Report

5-8 Race Calendar

This month will bring about the end of Summer and a return to cooler weather. It is also rapidly
bringing back the darkness to our 5:30 a.m. runs. So, remember to wear your reflective vest/belt
if you run in the early mornings. You may also want to bring a headlamp or small flashlight. We
are gradually transitioning the early morning runs off of the trail and onto our winter running
routes. Don‟t worry if you don‟t know the route, someone will be there to show you the way.

This month also brings about the start of the Fall racing season. Check out the Upcoming Events
Page and Race Calendar to plan your Fall racing schedule. In December, we will start another
training program for the Go! St. Louis Full and Half Marathon. Watch for details coming soon.

Twelve of our red9runners tackled the Wood River Triathlon on August 14th. For several, it was
a first triathlon and I am happy to report that everyone did really well and had lots of fun in the
process. We will look into another triathlon in the Spring. If you have not done a triathlon, you
should consider trying the tri. Outdoor cycling will continue through October and swim instruc-
tion is always available through the YMCA.

Be sure to cheer on our Young Runners Club and participants in the First 5K Program as they
prepare for and run the Italian Fest 5K on Saturday, September 18th. We are also actively seek-
ing volunteers to help out on race day at the Italian Fest 5K as well as in staffing a water stop at
the Fred Winter‟s Memorial 5K / 10k on Saturday, October 9, 2010. Please see Cheri or Miriam
if you are available to help.

Happy Running! Welcome Fall!

Runner Profile
Featured Runner - Miriam Bell
When/Why did you start Running? When I was 13 yrs old, I started running with my
Border Collie to “run the naughty out of him”.
Miles last week: 48

Favorite Distance? Anything between 13.1 and 26.2 miles

Your first Race: Maverick Stampede 10K (2003) to get extra credit for a college class.
Also my first age group winner!

Your last Race: Wood River Triathlon

Favorite Race? Flying Pig Marathon…because of the GREAT swag!

Your mantra is: I‟ve been through worse… or SUCK IT UP! Depending on the running
situation.
Favorite food before a race or long run? A PowerBar or cold cereal
Favorite Gadget? My Garmin…my best friend and worst enemy.
Something “strange” you always need on a run? A sweat rag…can‟t STAND sweat burn-
ing my eyes.
Amount of races you've done in your life? 15 that I can remember…

Amount of races you've done this year? 4 so far

When I can't run, I... am cranky until I force myself to find some alternate for m of exercise.
Music or no Music? If yes, favorite music: ABSOLUTELY! I have music ADHD so my favorite changes every week.
Favorite book? Pride and Prejudice or The Vampire Academy series
Favorite Movie? Dumb and Dumber or the Anne of Green Gables series.
Favorite Runner? Anybody who‟s not a “Runemie”
Favorite brand of apparel? Brooks is best!
Favorite brand of shoes? Asics

How many pairs of running shoes do you have? 2…I can‟t stand running shoe build-up.
Fuel on long run or race is: Gu and/or PowerBar gels, as well as alternating Gatorade and water.
Last/current injury: Torn Quadricep muscle last Spring.
PR you're most proud of: 15 K (9.3) in 1:11:23
Next Challenge ahead: Sub 4 hour marathon on October 3rd (Lewis and Clark)
A Goal further ahead you'd like to get to someday: ½ Ironman Triathlon (Ohio, Fall 2011), and 50 Miler (in the next 5
years)

Why do you run? Because it seems to make all of life‟s challenges seem a LOT less scary, and gives me the opportunity
to practice perseverance, motivation, discipline, and determination on a daily basis. I‟ve also acquired an amazing group
of friends through running with the YMCA Run Club. Lastly, but certainly not least, I run so I can eat!
