The Community Service Club of Nevada State College

Charter

Revised March 2018

I. Purpose and Goals


The goals of the CSO are:
A. To build bridges among diverse groups of people
B. To encourage learning and understanding through community service work
C. As a student-governed program, to train students in leadership, training, non-profit
administration, and development
D. To encourage and support students to be active contributing members of the local
community

II. Programs and Activities


The CSO achieves its goals through the following programs:
A. Short-term and long-term community placements and internships
B. Leadership development and training
C. Annual blood drives, community service fairs, and other related events
D. Educational forums

III. Membership, Officers, Election Procedures and Advisory Board


CSO membership is open to all students. Types of involvement include:

A. Executive/Advisory Board – One-year administrative positions that develop and promote all
CSO programs, selected through application process by outgoing board
Responsibilities include:
1. Attending weekly meetings
2. Keeping one regular office hour
3. Completing job responsibilities listed for individual job descriptions

There are seven board positions, including:
a. Chairwoman
b. Head of House Representatives
c. Community Education Chair
d. Short-Term Projects chairs (two or three)
e. Outreach Intern
f. Blood Drive Chair

B. House Representatives
1. Are elected by individual houses (one per house)
2. Attend bi-weekly meetings
3. Encourage community service within Smith houses
4. Act as liaisons between the CSO and the student body

C. Long-term Volunteers--volunteer at local agencies 1 to 8 hours a week


Placements are coordinated by the CSO Director and Program Coordinator.

D. Short-term Volunteers--volunteer for one-time projects that last a few hours


Projects are coordinated campus-wide by the Short-Term chairs and within Smith houses by
House Reps.

IV. Sources of Funding


The CSO receives funding from an endowed fund, an interest account, and the College. The
CSO does not receive funding from the SGA. Requesting funding from the SGA is subject to the
rules of the Senate Finance Committee.

V. Overall Policies

A. THE NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY FOR ORGS WITH NSC MEMBERS ONLY


Membership in this organization shall be open to all students in good standing currently enrolled
at Nevada State College regardless of race, color, creed, religion, national/ethnic origin, sex,

sexual orientation, age, or with regard to the bases outlined in the Veterans Readjustment Act
and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

B .THE NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY FOR ORGS WITH 5 COLLEGE MEMBERS


Membership in this organization shall be open to all students in good standing currently enrolled
at Nevada State College (or a Five College institution) regardless of race, color, creed, religion,
national/ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, or with regard to the bases outlined in the
Veterans Readjustment Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act.

C. ANTI-HAZING STATUTE
In accordance with the Nevada State College Student Handbook and Nevada state law, there
shall be no hazing, harassment or mandatory participation in activities in which a member does
not wish to participate. Hazing and the punishments are defined by the Nevada State College
Student Handbook, which states…..
“Though it is not uncommon for the student community to engage in humorous pranks, all
individuals and groups are expected to ensure that such activities never exceed the bounds of
good humor and respect for others. Such activities must never infringe on a student’s rights,
inflict physical or psychological pain, causes personal humiliation or damage to college or
personal property, see the Hazing Statute for additional information. Any action that gives rise to
such consequences will be subject to disciplinary action and possible prosecution under Nevada
State Law.”
