rheumatic diseases, conditions that affect the joints, muscles and bones.

Advanced Surgical Procedures consist of :

1. Minimal Invasive Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery, or keyhole surgery, reduces injury to the

body caused by conventional open surgery, because the cuts made are much
smaller. This efficient procedure is performed with advanced laparoscopic
instruments inserted through 3 – 4 tiny, buttonhole incisions. The surgeon will
be able to view enhanced and detailed images of the internal organs by inserting
a viewing scope through these cuts. After the procedure, the tiny cuts are
stitched up, leaving minimal visible scarring.

15 | P a g e
Minimally invasive surgery can be used for diagnostic purposes and
laparoscopic techniques are used in a wide range of surgeries and procedures.

Minimally invasive surgery can be conducted using robotic surgery

where the surgeon controls the robot from a console. The high-definition 3D
camera allows a better view of the surgical area and the flexibility of the robotic
hands gives the surgeon greater accuracy and control.

2. Robotic Surgery

Robotic surgery combines the skills of our surgeons with the accuracy
of the da Vinci® Surgical System to give patients a better clinical outcome. By
overcoming the challenges of traditional open surgery, the da Vinci® Surgical
System allows our surgeons greater accuracy, dexterity and control, needing
only 1 – 2cm cuts. Robotic surgery can be used for most conditions that are
currently treated using laparoscopic surgeries and is ideal for:

a. Treatment of gynecological conditions like cervical and uterine cancer,

uterine fibroids, endometriosis, hysterectomy, uterine prolapse,
menorrhagia (excessive bleeding)
b. Coronary artery bypass
c. Knee pain caused by osteoarthritis
d. Prostate cancer removal

16 | P a g e
e. Thyroid removal
f. Surgical oncology for the removal of cancer tissue from sensitive parts of
an organ or a tissue

While most people may be suited as candidates for the robotic da

Vinci® Surgery, it may not be right for everyone. Your specialist will
determine if you are suitable for robotic surgery.

3. Awake craniotomy

An awake craniotomy is performed to operate on a part of your brain

that is affected by a lesion or tumor that involves, or is close to, regions that
control important bodily functions or your sensory and linguistic capabilities.

It is important that you are conscious for the entire procedure so that
your surgeon can monitor vital functions during the operation. Although you
will be awake, you will not feel any discomfort because a local anesthetic will
be applied to fully numb the area.

Your surgeon will accurately map the critical regions of your brain to
minimize the risk of damaging these important areas. Our surgical team will
then remove a part of your skull to access the brain. During this stage of the

17 | P a g e
procedure, you may be guided through a series of instructions or asked to
respond to questions.

Communication with your surgeon is crucial for the team to assess the
effectiveness of the surgery as it is progressing, and to ensure that important
functions are not compromised.

4. Bladeless Femtosecond Laser-assisted Cataract Surgery

It uses laser to make the corneal cut which allows for greater control
over the shape and size of the cut. And it is capable of consistently producing
well-centered and optimally-sized openings of the capsule of the natural lens
to allow the removal of the cataract lens and replacement with an artificial
lens implant. With the assistance of the laser, less ultrasound energy is
required to break up the lens. It is also better able to more accurately position
the lens implant for potentially better visual outcome for the patient.

This cataract surgery technique using laser can be performed for most
patients who have pupils that dilate well. However, it may be indicated
especially for particularly complicated cases, like when the cataract is
advanced, when the cornea is weak or when the lens is unstable.

18 | P a g e
5. Carotid Ultrasound

Carotid ultrasound will allow your specialist to identify any narrowing

of your carotid arteries as a result of plaque build-up over the years. It is
important to detect this early as this narrowing of your arteries may cause
clogging, reducing the blood supply to your brain. The plaques can also burst
and form a blood clot, blocking one of the brain’s smaller arteries, and thus
causing a stroke.
6. Complicated Kidney Transplantation

If you have been diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure and have a
pre-existing condition that will cause you to reject a transplanted kidney or are
unable to find a live donor with a matching blood group, your surgeon may
suggest a complicated kidney transplant. While there is no age limit for this
transplant, you must be medically fit to undergo the operation.

19 | P a g e
7. Deep Brain Stimulating Surgery

Deep brain stimulation is a surgical procedure that involves the

implantation of 1 or more electrodes in your brain. These electrodes are used
to transmit electrical pulses to specific areas of your brain to block abnormal
brain signals that could be causing various neurological disorders.

The surgery requires considerable pre-operative planning, during

which our team of specialists will evaluate your MRI and CT brain scans to
define the target areas.

Upon identification of these areas, you will undergo 2 separate

surgical procedures:

a. Our team of expert surgeons will strategically implant the electrodes into the
identified areas of your brain through small burr holes made in your skull.
Local anesthesia will be applied to numb your scalp and protect you from
any discomfort. It is important for you to remain conscious during this
procedure to provide feedback, so that your surgeon knows that the correct
areas of your brain are being stimulated.
b. In the second procedure, your surgeon will place you under a general
anesthesia before carefully inserting a battery, called an impulse generator,

20 | P a g e
within your chest. This will enable you to regulate side effects and suppress
symptoms with the use of a wireless hand-held controller (in a manner
similar to a cardiac pacemaker). Battery implementation may be done
immediately after electrode implantation or at a later session at your request.

Deep brain stimulation surgery will most likely be recommended to

help you if you have been diagnosed with stage 3 Parkinson’s disease or if
your prescribed medication has not sufficiently improved your symptoms.

8. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)

Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is a minimally invasive

procedure used to visualize, diagnose and treat sinus problems. An ENT (ears,
nose and throat) specialist will gently insert a small instrument, called an
endoscope, into your nostril to examine the area to be operated on, then use
specialized tools to restore drainage and ventilation between your nose and
your sinuses.
Your sinuses are hollow cavities in your skull that can fill up with
mucus, and become inflamed and swollen. This swelling blocks the flow of
the mucus and results in sinusitis. If your sinusitis does not improve with
traditional medical therapies like antibiotics, nasal sprays or medication, your

21 | P a g e
ENT specialist may advise you to take a CT scan to evaluate your condition
and decide whether you should undergo FESS.
9. Irregular Heart Rhythm Treatment
Catheter ablation is a non-surgical procedure where a thin catheter
with electrodes is carefully inserted into the blood vessels and directed into
the abnormal site of the heart that is causing the irregular beats. The exact site
is then accurately localized and radiofrequency energy will be delivered to
target, or ablate (remove), the affected area.
This technique uses a 3D mapping system that allows our specialists to
combine electrical information from inside your heart with the heart's
anatomy.
10. Kidney Sparing Surgery for Early Kidney Cancers

Their specialists recommend kidney sparing surgery, or partial

nephrectomy, as the preferred surgery of choice. It aims to preserve your
healthy kidney tissues while only removing the tumor.

The most critical part of this surgery is the cutting away (excision) of
the tumor followed by the repair and reconstruction of the nephrons and
muscles that are affected by the removal process. Our experienced surgeons do
this quickly to prevent kidney damage from lack of oxygen and blood supply to
the kidney. While this is a challenge with conventional laparoscopic
nephrectomy and its straight laparoscopic instruments, the articulated Endo

22 | P a g e
Wrist instruments from the da Vinci® system enables your surgeon to complete
the complex procedure quickly and efficiently.

Your specialist will most likely recommend you for kidney sparing
surgery if you suffer from early kidney cancer.

11. Laparoscopic Nephrectomy

Laparoscopic nephrectomy is a safe and effective procedure that allows a

diseased or cancerous kidney to be removed without having to have open
surgery. In this operation, the surgeon will make 3 small cuts (each being 1 –
1.5cm in diameter) in the abdomen while you are under general anesthesia. The
surgery is carried out with high accuracy instruments inserted into the abdomen
through these cuts. Guided by images on the video screen, the surgeon will
remove the affected kidney from the body.
12. Living Donor Kidney Transplant (LDKT)
Living donor kidney transplant (LDKT) is a surgical procedure that
involves the transplant of a kidney from a living person (the donor) to
someone with end-stage kidney failure (the recipient). Our multi-disciplinary
team of specialists, including 15 skilled nephrologists and urologists as well
as specialized nursing staff, are experienced in transplanting the donor’s
kidney into the recipient’s lower pelvis, often without the removal of the
recipient’s own kidneys. The donor does not have to be genetically related to
the recipient.

23 | P a g e
13. Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)
The left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, is a device that takes over
the left heart ventricle’s pumping action. The thickest of all the heart’s
chambers, the left heart ventricle pumps oxygenated blood to tissues in the
body in order to maintain healthy blood circulation.
14. In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproductive technology
(ART) which helps couples become pregnant by fusing the egg and sperm
together in an external laboratory setting, followed by selecting the highest
quality embryos and transferring them back into the mother’s uterus.
15. Reconstructive Surgery

Reconstructive and therapeutic surgery can be applied to a variety of

different conditions. It may be part of your rehabilitation and scar
management after burn injuries or other physical traumas caused by injury.
Our surgeons can use it to fix congenital (present at birth) abnormalities or in
aesthetic procedures like hair transplant, face lift, tummy-tuck, breast
enlargement or reduction, and for the removal of moles or tattoos.
Your specialist may also recommend this surgery as part of your post-
cancer treatment like breast reconstruction after a mastectomy (removal of the
whole breast) or removal of skin cancers and subsequent skin reconstruction.

24 | P a g e
16. Robotic Partial Knee Replacement

Robotic partial knee replacement (MAKOplasty®) is a surgical

treatment designed to relieve pain in the knee caused by the wear and tear of
joint cartilage. The partial knee resurfacing procedure is done using a robotic
arm, which lets the surgeon treat only the damaged part of the knee. The
precise nature of the procedure means healthy bone and ligaments
surrounding the damaged area are spared from trauma.
This procedure is best suited for adults suffering knee pain from
osteoarthritis in 1 of the 3 knee compartments, but is ineligible for a total knee
replacement.
17. Robotic Radical Prostatectomy
Robotic radical prostatectomy is a robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery
performed using the da Vinci® surgical system to remove the entire prostate
gland. Using this robotic system, the surgeon is able to connect the bladder to
the urethra with precision and dexterity.

25 | P a g e
18. Robotic Thyroid Surgery
Robotic thyroid surgery, also known as robotic thyroidectomy, is a minimally
invasive procedure that involves removing a part or the entire thyroid gland
with the assistance of the da Vinci® Surgical System. Unlike conventional open
surgery which needs a larger cut in the neck to reach the thyroid gland, this
robotic procedure only involves making a small cut in the armpit instead.
