PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber: Write the same question on the board but one in the est-ce que form and the other in the
inversion form and ask the students to tell which is which.
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: Ask the students what words we use in English to ask questions. Write all five of
them on the board.
Advance Organizer/Agenda: Tell the students that today we will be focusing on “Why” and be doing some activities
related to that
Transition to Body: Move into the body by having them translate the word “Why” into French
Body (__min.):

Learning Activity #1: Determining where Pourquoi goes in a phrase (15 minutes)
Give the students a worksheet upon which they are required to read examples of questions using and not using
pourquoi in order to determine the proper placement of pourquoi in a question phrase. At the bottom of the worksheet
there would be an opportunity to transform 3 questions into questions using pourquoi.
After the students have done the worksheet, we will have a class discussion about where pourquoi should be placed in
a question phrase.
Have the students take another few minutes to look at the worksheet and compare the questions without pourquoi to
the ones with pourquoi in order to determine why we use the word pourquoi.
Discussion will follow
Learning Activity #2: Video (10 minutes)
Show the video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It-LEWhYW2I This video describes how parce que is a sentence
starter when answering a pourquoi question.
Talk to the students after the video about the use of parce que and show them the proper written form of answering a pourquoi
Ex. Pourquoi est-il ici? Il est ici parce qu’il veut apprendre. Versus orally, Pouquoi est-il ici? Parce qu’il veut apprendre.
Learning Activity #3: Desert Island with Pourquoi and Parce que (20 min.)
Explain to the students that they are being taken to a island in the middle of the ocean and they are allowed to bring
five items. Give them time to come up with their items.
Once they have their items, explain that they will be going around the class, asking their fellow classmates what they
are bringing and then why. The students must then start their reasoning with parce que to explain why they would
bring a certain item. They must talk to at least 5 other students and write down one item they would bring and why.

Closure ( 10 min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Review with the students when and how pourquoi is used, and how to use
parce que as a sentence starter
Give the students time to write in their journal 4 practice questions using pourquoi. 2 with inversion and 2 with est-ce
que. They can then comment on when parce que is used as a sentence structure (only orally)
