write letters, reports, assignments, articles and books.
Data is organised when creating and saving a document.

Desktop publishing
Is the use of specialized software to combine text and graphics to create a document? It is used to
create many different types of publications such as magazines, newspapers and books. Data is
organised by combining data in diferent formats. Publications are built by arranging different
design elements such as headings, columns of text and graphics.

A spreadsheet
Uses a rectangular grid made up of rows and columns to organise and store data that requires
some type of calculation. A cell is the intersection of a row and column. The organisation of data
involves entering data into a cell as a label, value or formula. Spreadsheets perform calculations
on values (numbers) and not labels (text).

A database

Is an organised collection of data. Data is organised into data structures called files, records,
fields and characters. The data structure is difined in a data dictionary. This includes information
about the caracteristics of each item entered in the database, such as the field name, fieldsize, and
data type and field description. A table or list arranges data into columns(fields) and rows
(records).
