Definition
Quadratic Equation:

A quadratic equation is any equation having the form

where x represents an unknown, and a, b, and c represent
known numbers such that a is not equal to 0. If a = 0, then
the equation is linear, not quadratic.

Example : 5x2+3x+3=0
Problem
● An object is launched at 4 meters per second (m/s) from a
12-meter tall platform. The equation for the object's height
s at time t seconds after launch is s(t) = -5t2 + 20t + 60,
where s is in meters. When does the object strike the
ground?

0 = -5t2 + 20t + 60 0 = t2-4t-12

Ways to solve a Quadratic Equation
There are 4 ways to solve quadratic equation:

1. F.O.I.L method
2. Quadratic formula
3. Completing the square
4. Graph
F.O.I.L method
3
2
F - first terms 0 = t -4t-12 2

0 = (t - 6) (t + 2)
O - outside terms
0 = (t - 6) (t + 2) 1
4
I - inside terms
t = 6 t = -2 0=-t2+2t-6t-12
L - last terms

0 = –t2-4t-12
Quadratic formula
Formula:

t2-4t-12= 0 Case: 1 Case:2

= -(-4)+-√ 42-4(1)(-12) / 2
4+8 / 2 4-8 / 2
=4+-√ 16+48 / 2
=12 / 2 =-4 / 2
=4+-√ 64
=6 = -2
Completing the square
0 = t2-4t-12 t2−4t+4=12+4
Case 1 Case 2
formula :(b / 2)2 (t−2)2=12+4
t= 2+4 t= 2-4
(-4 / 2)2 = 4 (t−2)2=16
−√t−2=±16 t=6 t=-2
t= 2±4
t= 2+4
t= 2−4
