1 Direct Reading Titrator, 0-50 Range 0380
*WARNING: Reagents marked with an * are considered to be potential health
hazards. To view or print a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for these
reagents go to www.lamotte.com. To obtain a printed copy, contact LaMotte by
e-mail, phone or fax.
To order individual reagents or test kit components, use the specified code
number.
Carefully read the LaMotte Direct Reading Titrator Manual before
performing the titration. The Titrator is calibrated in parts per million
(ppm chloride). Each minor division on the titrator scale equals 1 ppm.
NOTES:
• If sample is colored, add 0.3 mL Aluminum Hydroxide Suspension
(order LaMotte Code 3826) per 10 mL of sample. Mix, let settle and
filter.
• If sulfide, sulfite or thiosulfate is present, add 0.1 mL Hydrogen
Peroxide 30%, per 10 mL of sample.
EPA ACCEPTED PROCEDURE
To qualify as an EPA accepted test, and to achieve greatest accuracy, the
*Chloride Reagent B should be checked periodically. Refer to Standard
Methods, 16th edition, 407A, 1985.
Standardize against 0.0141N NaCl by adding 3.0 mL of 0.0141N NaCl to
an Erlenmeyer flask. Add 3 to 4 drops of *Chloride Reagent A and titrate
with *Chloride Reagent B to a pinkish yellow endpoint. At the endpoint,
3.0 mL of *Chloride Reagent B should be consumed. Should a variance
greater than 0.3 mL occur, discard *Chloride Reagent B and reorder fresh
reagent(Code 4070).
PROCEDURE
1. Fill test tube (0778) to 10 mL line with sample water.
2. Adjust pH to read between 7 and 10 using a pH meter or Indicator
Sticks to determine pH.
3. Add three drops of *Chloride Reagent A (4069). Cap and swirl to
mix. A yellow color will develop.
4. Fill Direct Reading Titrator (0380) with *Chloride Reagent B
(4070). Insert Titrator into center hole of test tube cap.
5. While gently swirling tube, slowly press plunger until yellow color
changes to orangish brown. Read test result in ppm Chloride where
plunger tip meets titrator scale.
6. If plunger tip reaches the bottom line on titrator scale (50 ppm)
before color change occurs, refill Titrator and continue titration.
When recording test result, be sure to include original amount of
reagent dispensed (50 ppm).
7. Parts per million chloride test result may be converted to grains per
gallon (gpg) Chloride:
gpg Chloride = ppm Chloride x 0.058
HIGH CHLORIDE & SALINITY READINGS
Samples with high chloride and salinity readings must be carefully diluted.
Dilutions of 1 to 20 or 1 to 100 are recommended.
EXAMPLE: 1 mL of sample water is diluted to a total of 20 mL with
distilled water. This is a 1 to 20 dilution.
Fill the Titration tube to 10 mL with diluted sample, and perform titration
as described. Multiply Titrator reading by appropriate conversion factor
given below for parts per million (ppm), parts per thousand (ppt) or
percent (%) Chloride.
1 - 20 DILUTION
ppm Chloride = Titrator Reading x 20
ppt Chloride = Titrator Reading x 0.02
% Chloride = Titrator Reading x 0.002
1 - 100 DILUTION
ppm Chloride = Titrator Reading x 100
ppt Chloride = Titrator Reading x 0.1
% Chloride = Titrator Reading x 0.01

To convert parts per thousand (ppt) chloride to parts per thousand (ppt)
Salinity use the following formula:
ppt Salinity = (1.805 x ppt Chloride) + 0.03
