GSM-BASED WIRELESS HOME APPLIANCES MONITORING &

CONTROL SYSTEM

AIM:

The main aim of this project is to develop a system, which uses Mobile technology that keeps
monitoring of the various appliances, and will control the operation of these appliances with
respect to the signal sent by the mobile.

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this project is to provide an automation system to continuously monitor and
control different appliances automatically and to gain the remote access of different units using
the GSM technology.

DESCRIPTION:

The goal of the project is to develop a system, which uses Mobile technology that keeps
monitoring and control of the various appliances of the home, which executes with respect to the
signal sent by the mobile. For utilization of appliances the new concept has been thought to
manage them remotely by using GSM SMS, which enables the user to remotely control
switching of domestic appliances. Just by dialing keypad of remote telephone, from where you
are SMS, you can perform ON / OFF operation of the appliances. Here in this process you are
underneath of authentication process and if you are the valid person you are allowed to on/off the
devices using sms.

The ranges of appliances that can be controlled through GSM SMS are many in numbers. Some
of them are as follows and this depends upon the usage priority of the appliances i.e. parking
Lights, Music System or other electrical / electronic appliances. SMS based Device control
system can be used at various places like industries, hospitals, house, colleges, agricultural farms
etc. User can control 5 relays and a buzzer by sending commands through SMS to this project.
This project can control AC devices as well DC devices. We have provided 2 DC devices and a
buzzer with this project for demo purpose.

MODULES

MICRO CONTROLLER

A microcontroller (or MCU for microcontroller unit) is a small computer on

a single integrated circuit. In modern terminology, it is similar to, but less
sophisticated than, a system on a chip or SoC; an SoC may include a
microcontroller as one of its components. A microcontroller contains one or
more CPUs (processor cores) along with memory and
programmable input/output peripherals. Program memory in the form
of ferroelectric RAM, NOR flash or OTP ROM is also often included on chip, as
well as a small amount of RAM. Microcontrollers are designed
for embedded applications, in contrast to the microprocessors used in personal
computers or other general purpose applications consisting of various discrete
chips.

SERIAL COMMUNICATION

In telecommunication and data transmission, serial communication is the process

of sending data one bit at a time, sequentially, over a communication
channel or computer bus. This is in contrast to parallel communication, where
several bits are sent as a whole, on a link with several parallel channels.

YEAR : 2015
DESCRIPTION :

This paper represents an effective technique for the user to monitor and
control the house/office appliances and other equipments via the mobile phone.
The home automation improves the lifestyle of control of the home device. Our
work is based on embedded system. In this project, we propose a unique System
for Home automation utilizing Dual Tone Multi Frequency (DTMF) that is paired
with a wireless module to provide seamless wireless control over many devices in
a house. We can operate our robot from any distant or remote area. It is a wireless
robot but instead of using a separate wireless module (transmitter and receiver) we
are using the cell phones for this purpose. The principle used for mobile controlled
robot is the decoding of DTMF tone

TOPIC : Home Automation System (HAS) using Android for Mobile Phone

AUTHOR’S : Sharon Panth , Mahesh Jivani

YEAR : 2011

DESCRIPTION : Automation of the surrounding environment of a modern human

being allows increasing his work efficiency and comfort. There has been a
significant development in the area of an individual’s routine tasks and those can
be automated. In the present times, we can find most of the people clinging to their
mobile phones and smart devices throughout the day. Hence with the help of his
companion – a mobile phone, some daily household tasks can be accomplished by
personifying the use of the mobile phone. Analyzing the current smart phone
market, novice mobile users are opting for Android based phones. It has become a
second name for a mobile phone in layman terms. Home Automation System
(HAS) has been designed for mobile phones having Android platform to automate
an 8 bit Bluetooth interfaced microcontroller which controls a number of home
appliances like lights, fans, bulbs and many more using on/off relay. This paper
presents the automated approach of controlling the devices in a household that
could ease the tasks of using the traditional method of the switch. The most famous
and efficient technology for short range wireless communication- Bluetooth is used
here to automate the system. The HAS system for Android users is a step towards
the ease of the tasks by controlling one to twenty four different appliances in any
home environment.

TOPIC : ANDROID MOBILE BASED HOME AUTOMATION USING

BLUETOOTH

AUTHOR’S: D.Jaya Sree, M.Jhansi Lakshmi

YEAR : 2014
DESCRIPTION : This Project presents the overall design of Home Automation
System (HAS) with low cost and wireless remote control. This system is designed
to assist and provide support in order to fulfill the needs of elderly and disabled in
home. Also, the smart home concept in the system improves the standard living at
home. The main control system implements wireless Bluetooth technology to
provide remote access from PC/laptop or smart phone. The design remains the
existing electrical switches and provides more safety control on the switches with
low voltage activating method. The switches status is synchronized in all the
control system whereby every user interface indicates the real time existing
switches status. The system intended to control electrical appliances and devices in
house with relatively low cost design, user friendly interface and ease of
installation. Due to the advancement of wireless technology, there are several
different of connections are introduced such as GSM, WIFI, ZIGBEE, and
Bluetooth. Each of the connection has their own unique specifications and
applications. Among the four popular wireless connections that often implemented
in HAS project, Bluetooth is being chosen with its suitable capability. Bluetooth
with globally available frequencies of 2400Hz is able to provide connectivity up to
100 meters at speed of up to 3Mbps depending on the Bluetooth device class.

YEAR : 2016
DESCRIPTION :

In today’s world automation has played a key role in developing human’s life and
enhancing safety and security protocol. Mobile phones nowadays are very common
to all people. Everyday household work like switching ON /OFF the fan or lights,
decrease or increase in air conditioner temperature can be easily done using
smartphone. Today home automation system (HAS) has been a key area of
research in recent times. Home automation using android platform eliminates the
process of individual involvement and enhancing easier and faster daily household
needs for everyone. The home automation system (HAS) designed on android
platform has been interfaced with 8 bit microcontroller i.e. arduino to control the
home appliances using relay. Bluetooth has been used as the most reliable and
efficient technology for short range communication. Different sensor has been used
which are illustrated in details below. This paper provided a novel approach
enhancing automation in household works and eliminating the traditional method
of switching

TOPIC : GSM-Based Home Appliances Control System for Domestic Power

Users in Ghana

AUTHOR’S : E. Effah, F. L. Aryeh and W. K. Kehinde

YEAR : 2016
DESCRIPTION :

With the rising increase in population and its attendant increase in the consumption
of energy, there is a great need to conserve energy in every way possible. The
inability to access and control the appliances from remote locations is one of the
major reasons for energy wastage in Ghana. This project presents the development
and implementation of a Global System for Mobile Communication (GSM) based
remote control system for electrical appliances and lighting that enables complete
control of the interface on which it is based. GSM Shield was used for receiving
Short Message Service (SMS) from the homeowner’s mobile phone that
automatically enables an Arduino microcontroller to take the necessary actions like
switching OFF and ON electrical appliances such as fan, light, air-conditioner,
supply mains and so on. Basically, it reads the SMS and acts according to the
message. Similar products commercially available are Internet dependent and so
lack the true sense of real mobility and security. However, the present GSM-based
remote control system allows the homeowner to control household appliances from
anywhere using the mobile phone and also prevents unauthorised access to these
appliances. Crucial to the present system is the provision of security on detection
of intrusion via SMS using GSM technology. This GSM-based home appliances
control system is recommended for implementation in every home to tackle the
rampant energy wastage in Ghana
