CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

People nowadays use internet for many purposes. We use it to gain access,
information, store and receive data. The most used is the social media which are websites
and applications that enable users to create and share content or to participate in social
networking. According to Weforum.org, Facebook is widely used in the world, they’ve
shown proof by using the research graph by Statista.com that shows Facebook being
mostly used social media site in the world. Facebook is an online social media and social
networking service which was launched on February 24, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg,
along with fellow Harvard students and roommates (as stated by Wikipedia). Most
students would use Facebook to connect with their friends or teachers but how does
Facebook become informative? Is Facebook really just for our own entertainment or
could it be helpful to students? As this study is concluded to learn what are the impacts of
using Facebook on academic purposes towards Grade 11 students studying in STI
College Caloocan.

1.2 STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Facebook is the widely used social networking site. Worldwide, there are
over 2.07 billion monthly active Facebook users (Source: Facebook 11/01/17). This
means that a wide variety of people are using Facebook including students, which means
that it also affects them and has impacts on them. Using Facebook as a source of
entertainment and also information, how would students be able to handle the
informations they get from the Facebook site and how informative is Facebook to us
Grade 11 students in STI College Caloocan?

1.3 HYPOTHESIS

Most of the time, people would spend their time using the internet because it
gets them entertained. To students, having this type of application which they could
connect to others and learn new things, I assume that it could be informative and helpful
in our studies.
1.4 THEORETICAL AND CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

The study is about the impacts of Facebook towards grade 11 students who are
studying in STI College Caloocan. Possibly, the basis of the study would be the
development they got when they took the information, and what would be it’s advantage
and disadvantages to them.

1.5 SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

The study is about knowing whether Facebook is informative towards students.


It would be beneficial towards the society, if the research would be successful, that social
media “could” be beneficial to students and inform others in able for people to learn new
ideas.

1.6 SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS

Grade 11 students who are studying in STI College Caloocan that has knowledge
about using Facebook, anyone who has no knowledge of what is Facebook or doesn’t
know how to use it would be exempted from the research.

1.7 DEFINITION OF TERMS

 Beneficial- favorable or advantageous; resulting in good.


 Exempted- free (a person or organization) from an obligation or liability imposed on others.
