Cylinder liner maintenance

Engine type This bulletin concerns WÄRTSILÄ® Vasa 14, 22ABC, 22MD, 22HF, 22/26,
24TS, 32, 32LN, WÄRTSILÄ® 20, 20DF, 32, 32LNGD, 32GD, 32DF, 34SG,
W34SG and 34DF engines.
General Whenever new piston rings are mounted, the cylinder liner must be honed.
Normally a light honing is sufficient. If the honing is done when the cylinder
liner is in its place in the engine block, the crankshaft under the cylinder liner
being honed must be protected by a plastic sheet. Honing debris must be
prevented from entering the crankshaft or bearings and falling into the
oil sump of the engine.
Instructions For the honing process, the following instructions are prescribed:
The honing is carried out by means of “Plateau honing”.
Only ceramic honing stones with a coarseness of 80 and 400 grit
should be used.
Note! The use of any other type of honing stones is not allowed.
The 80 grit honing stones should be used for about 20 strokes or until
the polished areas in the cylinder liner are removed. After that, the 400
grit honing stones should be used for about 30 strokes to give the
correct surface finish.
The pitch angle of the honing lines in the cross hatch pattern should be
about 30 , see Figure 1, which is achieved by combining for example
40 strokes/min with a rotational speed of 100 RPM.

Use honing oil as coolant. A light fuel oil of 2-15 cSt could also be used.
After honing is completed, the liner bore must be carefully cleaned by
using a suitable brush, water (preferably hot) and soap or cleaning fluid.
Alternatively, light fuel oil can be used. Then dry with a cloth and
lubricate with engine oil for corrosion protection.

Definition Symbol Value

Reduced peak height Rpk [ m] 0,7 max
Core roughness depth Rk [ m] 1,0-2,5
Reduced valley depth Rvk [ m] 2,0-4,2
Peak material ratio Mr 1 [%] 10 max
Valley material ratio Mr 2 [%] 70-90

If the roughness measuring gauge cannot measure above mentioned units,

the surface parameters in Table 2 may be used.

Rz = 4-9 m
Ra = 0,7-1,2 m
Tp = 60-85% at 2 m level. Tp reference line at 2% or Ry.

Ordering The honing equipment is delivered with the engine. For older sets of honing
equipment, make sure that the ceramic honing stones are of coarseness 80
respectively 400 grit.
Contact your closest Wärtsilä Services Network. When ordering, please
specify the engine serial number and part number.
